With Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 eSports officially switching over to PS4, there’s bound to be gamers in the market looking for the best controller to use. We’ve been using the SCUF 4PS for a while now – we also tested it by playing the Black Ops III beta on PS4 – and today we’re posting our impressions and review of using the controller.

Grip

The SCUF 4PS matches the SCUF One with it’s fantastic grip. That’s one of the features that really brings us to use any SCUF controller. SCUF has always delivered on point with their grips, and SCUF 4PS is no exception.

EMR

In addition, the SCUF 4PS also have upgradable option of the Electro Magnetic Remapping feature. This allows you, with a SCUF Magnetic key, to change the paddle layouts whenever you want. So if you don’t like button format you chose originally, you can change it at anytime.

Paddles/Movement

In Black Ops 3, the new movement system features thrust jumps, power slides, and more, and the SCUF paddles might help with continuous shooting while moving and thrust jumping, but…

The difference between using a SCUF with Black Ops 3 and Advanced Warfare is big – Advanced Warfare was all about precision movement, with players moving in all directions at all times with the Exo Movements. For competitive players, SCUF controllers greatly assisted with that Exo movements. Having the paddles allowed for quick, small movements without losing your hand placement. But with Black Ops 3, that’s not the case. The game has brought back a lot of the focus to ‘boots on the ground’ and using the SCUF is not really needed with this movement systemWe were able to be successful in Black Ops 3 using a regular PS4 controller – without paddles – just as we were with using the SCUF 4PS on the Black Ops 3 beta. Paddles – for many – were to help move around the map and get right back into the action as fast as possible, but in Black Ops 3, your character is already ‘guns-up’ always, so you’re basically always in the action, regardless. It felt odd at many times using the paddles to thrust jump instead of using the X button. The controller is already small enough to allow you to move your fingers quickly to the buttons, without having to use paddles.

There is no feeling of needing a SCUF on PS4, while that feeling did exist on the Xbox One. Xbox One controller is larger in size, and thus, the paddles greatly assisted with movements in Call of Duty games. But on PS4, we were easily able to play Black Ops 3 at the same pace, using the movements effectively with the regular PS4 controller and on the SCUF 4PS.

The only real advantage of using a SCUF 4PS to play Black Ops 3 – or really, another FPS shooter – would be for the quality grip it provides and custom dome analog sticks. And this is for Black Ops 3 only. Of course, SCUF has been around for many years – throughout Black Ops 2 and Ghosts – and offered an excellent advantages in those titles, but again, those were played on Xbox platforms. eSports players on Xbox loved the comfort and abilities available on the SCUF Xbox 360 controllers.

Even with this being said, the SCUF 4PS – as expected – meets the standards of all SCUF controllers; the design, the feel all are up to par from what you expect from SCUF.

Conclusion

SCUF 4PS is a fantastic controller, for those looking into buying a new controller as the Black Ops 3 eSports season kicks off soon. The controller is especially fitting for those players just transitioning to PS4 from another platform; the SCUF 4PS could help with adjusting to the new controller style and button location.

If you are transitioning from the Xbox One, and used the SCUF One, the SCUF 4PS allows for a similar feel as you start to adjust to the new controller. Having the paddles can assist players with the transition, as we have seen many Xbox One players complain about the size and location of buttons/analog sticks on the PS4 controller.

But if you have been on PS4 all along or used a PS3 before, there is really no need for a SCUF. While it does provide an excellent feature set, there is no real advantage of rushing out and buying one if you already enjoy the regular PS4 DUALSHOCK 4 controller for casual gamers. If you’re planning on getting into competitive scene, then you should definitely consider buying a SCUF 4PS. The 4PS offers the best performance over the regular controller for advantages in intense eSports matches.

    I like the honesty
Tmartn would be like “OMG GUYS, I’m SUPER excited to tell u about scuf controller , derp

    • Keshav Bhat

I read everyone’s feedback from my SCUF One review and wanted to be as honest as possible.

      • Kyle Hubbard

Sorry, but I just wanted to clarify: Is CharlieIntel sponsored by SCUF?

        • Nope.

          • Kyle Hubbard

Thanks. I was confident they weren’t, but after the FTC Machinina fiasco, it’s good to make it known.

