The NPD results for the month of January have been released, and Call of Duty: Ghosts remains at the top as the best selling title across platforms in retail.

In regards to next-gen consoles, Sony PlayStation 4 outsold the Xbox One both in the US and worldwide almost at a rate of 2:1.

“PS4 led overall hardware sales this month, followed by the Xbox One.” He also noted that 3DS and Wii U software sales increased, but software sales declined overall, as “there were about half the number of SKUs launched this January versus January 2013,” adding “DMC: Devil May Cry and Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch were particularly strong launches in January 2013, causing a poor comparison for launches in January 2014.”

On the PlayStation Blog, Sony’s John Koller confirmed that in the US, “PS4 was #1 in sales for next-gen consoles in January, nearly doubling the nearest next-gen competitor. And PS4 remains the cumulative leader here.”

  • It’d be interesting to see the digital numbers accounted for in these lists. I, for one, couldn’t let pass the deal Ghosts had on the Marketplace last month.

  • Sal

Weren’t people saying that this CoD was a failure and everything? Numbers are telling us otherwise lol

    • HenryDF

The quality of the series is certainly dying though 😉

      • Sal

        I don’t think so.

  • Ryumoau

congrats to both Sony and Activision.

  • Mitch

I wonder how Activision will react to the PS4 outselling the XB1 (as of now). We all know about the DLC deal, but I wonder how Activision looks to that deal now that Ghosts is selling better on PS4 than on XB1.

    • Siftblade of Rivia

Since Microsoft is a bigger company with more money, they can still afford to pay Activision to keep the deal. What Activision thinks doesn’t matter, it’s who’s willing to pay more to get their DLC first, which is Microsoft. Microsoft is willing to pay more because getting DLC early is a huge selling point for the Xbox One. Most people that play XBONE and PS4 play COD, therefore getting DLC early will influence more people to purchase the Xbox One over the PS4. That, and Microsoft is a much richer company overall than Sony is.

      • TheShadowReaper

richer yes, much richer i dont think so. Sony is its own goliath over there at Japan + at Europe and ‘Murica. Microsoft is good at only ‘Murica and a small portion of Europe. they sell literally nothing to Japan. and i’m not talking just for the XboxOne here.

        • Siftblade of Rivia

Yeah, Sony sells entertainment systems like TV’s, electronics, all the goodies in places Microsoft has no reach in. However, keep in mind, how many Americans own specifically a Windows computer or laptop? Windows phone or Tablet. Now think of all the Microsoft Word programs people who DON’T have a Windows computer have to buy to write essays, reports, whatever. Microsoft not only recieves income from PC’s, programs, and Xbox + Xbox Live, but also from Bing and Skype, which they own. Sony does own BluRay, but their main focus is on entertainment and electronic devices such as cameras and Tv’s. Also, I did some research, based on Forbes, Sony’s market cap is $17.6 Billion. Seems like a lot, right? Now look at Microsoft: $234.83 Billion. Here’s the link. http://www.forbes.com/powerful-brands/

its that COD is dying which is the reason to all these numbers. did you hear that guys? COD is dying! gonna be dead till this november… ahahah! god damn the haters, they are SO amusing.

    • Siftblade of Rivia

Every time there’s a new “Best Selling Game of _____” article, I get to read messages like this like 15 times. Yeah, yeah, we get it. Call of Duty ISN’T dying. Everyone here knows it. Nobody on this post said it was dying. Yet somehow people say the same “See? COD isn’t dying” every month.

      • TheShadowReaper

look, i dont comment on that topic just to prrove the haters wrong. its just that we have been so much spammed by haters about “COD is dying! your mama sucks!” comments that this is the way for me and my upvotes to let off some steam. so if u have seen comments like mine close to 15 times you’ll probably have seen the COD hating comments for more than 50 times already. understand the situation a little bit plz.

        • Siftblade of Rivia

I understand what you’re trying to do, but you posted this for no reason. Your comment would be a great reply to someone who did say “COD is dying,” but nobody on this post said that, so it’s a little out of place. It’s still in context, just out of place. I’m not disagreeing with what you said, just saying it’d make more sense if you were replying to a hater. 😛

    • CoDforever

Im not against the cod series, i just really hate ghosts and it did not deserve #1 IMO. I enjoyed every cod till ghost

      • TheShadowReaper

yeah, i didnt liked Ghosts either, its just that we have been spammed with “COD is dying” comments that i took the liberty of returning fire back to sender. 😛

        • Baldmanz_RAGE

COD will always sell. It doesn’t mean the games are being played as much as they once were. People like myself will always buy the next COD just because I love FPS games especially past COD’s. I for one am secretly hoping that every new game will fix the bullshit from the previous one. Sometimes it happens and sometimes it doesn’t. I will say Ghosts is the first COD I have no motivation to play. I’ll look forward to see what Sledgehammer can add to the genre.

          • TheShadowReaper

i completely agree. couldnt have said it better myself. still i cant stand bullshit from haters. thats why i retaliate.

    • Siftblade of Rivia

  • PC? According to steam’s top sellers it’s definitely not. People on consoles buying it, but on PC everyone abandoned it.

    • Yea, I about laughed when I saw PC on there but then it hit me that is just stating the platforms the game was released on.

  • Cody

I don’t understand how this is the best selling game, it’s the worst game in the CoD series

    • Sal

      Spot the Treyarch fanboy.

    • Penguin-Kun

Best Selling, not best gameplay or best story mode with huge experience.
No, just the best selling of the month.

  • Cod is dead they said… -.-

  • Eric Mandzuk

All u people do is talk s*** about the game it’s a fun game so stfu

  • Alex

Who is buying this rubbish ? I’ll tell you who ? Idiots like me on the PS4 who regrets wasting $99.00 AUD that’s who. Doesn’t mean I play the game, In fact i haven’t played COD Ghosts in weeks and the last time i tried they were 10k online and no chance of getting a hardcore game.

COD is a joke and these suckers buying micro packs DLC just keep feeding the activision troll
