Call of Duty: Ghosts Sets New High Watermark for Average Player Session Length

SANTA MONICA, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Activision Publishing, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Activision Blizzard, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATVI), announced today that the company sold more than $1 billion of Call of Duty®: Ghosts into retail stores worldwide as of day one.

“Call of Duty is by far the largest console franchise of this generation,” said Bobby Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard. “More people have played Call of Duty this year than ever before, logging four billion hours of gameplay. And in the last 12 months, Call of Duty®: Black Ops II, including its digital content, generated more revenues than any other console game ever has in a single year. Although it is too early to assess sell-through for Call of Duty: Ghosts, it’s launching at a time when the franchise has never been more popular.”

Millions of people are already playing Call of Duty: Ghosts online. Since its release yesterday, Call of Duty: Ghosts has moved to the #1 spot as the most played game on Xbox Live, according to Microsoft. Additionally, Activision confirmed that on the Xbox 360 videogames and entertainment system from Microsoft, average player sessions for Ghosts have been longer than either Black Ops II or Call of Duty®: Modern Warfare® 3, during the same time period.

Call of Duty: Ghosts launched at 15,000 midnight openings around the world. Fans around the world shared their excitement in social media, with Call of Duty-related terms trending an astounding 20 times globally on Twitter in the last 24 hours.
“Ghosts is an amazing game which ushers in the next generation of Call of Duty. The team at Infinity Ward has delivered yet another epic thrill ride in the campaign, and what I think is our best multiplayer game yet,” said Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing.

“This is the must have launch title for the next generation of consoles, and we expect Call of Duty: Ghosts to be the most successful launch title for the Xbox One and PS4 by a wide margin. In fact, according to GameStop, Call of Duty: Ghosts is their most pre-reserved next gen title.”

Really? I didn’t see any lines anywhere like previous COD’s. I think they are padding the numbers!!

Do you live round the world?

Some people find it easier to download these days

  • Passed GTA V?

      I guess so, asdfghjkl…

    • Anonymous….

No, they sold 1B to retailers in one day, not consumers

  • Misogynist

Looks like I’m eating my shirt

    • NuttyTheSquirrel

They sold copies of Ghosts worth $1billion to retailers. Not consumers. Retailers like Gamestop and so on. That doesn’t mean that they got $1billion from us. They’ve sold the copies to retailers. And now retailers will sell the copies to consumers, that doesn’t mean that they sold that many copies in one day. They’re just trying to trick people into believing they did….

  • Bigi345

WAIT WHAT? Despite being extremely popular, THAT’S NOT TRUE THAT’S IMPOSSIBLE!!!

• Bigi345

I made that comment before they said it’s retail

  • abhishek

its sad that even after earning so much they cannot produce good quality game especially pc port.it is bugged like hell and no FOV and uncap fps rip off customers with minimum 6 gb ram requirement which in reality ghost takes only 2gb..the main menu freezes coz a user who has more then 50 friends in steam..they can’t optimize the engine even if its 10 yr old ..feeling very depressed

    • KoolAidMan

Absolutely no PC support for this game. Treyarch atleast made an effort

    • the1PR0D1GY

It’s things like this which make me reconsider moving to pc. The so called “master-race” usually has minimal support for these big titles so I don’t understand why so many people like it more, (this is aside from modding and indie games)

      • jcw

        Only for COD……

      • NuttyTheSquirrel

Only CoD doesn’t support PC…. Because they’re just fucking lazy… It’s the “master-race” because it is much better than the consoles. The thing is that IW and Acti don’t really give a shit about the consumers and just want money. Ghosts on PC is the perfect example of that. “Big titles” Only CoD supports the PC like shit! Look at Battlefield. Probably the best multi-platform game that supports PC very, very well.

        • Alejandro Sepúlveda

          Go and play BF then…

          • NuttyTheSquirrel

            Already did that.

    • DanDustEmOff

Although I wish there was a fov slider and I have had it crash twice on campaign, I still think that it’s a good game. The graphics are excellent, the campaign is epic, multiplayer is good and it must be said IW have done a great job with hit detection and netcode.

