GameInformer’s month long coverage of Advanced Warfare continues today with a new video interview with Audio director Don Veca. We preivously reported that Advanced Warfare has a new audio engine, built from the ground up over the last 3 years for Advanced Warfare.

Here’s GameInformer’s description of the video interview:

Audio director Don Veca created the lauded soundscape of the first Dead Space and is now bringing his talents to Sledgehammer Games’ first wholly developed game. Veca and his audio team have thrown out all sounds from previous Call of Duty games and are creating their grounded take on the future from scratch.

Holy shit does the sound quailty sound great! now that is a work of art! Great work Sledgehammer!

    • TheShadowReaper

we actually havent heard the game more than just a 2 minute trailer that had voice overs above original sounds. i’m kinda hesitant with this one. the Dead Space series had one of the best atmospheric soundtracks of any game i’ve played yet the sound quality was kinda meh…although he says they build up this from scratch i would just be a little more causious. IW said the same thing for Ghosts and we saw how that turned out in the sound department.

      • Mario Rivera

Ghosts does have great sound, not too many other great things in ghosts favor but good sound is a plus for ghosts

        • TheShadowReaper

well, when you compare to previous COD games yeah the sound is good but, its not the thing we were promised. the whole “you shoot something metal you know its metal” and such things in the audio engine they are simply not there. i hope its better this time.

        • Ikr you can hear someone across map…

          • Mario Rivera

Yes, we can even argue the sound in ghosts was TOO good

          • RileyWoofimposter

            Hello

    • Derrick Wingler

The bass on the gunshots sounds really nice

    • Rorke File

Maybe COD will win a price for something this year, since mw1 nothing has won any more …

  • GRANT

Great to see them making it all from scratch.

  • I like that guy, he’s cool. Real cool.

    • MrCrumpetFTW

Is that because he looks like your profile pic XD

      • Siftblade of Rivia

        Marshal > All

    • Brady the Defiled (sillibk)

      Yeah he is.

  • Jacky Liang

    Cool guy.

  • Pabby

Medal of honor warfighter had some good sounds…I hope COD aw will be great

    • jooker-jr

Too bad that there will not be any new Medal of Honor game

      • Pabby

        It is sad 🙁

      • Brady the Defiled (sillibk)

        Why?

        • jordanxbrookes

Because Call of Duty killed off Medal of Honor. Zampella and West originally worked on Medal of Honor before leaving the game and creating Call of Duty. Medal of Honor: Warfighter was supposedly going to attempt to kill Call of Duty, but failed to do so. Lets face it, not even the Father’s of Call of Duty, Zampella and West, could kill of Call of Duty, that’s how much of a superpower our franchise is.

  • jordanxbrookes

Please don’t do what Ghosts did and make everything including footsteps loud just so that you can show off the audio. Apart from that, love the sounding.

    • fires

also, dont do what blops2 did and make the music overshadow footsteps(which are nonexistant even with awareness), and the annoying music track that plays in the final minute of SND where you cant think with how loud it is. Needs some more atmospheric music

  • HasimoPro

Guys , why are they talking about the sound engine when they should talk about the graphics and the new graphic engine? This is so misleading what they r doing. I think honestly that they are gonna announce an upgrade engine than a whole new graphics engine… This shouldnt be prior above the graphic engine.. If i was going to promote my game i would bring the graphics prior to audio engine a first look for more excitement for the gamers. Just my thoughts..

    • Choppabro2psn

All of the info will be released soon enough. Maybe they’re saving the best for last.

      • HasimoPro

I hope your right about that 😉

        • Don’t worry, E3 is coming up, we should get engine news then! 🙂

          • Choppabro2psn

You sir are correct, and deserve a cookie.

      • jooker-jr

        A good PC port ??

        • xGolshixElitex

          Hope so.

    • jordanxbrookes

Simple answer: E3. They said Advanced Warfare at E3 will be incredible.

    • NuttyTheSquirrel

Because sound is as important as graphical fidelity…

      • HasimoPro

It’s definitly not. But that’s your opinion.

