Treyarch’s Jason Blundell, in an interview with EuroGamer, stated that Treyarch does not have plans to make Call of Duty Zombies a standalone game. He stated that they want to offer multiple modes to allow flexibility and fans to pick which mode they want – including Zombies.

“We’ve got to cater for a lot of people,” Jason Blundell, director of campaign and Zombies for Call of Duty: Black Ops 3, told Eurogamer.

“Sometimes you want to watch a movie and want to be engaged narratively on a concept. And then we have multiplayer – sometimes you just want to run around and have that high engagement experience. And sometimes you want to kill the undead – sometimes you want to play Zombies.

“We see by the numbers and how people engage with the game as a whole, people change that feeling. They’ll move between the different modes.”

As announced earlier this year, Treyarch has made it in Black Ops 3 that all three modes – campaign, multiplayer, and zombies are no longer different exe files.

“We’ve made a unified .exe for the first time, which means all three modes run from the same place,” Blundell explained.

“So when you party up, you can move between each one. There’s no unloading the .exe. In previous games you’d see it go to black and then it would come back up again. You can seamlessly move because now all three are online.”

Blundell elaborated further stating:

“While it’s a lovely sentiment on the idea of breaking Zombies out into its own separate game, we see that people move between all three modes,” Blundell continued.

“And we’re always about giving as much content, as much value for money, as we possibly can. That’s why we pack our disc with as many game modes as we have currently.

“What started as being very much a bonus mode in Zombies has now become a third pillar. We have this massive campaign now. We’ve got the juggernaut, which is multiplayer. And now for the first time Zombies has taken off as being a full-on experience.

“It’s really about flexibility and variety of choice for the amount of people who buy our games.”

Yeah, we get it. People like SP and MP too. The point is, those people won’t be buying the Zombies collection. I just want to play the old maps on my PS4. Activision would make tons of extra sales from just a collection, as they could sell it side by side with a COD game. I don’t understand why it’s so hard for them to take the maps they already made and resell them on PS4. I’m not saying BO3 should’ve been Zombies only or whatever like they’re making it out to be, we just want a standalone bundle with all of our favorite maps, separate from the main game. Perfect example of this is Uncharted 5 and the Nathan Drake Collection.

    • Just wait my friend. In a few years the Remasters will come and we will get to experience the old CODs in all their glory. Patience is key 🙂

      • Siftblade

Yeah, I know. I just miss zombies lol. Haven’t been able to play them since I got a PS4.

        • The Flash

shame, i got my Xbone and my trusty 360 still, so i can still play BO1/2 on my 360 while playing exo zombs on my xbone

          • Siftblade

My PS3 died so I had to upgrade. Shame, it survived for a good 5+ years though :p

        • Ricardo Rodriguez

Same.. Not really a big fan of Exo zombies

        • If your have a mediocre to decent PC you can play World at War Zombies and download a bunch of cool new maps fans have created. Even a Decent PC should be able to play BO1 and BO2 Zombies. My laptop can. I’m just giving you some options 🙂

          • Siftblade

I have some parts shipping right now, already working on it. Just waiting for the graphics card and the case to arrive :p

          • What kind of graphics card are you getting? ?

          • Siftblade

GTX 970. Lots of my friends play PC so I figured I might as well go all in if I’m going to start getting into it

          • Nice

          • BradyAlucard[sillibk]

I have an R3/A4 6210 APU laptop, and I can play Battlefield 3 on a playable frame rate with 16-32 players decently, so I’d definitely be able to run Black Ops 2 at 20-30 FPS (being a console pleb I can play at those frame rates easily and I’m not bad at FPS games so that’s a plus). I can already play World at War maps. I just need to get Black Ops 2 on Steam.

          • Final Kill

BO2 is much easier to run than battlefield

          • BradyAlucard[sillibk]

            Yeah, probably.

    • RdJokr

“I don’t understand why it’s so hard for them to take the maps they already made and resell them on PS4.”