    • EJ

      ??? Truth

  • VVFZ

Failed to mention how easily the paddles get worn out after just a few weeks or months, an issue that almost everyone with a scuf has. Or how the scuf sticks are ridiculously slippery if you get sweaty hands while playing. Or how terrible their customer service.

Yes it feels like a million bucks when you open it up for the first time, but when your A paddle jams after a month and your domed stick starts peeling that feeling will wear off pretty quickly.

If you’re gonna do one of these, research about other user’s experiences with the scuf controller and add that to the end of your review, since your goal here is to inform people about Scuf. Just stating the pros like you did here is VERY misleading. I fell for this trap after watching countless amounts of YTers and Pros praise scuf. It’s a nice controller, it just breaks easily and needs replacing.

    • zack

Agree. Scuf will soon be going out of business. Xbox just rolled out the Xbox elite controller which looks a Lot better than the Scuf and half the price. I’m sure PlayStation will follow suit and make their own controller as well.

      • VVFZ

They won’t be going out of business for the most part mainly because the base elite controller in the US is more expensive than a base scuf. It’s a shame.

        • zack

I wasn’t aware of that. I paid almost $250 for my Scuf and I thought the elite was only $150.

          • VVFZ

Yeah that’s when you buff it up with features that admittedly are almost a necessity (trigger stops, grips, etc.). But the basic SCUF FPS with just paddles for the One is now $99 + shipping at most it’ll be around $110. + they have pros constantly endorsing them so they’ll get business either way without having to change their ways sadly.

    • Yankeephil

This is most likely Scuf giving them a sizeable donation for a positive review

  • Ysi

    Furst

  • ScOott

I heard they don’t last very long, and when something does go wrong, customer service is terrible.. I would be scared to pay so much money over the Internet for a controller, that’s why I was so hyped for the elite controller on xbox one.. I really hope sony make there own I’d buy one just like that ..

    • Baruck Obumo

yeah you do need to take care of them, but the rubber on thumbstick wear off in 3 months.

    • I learned that the hard way. I had to get my left stick fixed because of AW. Now my A paddle is soft. Idk, I guess I’ll just deal with it. :/

    • ccrows

Believe the hype, the controllers don’t last long. CS is frustrating, and the YTers that promote the controllers the most get them for free.

^ That basically sums up my soapbox rant…

    • Yup, never bought a SCUF or similar type controller but I have a pre-order in for the Elite controller.

    • DanDustEmOff

Depends I had one for the 360 and it was great, the only issue was that the chat mic port wouldn’t work with my Astro’s but that was an issue with Astro’s firmware and it eventually got patched. Now although the controller was great the service was terrible.

After ordering I had several delays and in the end I got so sick of waiting I ended up driving to their place of business to pick it up. The funniest part was when I got there it was a small room attached to the side of a corner shop, when I got there everything fell into place.

The UK base is a tiny set up which is why the support and service is so bad, but as a product they are great. You may be interested in a Cronus Max Plus it allows you to use any controller on any system with no noticeable latency so you could buy an elite controller and use it on the PS4, if you wanted to.

      • ScOott

Can you 😮 I’d love to use the elite controller! As long as it’s not to much expense on top, or to complicated, il look into it thanks!

        • DanDustEmOff

It’s £50. I am currently looking into it myself as I plan on getting a PS4 to play BO3 on but I just don’t get on with the PS4 controller.

  • GinsuVictim

No mention of that blob in place of the D-pad? What the hell is that crap?

    • Yankeephil

It’s an added option. There’s a few different Dpad choices

  • ItzSikh

When CI starts to get PS Bias just because of console switch

    • ScOott

They all ready done the xbox one version

    • GinsuVictim

You’re pretty far off the mark there.

    • Kurama The Nine-Tailed Fox

When salty Xbox One fan boys don’t want any good news about the PS4 to be released on Charlie Intel…

      • ItzSikh

not really a X1 fan but just stating that CI is starting to become PS bias, I’ve got both consoles which really isn’t a problem and I love them both so…

        • Jasy

Then you had no need to say that comment.

          • ItzSikh

just saying what I think is happening there’s no problem in that

        • Kurama The Nine-Tailed Fox

PS4 is much more relevant to COD than ever before so it’s a given that COD articles will also start to relate to PS4 also…. CI isn’t starting to become bias at all, CI is just reporting relevant news related to COD like they always have.