        • PandaMan

smh. Yeah, graphics are important, but audio is just as important. If the graphics are amazing, and the audio sucks, the game is worthless. The audio immerses you into the game, it makes you feel like you are in the battlefield. Take World at War for example. The graphics were kinda sketchy, but the audio for the time was amazing, and probably had some of the best audio of any CoD game. And it was (in my opinion) one of the best CoD games.

        • NuttyTheSquirrel

It is! Why do you think that Battlefield (for example) is so immersive?

HELL! Dead Space! If it didn’t had that amazing sound design, it wouldn’t be half as good.

The Last of Us, Dead Space, Bioshock, Battlefield, NFS (Shift 2, Modt Wanted 2012, Rivals), Project Cars,, Uncharted, Amnesia. These are just some of the games that have the most immersive sound design.

    • Derrick Wingler

“Misleading”? How so? The sound director can’t be proud of his award winning work and want people to be aware of his team’s role in the game? I hardly think its misleading to discuss something that is completely relevant.

      • HasimoPro

Of course he can be proud of what he did, props to him. Im referring to misleading cause they did this to us in the past (previous cod games).
So they probably gonna say the graphic engine is upgraded (again, but i hope not).

Yes the sound is definitly important but when a game is not graphically a joy to see/and to play it’s not comparible with the audio engine. (with a astro a50 headset everything sounds good to awesome for me)

They should get the maximum out of the ps4/xbone, and i really hope so. Otherwise i’m gonna skip this COD again, just like i did with Ghosts, and gonna focus on a other shooter like Destiny.

    • kyr95

Im 90 % certain that its a new engine. SHG has realised what a big task they’re onto. Even in this video the audio director clearly says “We had 3 years guys, its time to change things”. Connecting this to other interviews, i say that SHG will definitely surprise us with this game, whether it has “amazing” graphics or “good” graphics, although i cant understand why people say that the graphics from the trailer dont look amazing. To me they look gorgeous, but thats my opinion. To be honest, its very sad to me that people now only care about the graphics and not the core of the games like it used to be, although now with the next-gen era people demand more and i respect that but next-gen isnt only about graphics, its about new possibilities and innovation on games. And im pretty sure that that’s the direction SHG is taking. Even in this interview its stated that having so many sounds in a game wouldnt be possible without the next-gen power. As for the “which engine-graphical or audio- should be presented first” i’d say that there’s no first or second, to me audio is extremely important to a game as graphics are ( although gameplay is what matters mostly ). And if its indeed a new engine, which i think it is, it will either be revealed on the upcoming issues on gameinformer ( since it will be bringing us info until E3-next update May 23rd according to the website), or it will be presented on E3 because SHG is definitely planning something special this year (also if you remember they stated that the cutscenes will use the engine Activision showcased last year so its a possibility that the engine for the in-game action will also be revealed there). Personally, im waiting for gameplay first, but i gotta say i havent seen such dedication and vision from a developer for a game since Cod 4 , and thats saying something to me. Anyway, i hope you do enjoy this Cod this year, give SHG a chance, they’ve earned it 😉

      • HasimoPro

I always give COD a chance every year so basicly we have to wait till E3 for more upcoming news or gameinformer web. Time will tell… Thanks for your time and your usefull reply 😉

        • kyr95

And thank you for having time reading at my post, its great exchanging opinions about the game. I would like to show you something. I mentioned that to me SHG is one of the most dedicated devs ive seen in a game. Well i found an aritcle on vg247.com about what they should show at E3, an most of it was about showing off the potential new engine. So i posted this article on Michael Condrey’s. I was surprised to see that a while after he replied to me saying ” Surprise and thrill is our goal “. I am not sure if this hints at a potential show off of the new engine, but theyre definitely planning something special for us this year 🙂

@kyr95:disqus surprise and thrill is our goal!— Michael Condrey (@MichaelCondrey) May 21, 2014

          • HasimoPro

Thanks for the reference! And a nice reply from Condrey indeed.

I hope it is a new inovative change. Not like “look this is the new function we have in ghosts, it’s called the slide..”

But after reading the article yes, i think it will be a surprise and thrilling moment.