Here’s the thing. If you wanna bring back old maps, you can’t just “bring” them over that easily. Well, technically you can, but that’s basically just porting the old maps to work on the new game. Which basically means the maps would look outdated as fuck graphically compared to every other new map.

This is why you only get one remake map at a time. Even when the basic layouts of a map are there, the art team still has to make new high-quality textures, which could take up a lot of time. So unless it’s planned out ahead, it’s not going to happen.

Blundell already made a clear point, which is that selling everything as a bundle makes more money than selling everything separately. You could have about 500,000 players buying a Zombies collection, but you add MP and Campaign to it, and you attract even more players.

Plus, according to Treyarch’s analytics, everyone who plays their COD games spend time in all three game modes. So it makes more sense to cater to those people than just separate crowds.

      • Siftblade

Well apparently you can just bring them over, look at XB1’s backward compatibility options. Sure, they’ll look outdated, but it’s not like they ever looked that good to begin with, nor were graphics ever a main focus of the game. WAW zombies/mods is still super popular even though they look old as hell. Like I said, they can have the main team focus on BO3 with all the campaign, MP, and zombies to give general players a fresh, new experience. But for the people who are zombies fans, it shouldn’t take that much time or money to port the old maps over to PS4/XB1. It’d be best if Treyarch themselves port the game, but if they really need a different studio to do it, that could be fine as long as they do a decent job. I’d imagine they’d make huge profits off the collection. And yes, I am just adding that last part on the very off chance that someone from Activision is reading this and hopefully they can get something going, lol.

        • RdJokr

Backward compatibility is a different thing, because the games are limited just as they were when they were made for old consoles. But there’s a consistency in terms of graphics within the games. You can’t have a beautiful high-quality 1080p map here, and then an ancient low-quality 480p map next to it. That just comes off as incredibly lazy.

Anyway, knowing Activision, they would probably choose to go with the backward compatibility road, since that wouldn’t cost them as much time and money as having Treyarch, or another studio, to port the old maps. Plus, they can still continue selling the old games.

          • Siftblade

Ehh, either way I’m fine as long as they eventually bring the maps over to PS4, and I’d rather not have to buy every game separately again, so a bundle would be ideal. I just initially commented because it seemed like the interviewee was looking at things from the wrong perspective, so I just wanted to share how I saw it.

          • RdJokr

From a developer’s perspective, it makes more sense when you have bundled games like this. As I mentioned before, every COD player eventually may or may not try out everything the game has to offer. Because let’s face it, you spent $60 on a game, why wouldn’t you wanna try one part of the game you own at least for 15 minutes?

This potentially gets people who religiously play one mode to try out another mode, and increases the chance of gaining more fans for said modes. Selling a separate Zombies game wouldn’t work as much, because nowadays people still have a hard time accepting “Call of Duty” and “Zombies” together.

          • Siftblade

Lol I doubt that. The we’ve had 3 (soon to be 4) COD’s in recent years with zombies in them, and one with aliens in it. Plus, that’s not including COD: Online. Also, BO Zombies is still one of the top-selling mobile app. Pretty sure people can associate zombies with COD by now.

          • RdJokr

Tell that to the people that keep saying they only play multiplayer. I see a lot of those going around.

          • Siftblade

Just because they only play MP doesn’t mean they don’t recognize Zombies as a big part of COD.

          • Chrissssss

Exactly so put them together and ABBRAKADABBRA you get Black Ops III

          • The Adapted Warrior

I’m an MP guy but I still know zombies have been biggest part of COD in a while

          • RdJokr

True, but that’s the thing: people who only play MP has no reason to check out a Zombies-only game, unless you actually bundle them together.

          • BradyAlucard[sillibk]

If they were smart, they’d let a known third party (outside of Activision) and just let them work on it. It just needs to happen.

          • Final Kill

You can’t have a ‘480p’ or a ‘1080p’ map. It doesn’t work like that. Even if treyarch ports the maps with an older engine to Xbox 1 or ps4 they will still always run in 1080p. However, if they port it to the bo3 engine, the graphics will have the black ops 3 graphics and weapons if they decide to add them. Think of it like how treyarch ported WaW maps to black ops. They had the black ops graphics and they only ported a few of the WaW weapons to black ops.