  • Billy

Does anyone know if each solider has a different kd?

    • Misogynist

      They do not

    • KoolAidMan

Nope you’re KD carries over to every new soldier no stats get reset 🙂

      • Billy

        Can u reset your stats?

        • KoolAidMan

Now that I dont know and don’t want to know haha 🙂

  • Nitro Splicer

    Bullshit.

  • Misogynist

SO does anyone want to play on ps3 right now

  • brandon

    wtf?

  • Relentless

Bullshit. I only see like 4-500k people online on Xbox 360

    • Bigi345

It says sales not people online

    • KoolAidMan

I don’t think everyone plays Xbox only there is PC PS3 and Wii not to mention some people only play the game offline because they have no internet 😉

    • Mitch

Counter seems bugged. I’m on PS3, sometimes I have 200k, then the match after it’s 800k, one match later it’s 26million and the match after it’s like 200.

      • Michel

Strange my counter is always between 100K and 300K
I remember BO2 having 500K-1M in febuary but after GTA V it dropped to 200-400K and after GTA Online to 100-200K. now its like 30-100K
Interesting is that LP always stayed between 3-10K.

OT: I doubt that Ghosts passed GTA V, i even doubt that it passed BO2.
Ghosts has a lot of competition(GTA V & BF4 are the main ones)
BO2 did not really had competition, Medal of Honor was a worthless game and there was no game that sold like GTA V.
Besides there are people that only buy COD for Zombies, they won’t buy Ghosts.
And then there are people that are unsure about the console, PS4?,X360?,Xbox One?,PS3?,PC? or even WiiU.

  • Rockstar, consider yourselves dethroned.

    • NiftyGam3r

How much was gta? 800 mill?

      • Jake

        $1B in 3 (or 4) days

    • Well it hasnt been sold for pc so….

    • BadMitten

This is only to retail stores, i dont think rockstar released those vague figures

      • This is only current-gen also, if the combine the 2 gens and all platforms. They may beat GTA V

    • Andy

It’s sales in terms of selling to the retail store, not consumer sales. I think the 1 Billion in GTA V sales was consumer only. I might be wrong though.

    • josh

they did not beat rockstar in consumer sales

    • LippDogg

Funny at all the people that voted up this comment. $1Billion sold to retail stores is NOT $1Billion sold to consumers. That means that every store has to sell every copy of the game. Rockstar gets to keep its throne at least a little longer. And I’ll be playing Ghosts on PS4.

  • KoolAidMan

This seems like a good troll…..mmmm i wonder?

  • UnKnownLeegend

For some reason i think this is bullshit, If you look at the numbers of people Online, The numbers are lower than the numbers that were online for not only BO2 but also MW3.

    Edit.
Now they’ve changed the story to what it should be, It’s a little more believable xD

    • KoolAidMan

Could be the next gen pre-orders that fill the gap they did ship the PS4 and XBOX ONE copies on 5 Nov so far I know only Amazon did

      • UnKnownLeegend

True, Didn’t think of that, But the numbers are quite a lot lower than the previous COD games, Are that many people really buying the Next-Gen versions?

        • Mitch

Well, the leading store in Dutch game sales reported more pre-orders for Ghosts on next-gen than current gen, if that’s something

          • UnKnownLeegend

I highly doubt that, Next-Gen sales are going to be really really small compared to Current-Gen, Not to mention most people, including myself are just going to be paying the £9.99 for the upgrade.

          • Mitch

            Just what they reported.

          • BadMitten

That counts as 2 sales! If you buy ghosts on current gen, then spend £9.99 on upgrade, that’s 2 sales, those figures will be used as opposed to a much more specific one.

        • Erebdraug

This isn’t how many copies have been sold to people, it’s how much they’ve made seeling the game into retail stores like Gamestop, and all that. The $1 billion sales from players is still to come.

        • KoolAidMan

Could be some people want games on the day they get they’re next gen console so it’s a possibility or just maby someone is trolling us haha 🙂

    • NiftyGam3r

Were is a brand new storyline with new characters, a lot of people including me havent touched mp yet.