Are you suggesting CI shouldn’t have posted this article? or that SCUF 4PS is bad?

If so you clearly have a preference for your Xbox (fan boyism) or you was hoping Xbox fan boys would up-vote your comment. OR you was hoping this review would show SCUF 4PS in a bad light, stating that comment just means your the one that’s actually biased.

When CI made an article for SCUF One why didn’t you write a comment saying “CI is bias to Xbox One”? There is nothing bias about reviewing a product that may interest COD fans.

          • ItzSikh

Ok… I’m not starting an argument since it was an opinion that kind of seemed a bit bias and as I said I’m no X1 fanboy I prefer both my consoles and I didn’t notice about scuf one article as I was on holiday at that time.

    • Keshav Bhat

We are not PS Bias. I’m not sure where you got this from. I reviewed a SCUF One as well. Next year, we will continue to report news on PS4, Xbox One, PC, Xbox 360, and PS3 versions of Black Ops 3 with all the updates. I like all platforms. People can play whatever they like. But, at the end of the day, I enjoy playing on a PS4. That’s my choice cause I enjoy PS4 experience over the Xbox One experience. Just my opinion. You can enjoy the Xbox One, PC etc…that’s fine too.

      • ItzSikh

I’m really sorry Keshav please forgive me.

        • Keshav Bhat

You don’t have to apologize. I’m just stating my point of view on this.

  • theeeNerd

I own 2 SCUF 4PS controllers, and yes, they did help you a lot if you want to either knife quicker(using tactical button layout) or you want to jump shot. But their modding quality is significantly worse than the xbox scuf. The back paddle won’t click after maybe 2 – 3 months, the scuf stick is nice at first, but it breaks apart real quick(I don’t know if I am pushing those sticks too hard), and once they did break, you have no way to open the controller up to fix it yourself. And, the post-sale customer service is really terrible, really really terrible.

  • Guywithbrains

This is just my opinion but I think SCUF controllers should be banned from public multiplayer lobbies. Although I don’t know how they could do it but it is unfair if you think about it.

    • Kyle Hubbard

I used to think that SCUF controllers were unfair too. But if they are unfair then so is Claw Grip (how can you ban that) which gives same buffs as Scuf, so are headphones because if you have a decent pair you have an advantage over people using TV speakers, control freeks etc.

  • Johtoboy

So are you going to be reviewing other tournament controllers like Cinch, Sharq Imagine Customs and Battle Beaver? It’d be nice to have a comparison.

  • Matthew

    #MakeItACinch

  • Greasy Neckbeard

Don’t understand why anyone would waste $150 on a controller

    • Siftblade

Same. Completely unnecessary, I do good without one.

      • jordanxxxbrookes

Concur. It just seems like one of those things that once you use it you’ll convince yourself that you can’t play without one. A decent headset for sound whoring and maybe a Kontrol Freek is all that’s needed.

I also wonder how these controllers affect other games.

        • DanDustEmOff

They don’t work well in driving games as the triggers are semi depressed so you always have your accelerator and brake slightly on at the same time. They are great for FPS games and once using one for a while it is very difficult to go back to a normal controller.

    • cbns007

Even worse at around $220 Canadian with shipping. :/

  • Michael Owen Caffrey

So as an xbox one owner i prefer the consol i have for the exclusives and comunity they just suit me better but cod is one of the buggest gamea i play i actually play with my mom (who runs a clan might i add) and i have met people in real life that we have met on the internet
But anyway before i gwt off track i whant to know what ps3 useres (that played mostly cod) did while waiting for dlc, should i watch videos on the new content or let it be a surprise for when it comes out. Not looking for any hate or a flame war just whant to know what psn users did while waitiing

    • ScOott

They sat crying watching video after video for a month

      Or not!

Bit of stupid question tbh if you want to see gameplay watch it, if you want it to be a surprise don’t watch it, surely you can figure this out for your self ?

Play the maps you will have or play a different game, or go out side, it’s your life you decide lol..