          • RdJokr

WaW and Black Ops’ graphics were nearly identical. Plus, there were only four maps for them to port over. It’s a different case here.

And when I say “480p” and “1080p” I’m talking about texture quality, not actual resolution. You can’t just port the old maps over and expect them to automatically have better textures. That’s not how it works. You have to redo all the textures.

        • BradyAlucard[sillibk]

Then XB1 could just offer backwards compatibility.

Since they’d be ported to current gen, I’d rather them take time on the graphics, as well.

          • Siftblade

Well Activision would have to agree with backwards compatibility. Backwards compatibility means less money, which means that will probably never happen. Especially with the switch to PS now. A graphics boost would be nice, doesn’t matter to me too much though. I play it for the gameplay.

          • BradyAlucard[sillibk]

I agree. It’s not even native backwards compatibility. It’s a good thing that it’s free, though. They understand the basic criticisms gamers have over services like PS Now.

Anyway, even rehashing the maps and combining them all together into two separate collections would sell me easily. Imagine playing Black Ops 2 without having to buy all of the cosmetic microtransactions.

          • Michael Owen Caffrey

You dont have to buy cosmetic microtransactions
Its not a pay to won game you cant buy anything that makes you better then others
(except aw and avanced supply drops but thats besides the point)

          • BradyAlucard[sillibk]

Saying that I am not forced to buy it is redundant and cliche. That’s not the point. I still think that microtransactions should be unlockable.

      • BradyAlucard[sillibk]

Then they should start a completely new project to either remake all the maps, or remaster them. Halo: The Master Chief Collection actually only had 6 remade maps and the others weren’t touched, and only one game was significantly improved in graphical fidelity. They could do the same with a Modern Warfare & Black Ops Collection. It’d be nice, even if they did just rehash the maps (although I’d rather them scale the textures to be larger resolutions).

Yeah, it’d take quite a bit of time. A third party not owned by Activision could easily do it. And we have to consider the fact that Activision probably wouldn’t even want to fund the projects. How great would it be, though? Then we have to consider storage capacity and such. We can only dream.

        • Siftblade

          Yeah, maybe one day lol

          • BradyAlucard[sillibk]

It is definitely possible. Being realistic, however, is debatable. But it’d be nice.

    • BradyAlucard[sillibk]

I agree. But I don’t just want a Multiplayer collection. I’d want all the Zombies maps, too. IDK about the Campaign.

      • Siftblade

Well I just want a zombies collection really. If they do happen to throw on the MP with it, that’ll be nice even though i’ll probably end up paying more. Campaign doesn’t matter to me. (At least, not in the collection).

        • BradyAlucard[sillibk]

Ah, I didn’t quite understand your context, then. I’d like Zombies and MP to be packed into a Black Ops collection, and MP and other content for a Modern Warfare collection. It just sounds great.

Off topic; although I criticized TMCC significantly, I can’t argue (anymore) that it doesn’t have a lot of value at $60. Everything in the game is packed on the disc [for free], regardless of its large storage space. That’s something they did right, and now you can but the whole collection cheap. Just insane for Halo fans. I hope that they’d do the same for CoD. We can all dream.

    • MichiganerE

Uncharted 5? What about Uncharted 4?

      • Siftblade

        Whoops lol

        • BradyAlucard[sillibk]

          Honest mistake.

    • Eddie Tupy

isnt there going to be mod support? People will just port the maps over them selves as a custom, they wont be ranked probably but still.

      • Michael Owen Caffrey

I know for a fact mod support on the xbox one is for fallout 4 but that doesent say anything for other games though it is a posibility
And im sure if we can do it on xbox playstation wont have to wait to long for it as the guy presenting fallout at e3 said xbox finally let us and were working on playstation for mods now

        • Eddie Tupy

          im getting PC version bro…

    • That would cost money & time. Only a fraction of COD players really like Zombies. Even if thats half, your talking about making a 3 year cycle game for only half the community. thats a big loss from a company who can just do what they continue to do and make double that. At least now it is. They did just put out BO3 with only MP and Zombies (on past gen) so maybe down the line in like 2 or 3 more cycles, it isnt that far fetched.