          • kyr95

I think youre right, unlike last year ive seen SHG telling us all about the new things theyre planning and not even once have they been exaggerating or pointing out almost useless parts as game-changing functions like IW did last year with the leaning and sliding.

          • xGolshixElitex

I never skip out on any game series I have been into, there is always a chance of it getting better or worse. It all depends on the overall feel of the game which is in your hands.

    • Mario Rivera

Change the engine, change the game. U guys cry for change every year without really knowing wat u are asking for only to end up crying for them to change them back…

      • HasimoPro

Useless reply.. Just like most of your comments here on CI..

    • Brady the Defiled (sillibk)

What do you want to see? Displacement mapping? Sub-d? People disliked and laughed at the arm hair from Ghosts and I found those people to be sickening, because Ghosts looks far from shit, in fact, I’d go to say that Ghosts DOES look like a next gen game.

  • Choppabro2psn

I have high hopes for advanced warfare, but than I think…. the same people who are playing ghosts will play this… ugh.

  • ccrows

Every time I see an “Advanced Warfare” article, I’m like “That’s nice but is wall climbing, cloaking, and jump boosts” gonna be in MP?

I seriously hope that all that stuff stays in campaign, otherwise it’s gonna be BO2 & Ghosts for another year for me while waiting for Trey 2015… 🙁

    • Xecho

HAHAHAHHAHAHA! Ohh you and you sad saps that don’t vvant call of duty to change even though you vvant it to. It’s sad really.

      • ccrows

        Ummmm…. No.. F*ck That!

COD4/BO2/Ghosts are my 3 favorite in the series. Simple formulas that worked. (I know some people hate BO2 or Ghosts, but whatever I liked them both)

WAW/MW2 are my most hated. Both of those games whether tanks or OMA/DC tried too hard to be different, and IMO just didn’t work. (yes I know MW2 was popular, but I have a laundry list of things why MW2 was broken)

I (and many other people that support Activision’s/CODs yearly record sales) want “COD”.

TL;DR -> All I want if the simple COD formula. If I want Halo or Titanfall, then I’ll buy those games…

        • MW2 is broken, I agree, but it is still fun, but if you don’t like it that’s fine with me!

      • thebulky1cometh

No, there’s a fine line between innovation as progression versus changing the makeup of the game entirely. There are certain pillars of COD that “cod vets” fully expect to see every time they purchase a new COD (insert OP weapons/bad spawns/camping jokes here).

If they change TOO much, 10-14 year olds will probably be happy and find the game “freaking sick, bro” and that’s about it.

  • Jasco

Really makes me excited for AW when so far in the interviews they sound and look like they have put a lot of hard work and effort into this. Audio in this game from the little we heard sounds amazing can’t wait

  • The Telephone Pole

    Is this the Krusty Krab?

  • Grigori

So awesome how they just record things we use daily and turn it in something really cool!

  • xGolshixElitex

People who play only Call of Duty look at Sledgehammer in bad ways, because of they think of MW3, not the best game of the series what so ever. When people say sledgehammer they should be going straight to Dead Space 2.

    • Plok

I think in the interview with the two heads of Sledgehammer (forget their names) they were saying that MW3 was a learning experience. The guys at IW knew the ins and outs of the series, they just needed extra men after the studio split. After that interview, it made me much more comfortable knowing that they were more involved in the creation process rather than the creative since they were not as familiar with Call of Duty

  • Ryumoau

That interview was amazing. Especially liked the part where he gave examples of them using pracitical items like an electric Shaver and garbage trucks to make the sounds for drones. 🙂

    • kyr95

Its amazing how you can make the most interesting sounds and effects. Reminded me of the Doctor Who theme where i learned is being made with a feather and a piano 😛

  • SkylineDesigns

Those new assault rifle and shotgun sounds. Oh my goodness it sounds better than battlefield

  • Ak

He mentioned the SPAS 12 Shotgun

  • Viktor

Did he just confirmed that there will be a Spas 12 in AW?

  • Brady the Defiled (sillibk)

Incredible. Looks like CoD will beat Battlefield 4’s audio this year.

  • SPAS-12 Confirmed!
