Digital Foundry has released their tech analysis for Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare today. Yesterday, Sledgehammer Games confirmed that Advanced Warfare runs at native 1380×1080 on Xbox One, upscaled to 1080p; however, according to Digital Foundry, during certain campaign missions – where action isn’t intense – the game reaches a full native 1080p quality. The multiplayer portion of the game remains at 1380×1080 quality.

For PS4, the game runs at a native 1080p across the entire game, but in the campaign mode, it does suffer frame rate drops. The game falls betwee 50-60FPS, hits a low of almost 48FPS at some points in the campaign mission.

Digital Foundry’s final verdict:

Overall, the final game is a satisfying upgrade from the previous builds we’ve played on the Microsoft console. Up until now, the PlayStation 4 version remained an enigma. Running at 1080p, its presentation remains king of course, while Microsoft’s hardware only occasionally shifts up to that resolution, typically in less demanding areas.

    Dang that sucks

  • Paul Thomas

I can live with a drop in the campaign. At least it plays well and the multiplayer isn’t a repeat of Ghost.

  • KevJumbaify .

Guys a zombie mode will be added in the DLC 😀

  • Will WilFredo Mendoza

    Karma for PS4?

Oh boy im gonna get flamed on -_-

    • Meh

      Karma for what?

      • Run N Gunning Camper

        For outsolding the XB1.

        • This Guy

I think he means all the bragging and boasting of superiority when it seems the system has trouble with 1080/60 and is not the beast Sony markets it as.

          • Run N Gunning Camper

The frame rate drop happens on SINGLE PLAYER scenes and it’s still beastly. While the XBOX One could NOT even consistently reach 1080p. If the PS4 isn’t a beast to you then the XB1 is a weakling to me.

          • This Guy

Hey I’m not bashing anything I’m just helping someone else understand Mendoza’s comment. Understandably the PS4 is having trouble keeping a steady 60fps in SP given how much is going on during it’s intense moments that MP won’t have. I’m no game developer, so I can’t explain to you why the SP is dynamically changing from 1380×1080 (aka Killzone 1080) to full 1080p while MP is staying at KZ:SF 1080p. Seems a bit backwards if you ask me, but all the same the PS4 is not a hulking powerhouse of a machine no more than the X1 is. Both have obsolete hardware. The two are very close and the games show it. Sure the PS4 will always have a graphical edge, but not enough to be noticeable without a synced up side-by-side. This is no different than last gen. The PS and Xbox are very close and the Wii is a gen behind. Nothing has changed.

  • Meh

IMO after playing AW multiplayer BO2, Multiplayer>AW Multiplayer.

  • Humza Qureshi

So far the game seems great besides the campers, but that’s expected. At least no one has unlocked the thermal or expol drone yet.

    • drjakeyoung

      Yea, about that…..

    • Bruce Wayne

      Also about that

    • Siftblade of Rivia

Campers will be in every COD. At least this is nowhere near the amount of campers BO2 and Ghosts had.

      • TheShadowReaper

the exo movement motivates even the unwilling to move their asses in the game. btw, has anyone finished the singleplayer mode? its huge! 5+ and it feels like i’m still half the way.

        • Siftblade of Rivia

I didn’t even start, just getting the double XP first.

          • TheShadowReaper

oh, have fun then cause its fucking amazing!

    • FlyingGrunt28

Sledgehammer should have allowed people to punch or kick through walls.
Imagine, chuck a threat grenade and see a guy camping. Jump behind the wall he is front of and punching him through the wall.

      • Humza Qureshi

I don’t know about that, couldn’t people make more spots to camp in?

  • jordanxbrookes

I’ve played the first two missions of Advanced Warfare, and the feeling in this game is absolutely satisfying. I am so happy right now 😀

I’ve played through the first 4 campaign missions, up until “Aftermath”. My in-depth, highly critical analysis:

I beat the campaign last night and it sucks not being able to say how it ends ): dammit. It gets better

      • IceKoldKilla

FINALLY someone does quality reviews on here. Most people play the whole game and make me read 30 mins. But you sir are a professional writer! You should be running IGN alone. We will remember you in history books.

Why thank you sir. And to give you an update, I’ve now reached the campaign mission “Sentinel”, and my commentary is as follows:
          Dayum this shit is good

And I don’t mean to toot my own horn, but you can expect similar ground-breaking writing once I can get my f’ing internet to work and download the patch and play online multiplayer

  • SERIOUS QUESTION. Why do all XBone footages have less gama/higher contrast in comparasin to ps4? I mean my ps4 games look saturated and nice on my tv but in all the comparisons it seems washed out.

    • Actually, it all depends on your TV settings as you can change the contrast/gamma there.

Having said that, there is something called ‘crushed black’ (noticeable in the video above) which affects XB1 version of games making them appear darker in some areas, thus making it seem more unnatural and it is used to hide texture detail.

I mean it’s not exactly a deal breaker, but it’s seen as a negative. You can read some Digital Foundry articles which explain it in more detail.