      • WhiskeyDick

The crying bit was far fetched, it’s 30 days, if you’re not super duper excited boooooys about extra maps, the wait goes by fairly quickly… As Scott said…. You decide what to do while you wait, create an elaborate masturbation hut out of an old refridgerator box if that’s what tickles your pickle! The possibilities are endless

        • ScOott

Lol that bit i was being sarcastic it was ment to be little far fetched.. I think you put it better tho.. +1

      • Snafflelophagus

Calm down Eric! and get down from that high horse

He might just be 10 years old (look at the spelling, playing with mom etc), playing with the comments section on CI for the first time.

Don’t be that Eric Cartman who ate all the skin off KFC and made Scott Tenorman eat his parents.

        • ScOott

Lmao, I’m always calm dough, I’m kewl, jus explaing to him how stupid it sounds when people ask that question.. *gets off high horse* sorry ..

          • Snafflelophagus

            You respect my authoritah! LOL

    • Siftblade

Avoid zombies gameplay/story that give away all the maps, hidden secrets, and easter eggs (if you care about the story). MP maps don’t really make a difference whether you see them early or not.

You could watch as much zombies stuff as you want, just be warned that once it comes out, it’ll feel like you’ve been playing it for a month since you’ve seen so many videos on it.

    • Kobrah

As a PS player, I would watch the YouTube videos and game plays, but when they finally released I felt I already knew the maps which kind of spoiled the experience. Micro-DLC is even worse though, you get pumped up about a new gun or camo but a month later you just don’t give a shit.

      • cbns007

I agree. The crazy amount of micro-DLC’s for AW were a bigger thing for me than the actual map packs.

    • ccrows

Really not understanding what your point is, unless it’s what should you do for the 30 that Sony gets DLC first?

^ Here let me answer your question by saying, “Just do whatever you did when Sony got the BO3 Beta first”…

  • J4MES

I’ve never been a fan of SCUF or other modded controllers. I used a knackered 360 pad for years on the old gen and it did the job. Any decent COD player can easily handle themselves with the standard ones anyway. These just seem to be over-engineered, extremely expensive and a complete waste of money for just playing COD. It’s not like the mechanics of the COD games are difficult either.

    • DanDustEmOff

Yes they do a good job but being able to keep your finger on the stick whilst jumping reloading and using melee can greatly improve your game and the quick response on the triggers also adds a benefit.

  • Where is Juses? Did he die for our memes?

    • The memes were too dank for him to handle

    • Juses

      Reught heure. Am bek fagitz.

  • Ratboy

I ordered my scuf with EMR. Came without the key..

    • Lmao! Scuf customer service isn’t the best to be honest. :/

      • Ratboy

        ikr..

  • Chromium

Honestly… I don’t see myself ever getting another SCUF controller, I had a SCUF Avenged Hybrid, with all of the upgrades except EMR, and it started going bad 4-5 months after I bought it. First, my A paddle (which was kinda abused… I was playing ALOT of AW) started acting funny, only working 75% of the time. A month later… my mic port stopped working. I could talk through it… Just couldn’t hear people. Then I realized that I wasted $200 on a piece of shit controller that doesn’t even work correctly. Customer Support screws you over every time by not picking up the phone, even though you called them 20+ times. This is exactly why I’m NEVER buying another SCUF Controller again. So be aware…

  • GTA V

Does it have a dildo attachment?

    • Why would you need that? :/

      • Kyle Soule

        Because he is gay.

        • Oh okay…

          • GTA V

Because for the price of the remote I might as well get fucked.

          • True…

The funny thing about this is that Ps4/ps3 is the preferred console to watch porn on.

I actually died laughing when I saw the article

          Sony Ponies are pretty horny

          • MichiganerE

I suppose those horny ponies are in quite the equine heat ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

  • LovekillerX

That controller looks so cool but I don’t see why I should spend so much money to CONTROLLER. I could get two PS4 games instead with that money.

    • lunator100hd .

More than this there is a possibility to malfunction in some point, i heard many ppl to complain about it.

  • NOVA_POLARIS

you don’t know how excited I got when I clicked on Charlie Intel and saw a ps4 controller. I thought they finally announced a bo3 ps4 controller…

  • spartanelite

    Stupid

    • Kobrah

      What is?

  • Ryumoau

Nice. I don’t think i’ll ever get one though since i just glanced at the prices and they are way too much for me. I already think $60 is overpriced for the official Sony controllers.