    • Most of us are getting Next-gen

    • wtflolsmh

When Blops 2 came out there were 900k+ people online on day 1 for Ghosts the most I saw was 500k+

      • KarmaMJO

First day of Black Ops 1 there were 2 million people playing on xbox alone. Something smells fishy.

    • NuttyTheSquirrel

They just gave copies to retailers worth 1 Billion Dollars. That doesn’t mean that they got 1 billion dollars in the first 24hr. It has nothing to do, and I highly doubt that they will sell copies worth a 1 billion dollars even in the first week.

  • AnusRhammer

Guys it’s only how much they sold to retailers not the public so they didn’t win.. not yet anyways

    • Bigi345

      That isn’t confirmed

      • AnusRhammer

Retailers hasn’t even released their sales yet!

      • NuttyTheSquirrel

THINK PLEASE! You don’t think that IF Activision had broke Rockstar’s record they wouldn’t rub it all over Rockstar’s face??? THEY WOULD. They would probably make a BIG-ASS BILLBOARD so that the entire world could see. That’s how big Activision’s ego is.

  • KoolAidMan
  • Drago

    so ghosts passed GTA V…

    • Anonymous….

No… they only sold 1B to retailers, not consumer… their trying to trick you in beliving COD beat GTA V

    • NuttyTheSquirrel

NO.

  • “Ghosts, it’s launching at a time when the franchise has never been more popular.” – Yea, that’s why last years version sold rather poorly. After what I have played I don’t think this one will do much better.

  • Work hard, Twerk harder

Wasn’t GTA5 $1billion? Have they been dethroned already?

    • NuttyTheSquirrel

NO. They’re just trying to trick people into believing they did.

      • Work hard, Twerk harder

I’d assume that the retailers would buy the games off them for a cheaper price than they’re sold in store, to make a profit obviously. Doesn’t that mean they’re a lot more likely to sell better than GTA5 there? especially when Xmas kids start getting the game

        • NuttyTheSquirrel

Mabye. But the kids will probably get the game either on Xmas or after Xmas, when they get some money on Xmas. But until there, the record is long gone. They have to earn 1 billion dollars by today. Since the record was 1 billion dollars in 3 days.

  • iSwedishVirus

I’m very confused…what exactly does “Ghosts has earned a record $1B (TO RETAIL)” mean? It is the same as overall copies of the game sold(worldwide) on day one?
Does it mean that Ghosts has beaten GTA V with it’s 3 day $1B record and BO2 with it’s 15 days $1B record?? I’m so confused 🙁
    btw

    • NuttyTheSquirrel

No. They sold copies of Ghosts worth 1 billion dollars to retailers. Not consumers. But retailers like Gamestop and so on.

  • Brad Portzer

dang it, i wanted for rockstar to keep that record they deserved it, call of duty doesnt. i call bs anyway, the statistic is from activison, and they bragged that they were going to beat gta 5, so they may be lying. if it is true i feel bad becuase i did pick up the game yesterday. i expected people not to buy ghosts because a lot of people said they were tired i playing a very similar game every year

    • Daniel Sims

They still have there record. This is how many games Activision sold to retailer not how many games/ how much revenue from consumers. Based on them still hiding that pretty much means that Rockstar gets to keep there record.

  • s.m.

Too scared to release actual copies sold to consumers aye?

  • Hah

  • noah

Don’t forget about the season pass, hardend and prestige additions !!!! That equel up to alot of money

  • Josiah Johnson

To be honest, this launch isn’t fair for cod if they are looking for the record, because so many people are waiting 10 days for next gen

    • LippDogg

You’re right, it’s not fair. CoD comes out on 6 different systems. GTA V came out on 2.

  • Kurama The Nine-Tailed Fox

I pre-ordered Ghosts from GAME.CO.UK on PS4 and it came on the 5th of November instead of the 29th when the PS4 is released. Really want to open it but I should wait till the 29th. =/

  • Batman

    Best CoD ever