This is an example of ‘crushed blacks’ being used to hide texture detail in Battlefield 4

      http://i.minus.com/ib0gOrDzD8ScKG.gif

      • Wow thank you, this has always perplexed me. So basically more intense blacks to hide bad textures/ or so it doesn’t have to render those textures as much?

        • It’s used so it doesn’t have to render the details on the textures. So the latter statement is true mate 😉

So your statement “or so it doesn’t have to render those textures as much?” is the correct one 😉

      • TheShadowReaper

it actually tries to hide the bad rendered textures using a lot of black tones. we’ve seen the same thing with the 360 last gen, especially with games that it couldnt handle at all. great examples: BF3, Metro 2033.

not that the PS3 was any better but it had a little bit more fidelity than the 360 version, the same as PS4 has more detail than the XB1.

        • TehShadewRaeper

Wait your a PC Master Racist u don’t play consoles, they don’t have the “Graphical Capabilities” like pc’s do

        • Ben

The multiplatform games on PS3 was mostly worse than on X360, just sayin…

          • TheShadowReaper

in terms of graphical fidelity, the PS3 games are superior when devs arent lazy and they try to utilize the cell processor. if they do not utilize it, XB360 versions are superior. that’s how it goes.

          • Exactly, which is why PS3 exclusives looked better than the 360 exclusives, because when it came down to raw power, the first party developers could fully utlitise PS3’s power.

Unfortunately, with multiplatform developers, they have to develop multiple versions and go for parity, so they couldn’t utilize PS3 properly.

You only have to look at each respective year to see how better PS3 graphics were: whether it was in 2007 with Uncharted, or 2009 with Uncharted 2, or 2010 with God of War 3, or Uncharted 3 in 2011, God of War Ascension ir 2013 or The Last of Us in 2013 – the exclusives on PS3 looked the best, especially for a piece of hardware with only 512mb of RAM.

          • TheShadowReaper

that’s exactly my point. although i dont believe it was because the devs wanted parity between the systems. it was because it would take time and resources (money) to invest into learning the cell processor and develop for it. so instead of losing money they opted to not learn about using it and created parity, because its easier and costs less of course. and since not many complained cause nearly no one knew the cell processor’s capabilities, the devs didnt had to deal with “parity” controversy which of course was more than a blessing to them since nothing was in between them and the consumer’s money! ^^

          • Perfectly put mate! 🙂

          • Ben

            No shit sherlock.

          • TheShadowReaper

Oh well, BF4 looks better on XO

        • Sure kid ….unless you don’t want to believe Digital Foundry, the industry’s most reputable and reliable tech analysts, then keep believing in your own fanboy delusions.

          • AC

Sorry, but I don’t need somebody else telling me what I need to know. I am not a puppet.

          • LOL.

Mate, I think it’s the fact YOU DON’T WANT TO KNOW because these are stone cold FACTS. You can never ignore them. The evidence is out there. These are just the source that are presenting them.

  • EDIT: I hope CharlieINTEL post this. The frame rate is much more stable for multiplayer on PS4, in fact it’s basically locked 60fps apart from a few, VERY short instances, one of which is during a killcam (which doesn’t affect gameplay anyway)

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7CaMFypV8Z8

    EDIT OVER

Hmmm, would I have liked it at 60fps locked? Yes.

Is it a deal breaker? Not really – most of those dips within the 50s aren’t actually noticeable while you’re playing it (unlike Ghosts). I mean it’s not exactly dropping drastically. Besides, I’d rather that than screen tearing IMO.

IMO the locked 60fps is needed in multiplayer (for obvious reasons).

TL;DR – Play games not frames. I think both versions of the game will be fantastic to play on both next gen consoles.

Whether it’s the 1080p dynamic resolution or native 1080p resolution, I don’t think XB1 owners will throw their copy out of the window for not being native 1080p at all times, nor will PS4 owners throw their copies out of the window for not being 60fps at all times.

    • Kobrah

      Well said

    • 111AlaN111

Yeah, but if Activision, Sony or SHG, say that the game will be 1080p 60fps, they need to give a QUALITY 1080p 60fps. Something that I hate is Sony (and now also MS) making a “lets reach 1080p” war and forgetting to give a quality service.

      • Well they’ret not really going to say “oh it runs at 60fps most of the time, but a few times it drops to the low 50’s…” are they?

1080p 60fps is so much easier to say to people especially when marketing their product. Besides they never said LOCKED 60fps. Most 60fps CoDs weren’t locked last gen. Besides, we should be more worride about multiplayer, which by the way is locked 60fps on PS4 (apart from 2 instances, one of which is during a kill cam)

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7CaMFypV8Z8

        • 111AlaN111

I agree with you, but what I hate is that people believe that 1080p 60fps (with all its drops) is better than 900p 60fps without drops. And also the game not being of quality.

If I was Sony, then would it be good to say that a game is 1080p 60fps when the game drops to 20fps lots of times? I didn’t say it was locked, so it’s ok, am I right?