    • FazalGaming

They need some 3rd party controllers.

  • Work Hard, Twerk Harder

Funnily enough I’ve been looking all over about scuf controllers (even looked at the xbox one review on here posted around a year ago) and I’m happy that finally I found a review with how effective it was in the BO3.

The only thing I want to ask now though is if you ever did want to play without using the paddles, do they ever get uninteionally pressed because of the position of them?
I’m only asking this as I can’t find anyone mentioning it oline and I’m going to be doing the cheap method of getting a scuf where you send in your own controller so I won’t have a spare.

    • Keshav Bhat

Yeah, the positioning on the PS4 controller is odd. Because of the small size of the controller, you do occasionally tap the paddles in the back because your fingers are already resting on them.

      • Work Hard, Twerk Harder

Alright then, thanks so much for the reply! I thinkthen I’ll give my plain old controller at least a bit of time with Black Ops 3 but regardless I really appreciate the honest review and just hope that those who seem to think this article is an advertisement or whatever don’t bother you so much. 🙂

  • CSGOKING

Why do people spend so much money on these controllers when the game has aim assist anyway? CoD = no skill needed.

    • FazalGaming

I hate people who play 1 game of COD at a a friends house and think COD is like that. Let me tell you one thing… SBMM, something CS GO doesn’t have. CS GO players think they are OP by beating some rank 2’s that haven’t even unlocked competitive yet. Meanwhile COD sets you up against people with the same skill as you, so if you think it’s easy, you must have been pretty shit to be matched with easy people

      • CSGOKING

I’ve been playing CoD since 2003. My K/D on AW was 3.91 and it’s by far the easiest and worst game to date. CSGO demands proper skill unlike CoD which is noob-friendly and all about ‘kill’streaks. BO3 also felt really easy too especially with the perk that tells you where the enemies are lmao! If you think CoD is hard; you simply suck which is embarrassing seeing most of the community are kids.

        • FazalGaming

Alright we all have our own opinions but if you don’t like COD why come to a COD website and preach about how shit it is.

          • CSGOKING

I didn’t – I simply said that these controllers are pointless when the game has adequate assists in place with standard pads and that the game doesn’t require skill. The game has lost over 10m players in the last two years because it’s become boring, overly simplistic and the competitive element is exceptionally weak. I’ve been playing this franchise since day one and probably before 99% of this forum had even heard of it and the direction it has taken is shambolic and these controllers just add insult to injury as brand power takes over basic logic.

  • Ak74u

Wish we could get some more zombies info so far all we know is the Giant remake, Shadows of Evil, and gumball abilities. I want to know about the game modes available for zombies. And what innovation they have brought.

    • LovekillerX

Shadows of Evil looks so much more promising compared to earlier Zombies maps IMO. Can’t wait to get my hands on that gumball machine! 🙂

    • matt murdock

and i wish they announced what they are to show in the next coming weeks so i have something to look forward to like a trailer, they still haven’t revealed story for campaign (zombies and normal), and you are exactly right, i want them to advertise the innovation i know they are bringing to the table, sell the fucker

  • ToonToons22

This controller seems like a pretty good addition to a serious gamer’s collection, but there do seem to be a few issues about it.

The controller is way too expensive. I mean, at $120, you can buy two to three games for the same amount of money. It just seems too overpriced for a controller with only a few added features. You can get a modded controller with more features for a lower price.

From what I’ve heard on this comment board, many people who bought this controller are not too satisfied with its quality. I have heard people talk about malfunctions, missing buttons, bad customer service, etc. I can see some people getting controllers that work fine, but just these problems alone can turn away a lot of customers.

And another thing, gamers who are good at playing Call of Duty and other FPS games don’t need this controller anyway! They can make do with the standard PlayStation controller.

    • Yeah, I mean seriously, these little buttons are supposed to survive thousands of presses, but they don’t. They are made cheaply.

  • Ryu0rKen

From someone who has used both a scuf and cinch on ps4 I recommend the cinch more. The buttons are more responsive and it allows for 4 of them instead of 2 and adjustable trigger stops available. Also I don’t agree that they aren’t needed as much as they were in AW. I actually think they are needed more for especially for thrusting on a wall run and back and forth with firing your guns at enemies.

