MCV UK interviewed Infinity Ward’s Mark Rubin recently and had a chance to shed some light on the development process at Infinity Ward before they start their next project. Some details that Mark revealed were the fact that they had the option to leave the Call of Duty franchise after MW3 was released. He also revealed that the decision to leave the MW series “story-arc” was made right after MW3 during a brainstorming session at the studio.

“We don’t get a chance when making a game to think about the next one until we are done actually making that first game,” he said. “When we finished Modern Warfare 3, we had this big brainstorming session that lasted for weeks. Everybody gets to come up with ideas of what we want to do, not just what game we want to do, but moments in games.

“We all really knew we wanted to continue making Call of Duty. We could have done something else, but we wanted to make Call of Duty, and we wanted to create a new universe, or a new story at least. We wanted new characters and new experiences.

“The easy thing would have been – as we had finished the arc of Modern Warfare 1, 2 and 3 – to start a new arc within that same universe. That was the first step. But due to a lot of the changes we wanted to make with this new world, it really dictated out that we needed to make something that wasn’t Modern Warfare.”

Good to hear that IW have the option to leave COD if they wanted to. I know they’re itching to do a non-COD game for a long time and I hope will do it soon.

    • Roxas3510

You won’t be seeing that until CoD isn’t making the money it is now. Only then will they decide to stop making them.

      • Poplur33

THE GAME WILL ONLY BE AS GOOD AS THE CONNECTION, doesn’t matter what they add

    • MeisseN

Haha, and they will fail like Respawn Entertainment.

  • Batman

They should have left Call of Duty and go for something else

    • MeisseN

Then you’ll have Sledgehammer Games or even Raven Software for this year’s Call of Duty…

And you might get shit in return

      • Batman

Wow you were right. Sledgehammer would have put Dead man´s Nuke in the game.

Sledgehammer is to new for develop the biggest franchise in the world.

I think that their next COD might be MW4, since they don´t have experience enough to do a new franchise

        • MeisseN

And people will cry SAME louder.

  • Of course they aren’t going to leave the Call of Duty series. Way too much money involved. Plus its a guaranteed winner for them? And in today’s “formulas” by the bean counters – its always a trilogy and no more no less. Very rarely will you ever see something past 3 now days. Halo 4 and a few others being the exception to the rule.

I just hope with the Engine changes and the introduction of “Dedicated Servers” for Xbox that it will help stop the issues that currently plague the COD series.

    • Roxas3510

Has it been confirmed that there will be dedicated servers? Even so, it could turn out like how BF3 did on console with most of the servers being on the same map with the highest amount of tickets available and most of the EA run servers that had the normal rules and normal map rotation randomly disappearing. That’s only if they allow people to rent a sever, which you know they will.

      • Yea at this point I think its still only a rumor. I dunno if it will be for dedicated games or if it is just to run the Xbox infrastructure (which is more likely the case). Either way they need to fix how multiplier is currently handled on Consoles as the current system no longer works.

        • Roxas3510

All they need to do is introduce a skill based matchmaking system that actually works, get rid of lag compensation, and fix the spawns. It seems like they’re slowing understanding what weapon balance means, but in the end it doesn’t matter when my teammates are going 7-20 and the other team is spawning on both sides of the map at the same time. Not sure if I’m the only one who notices this but frequently on Studio (the firing range remake), while our team is in control of C and B in domination, the enemy team will spawn near the trailer by A flag AND back where the pirate display is, which is normally where the team controlling C is supposed to spawn. It’s really frustrating to get shot in the back from your own spawn while trying to defend the center flag (usually being the ONLY one defending the flag) not because the team flanked you, but because they spawned there. These are my main annoyances with Call of Duty.

Removing lag compensation is a terrible mistake especially on a p2p game. If a game doesn’t have lag compensation then it doesn’t have power to correct any delay of information between players and the host. In the end, players will be forced to lead their shots to kill targets, see frequent skipping of characters, or witness the game go back in time or fast forward a few seconds during a match.

            COD 4 without lag comp

          • Roxas3510

I knew I should have stated specifically what I meant by lag compensation. I’ve already seen Drift0r’s video on the matter. I’m not talking about the delay that allows people to shoot directly at the enemy instead of having to lead their shots. I’m talking about messing with people’s connection to try and “balance” the lag in the match. Lag compensation might not be the word for it, but I don’t know what to call it. I shouldn’t have to suffer just because the other people in my lobby have terrible connections.

  • No

After the CoD Ghosts series, and Treyarch’s Black Ops series (or is it finished?) is done… CoD should be released biennially. But we all know that shit ain’t happening.

    • MeisseN

Yeah it won’t, cash means more to Activision than the game itself.

Anyways I wonder what will EA/DICE and Battlefield series become, after MoH’s biennially scheduled release is put down.

    • Batman

Black ops 3 should be based on what Mason was doing for 30 years

  • if thats what its going to look like im leaving cod cause that looks like a painting from a book or something

    • PrimeEchoes

      It’s concept art, moron.

    • YouAreTooFuckingStupid

thats concept art you fucking idiot

    • Batman

      Its a concept art. LMFAO

  • They need to take a break from CoD for atleast 1-2 years so then they can make the game better!

    • MeisseN

IW & players: We want a better game! Give us a break!

Activision: Fuck you, shut up, make money.

  • DeathAngel

I honestly think the next game CoD does is a WWII game. I don’t want to hear about how CoD already did that. I don’t care, that was ages ago. At one point, we were all saying that CoD does way too many WWII games, but it’s been so long, with the new technology and with NextGen consoles imagine how much better it would look.