    • Ben

As far as I know the framerate drops only in the campaign mode. IMO it doesn’t really matter there…

  • skeetshootin

This game is so bad, I cant believe anyone likes these gay ass guns, if you do love this game however, exo jump on top of a building and gangbang each other…..waiting for the next modern warfare

    • The Flash

why come here if you think the game is bad?

      • skeetshootin

Because I like call of duty, I have the pro edition of this crappy game, and ill come here if i wanna cum here

        • Bruce Wayne

So you think the game is bad but you still buy the pro edition…..

          • skeetshootin

It just came out dude, didnt think it was gonna suck so bad. Trying to save people money dick wayne

          • Stefan Lang

Stop your bitching and adjust to it first.

          • Favorite Ape

I appreciate that. Still deciding whether to buy the game. Metacritic numbers for this game are looking almost like ghosts. No dedi’s and the zombie B.S. and I’m not so sure I’m getting this one. Oh well, gta 5 in two weeks.

          • skeetshootin

Yeah buddy, and this is just my opinion on this game, some people may like it, I however do not. Just rent it first, wish I would have!

          • Favorite Ape

Renting sounds like a good idea. Thanks.

Where do you go to give your honest review of the game? Is this forum just for nut juggling?

    • ccrows

I hated it at first, but it’s slowly growing on me.

Definitely better than Ghosts. Don’t know if it will be as good as BO2, but who knows.

Dead Silence needs to be a perk though. Just too much camping, and idiots listening for footsteps…

      • Bruce Wayne

i think it’s fine as an exo ability it just needs to be a bit longer

      • Siftblade of Rivia

The exo perk actually works fairly well. it lasts quite a bit and you can toggle it on and off. Super useful if you know where an enemy is, they’ll never hear you coming.

        • ccrows

& I get that but when you are in a lobby with a few corner campers, you can only do so much after your battery runs out. even if you toggle it.

IDK, I guess Wireless Charging isn’t strong enough to charge batteries in the future… <_<

    • Bruce Wayne

good luck waiting for the next modern warfare considering infinity wards next game is ghosts 2.0

  • Are We Not Young God?

I need advice! is the PC port for the game good? Debating whether to just buy the Ps4 version and that’s it.

    • Ben

People saying it’s good, but some guys suffering from lagging in the starting of the multiplayer rounds… maybe they have the Shader Preload enabled (afaik that can cause that), maybe it has a similiar VRAM leak bug as found (and never fixed) in Ghosts.

Anyways, the PC players I know bought the game are pretty much satisfied with it. But it’s similiar to the console version… sure it has a few PC-oriented features (FoV-scaling, deeper graphics options) but the main features are the same – the menu layout, the matchmaking which is p2p-based so it’s not running on dedicated servers at all and it hasn’t got a server browser (which is a dealbreaker for me), so it’s the same as every CoD on PC in the past 3 years.

Advice? Buy it for PS4, it will have a waaay larger online community. I got it for XO because of the same reasons – I will find players in the game after years, unlike in Ghosts on PC. But BO2 is standing still with his daily ~10-15k playerbase on PC… but that’s not always enough for me.

It’s mainly because the spawns are terrible.

lol the spawns aren’t terrible in the game. don’t blame it on the spawns you’re just bad which is okay. get better though

        • Juses

Uhh… Have you played the game? Do you not look on Twitter, reddit and the forums? The spawns are terrible.

  • AmbitiionYT

Is the game lagging for anyone else really bad???, I’m on the ps4 and almost all of the games I’m lagging bad, so I hoped on the PS3 on black ops 2 to see if it was my connection and it wasn’t. So is it my connection or the servers connection???

      • SPAWNST4R

    • Ryumoau

You’re pretty stupid if you actually believe the multiplayer in this game looks like Black ops 2. I’m playing on ps4 and nothing about it looks like BO2, or even ghosts for that matter.

      • Diego Diniz

IM playing on PC until my PS4 come back from Warranty. I really dont like the Graphics here. Maps like “Greenband” have poor graphics! PS4, Xbox One and all Nvidia VGA can do more than these graphics! Cmon…

          Results may vary.

  • Ryumoau

I’ve finished the campaign on the ps4 version yesterday and was pleased not only with the story itself but the visuals. I personally didn’t notice any hiccups in gameplay, so it must have been very rare occasions. Still really happy that Sledgehammer was able to deliver such a great looking game that plays even better than previous CoD games i’ve experienced. 🙂

    • LovekillerX

I haven’t played the story yet so much, right now I’m doing “Manhunt” and for me this game is smooth and no problems at all on PS4… or then I didn’t spot that frame rate drop. Although there were big explosion it was still smooth for me at least.

I can safely say that this game takes my favourite game spot. Before it was MW3 but now it is AW > MW3 > MW2 > Ghosts.

      • Ryumoau

i didn’t like any of the Infinity Ward campaigns, outside of CoD4 and MW2. But i will say AW was even better than Black Ops 1, which was my favorite campaign till now.

  • jooker-jr

the ps4 is suffering because the stupid fanboys who say : we have the best graphics, we have 1080p, xbox sucks because its 900p.