  • ben wills

Charlie intel makin mad paid review bank now

    • They aren’t paid but Scuf, just sayin’.

      • ben wills

They clearly were to make this ad review here

        • Read my new comment, Keshav said he wasn’t paid. 😉

        • Keshav Bhat

Clearly we weren’t, but you are free to think like that if you want. My bank account from working at CI will continue to have only $0 in it.

    • Kobrah

CI (Keshav) have stated numerous times (on this article and others) that this was not a paid/sponsored article and that CI is not sponsered/biased to Sony/MS or any other company.

      • ScOott

Although you could forgive him for thinking such a thing, as you got top comment thinking pretty much the same thing :-p lol ..

  • READ THE COMMENTS SECTION OF THIS ARTICLE. CI WAS NOT PAID TO POST THIS REVIEW.

    http://charlieintel.com/2014/08/14/scuf-one-xbox-one-controller-review/

    • Greasy Neckbeard

      Thanks for clearing this up.

    • uMug

Yeah, just like Ali-A, Tmartn and Drift0r aren’t paid to promote either..

      • FATHEAD661

Wait… I thought DriftOr was actually sponsored by Scuf? Therefore he’s paid by them…

      • Keshav Bhat

AliA, TmarTn, etc… all have their own branded SCUF and are sponsored by them. We aren’t sponsored by them nor do we even have our own branded SCUF controller. Plus, why would they pay me to tell you guys to not buy their controller if you already have regular PS4 controller?

  • lunator100hd .

Can anyone do an elite vs scuf controler review?

  • Guywithbrains

Assuming he is talking about Rejack I think people just cried for nothing. I didn’t have any problems killing Rejack user: just shoot that green smoke or throw your lethal to it as many people did. And fix your aim if you failed miserably. #bringbackoldrejack

    https://twitter.com/DavidVonderhaar/status/642419602761363458

    • LovekillerX

I hope they bring back old Rejack because there wasn’t a single problem with it. As you said above, people should fix their aim. Instead of shooting the smoke you could actually run away to cover and shoot again. Just get better if you get beated by Rejack.

Rejack is actually useless now if you lose your scorestreak. It basically means respawning.

      • Ak74u

No I don’t think it’s fair to be able to come back after you’ve killed an enemy and they still get to keep their streaks. Rejacked should be out of the game if they want a good game. It’s a cheap ability its like a better version of final stand

        • LovekillerX

Yeah but instead of making it useless remove it from the game or keep it as it was earlier. No point to have specialist which basically respawns.

          • Tricky VIk

“Hmm maybe make it if the person who dies that has Rejack to only get half of the score he had before he died?”
            “Just my two cents.”

That’s why it should be removed because if you were able to keep your streak going there’s a problem and now that they made it that you can’t keep it, it’s useless so it should be out although I don’t really care much if it stays in or not.

Scuf controllers are getting better in customization but cheap and just stupidly over priced for what you get.

So how much for a PS4 Scuf controller?

  • Shane Asman

Or you can switch your button layout to bumper jumper, using your PS4’s own Custom Button Assignment option for FREE. In fact, here’s a step by step tutorial:

I had sent in a ps4 controller and had it worked on and modded for scuf (did so after my rubber began to come off) i had kontrol freeks gave them away in a youtube contest didnt like them too much. I would have to disagree with the post though that says you dont need a scuf, of course you dont need one but having a scuf modded controller does help tons in BO3 just as it did with AW or any of the previous COD’s the crucial factor to me is the ability to jump/or go prone at any time and still be able to zoom in on iron sight/shoot and also move around and look at your target anywhere. you cant do that plain and simple on a regular PS4 controller. you have to take your thumb off the right analog double tap x or hold circle impairing your ability to look around and turn your body in the game. for that piece scuf is worth it everytime. since owning a scuf fully my gameplay between AW and BO3 is completely different im a run and gun player and my kd has doubled just about since getting use to the scuf and training yourself to use those back paddles. Super noticeable in core game play hardcore not so much but still noticeable. along with the grip in the back and also the option to replace the left and right analog sticks to higher sticks (no kontrol freeks needed) and also get rid of the cheap rubber sony continues to use makes using your current ps4 controller sending it in and having it modded and sent back to you the best option in my opinon and considerably cheaper!