      • Siftblade

They don’t have to replace the main game releasing in the 3 year cycle.

  • I don’t know how the replay ability of a standalone Zombies game would be. Once you beat the Campaign I’m sure they’ll have the Zombie maps like they always do, but what about the Multiplayer? I feel like that would be tricky. Regardless, I’m glad they keep it a gamemode within a Call of Duty game. Who knows, in the future we could see a full Zombies campaign within a Call of Duty that has a normal campaign and normal multiplayer. That would be fairly interesting and a better option in my opinion.

    • RdJokr

If the leaks from the beta are true, then we won’t have to wait long for that Zombies campaign 😉

      • Still not sure if I believe it just yet. It’d be nice though.

      • BradyAlucard[sillibk]

Yeah… that’s what I want to play the most. This’ll be a very fun CoD.

  • Daniel

Actually zombies is now bigger than both

    • QuickzZ-_-GhosT

Bigger than campaign ? Yea sure. But bigger than MP ? I m not so sure about that one.

    • GinsuVictim

There’s no way zombies is bigger than MP.

  • LovekillerX

I read an article saying Morg City is bigger than two campaign levels combined.

    • Drasadex

      oh yeah?

    • MichiganerE

      Link to article?

      • LovekillerX

I don’t have the link anymore but some guy got a chance to interview Jason Blundell.

    • RdJokr

If Blundell was talking about BO3’s campaign levels, then that would be fantastic.

      • LovekillerX

That would probably mean another Tranzit.

        • RdJokr

There’s no fog, so as long as riding the train in SOE isn’t mandatory, it won’t be.

          • BradyAlucard[sillibk]

That’s right… I forgot about that. Now that it’s a new generation, there won’t be much fog, and the view distance is increased. Wow.

          • LovekillerX

But how about… the lava…? *worried laughter*

          • RdJokr

Did you see any lava in the trailer? Because I didn’t.

          • LovekillerX

Me neither and that was actually meant as a joke. People might fall in love with “new Tranzit” (if it is the case) now that fog and lava is gone. I hope that double hitting zombies are gone…

          • RdJokr

Zombies seem to use new animations in this game, so I certainly hope they have newer attacks, and none of the double-slapping shit.

      • BradyAlucard[sillibk]

We say this every year, but this is going to be the best CoD in a very long time. That is just simply fantastic. I can’t critique the value for this game, it’s such a great thing. How this game is 60 FPS 1080p on the PS4 I’ll never understand. I’m just glad that we’re getting the game that we’re getting.

      • That could wind up making zombies very interesting. Imagine traditional zombies mechanics but with the wide open exploration-friendly world that Extinction had from Ghosts.

  • BradyAlucard[sillibk]

    I don’t play a Campaign to watch a movie…

I’d like a Zombies standalone game. They could easily incorporate it to all modes. It’s one of the biggest communities there is in the franchise.

    • MyKogInYourAshe

“One of the biggest communities” fuck the other people that don’ play zombies right?

      • GinsuVictim

It wouldn’t be aimed at those of us who don’t play zombies. It’s not like they would put out only a zombies game that year and have no actual Call of Duty. They should give ’em a zombies game sometime.

        • MyKogInYourAshe

I don’t really think that’s possible unless they have 2 seperate teams working on it

      • BradyAlucard[sillibk]

If it’s adapted into a Multiplayer setting, then it wouldn’t be problematic for those who don’t like it. Just because a Zombies standalone game would exist, it doesn’t mean it wouldn’t have a traditional Multiplayer mode. What if it were a faction or something? Gaming surrounds and defines itself in/through creativity. Any developer could make it work.

        • MyKogInYourAshe

But then it’s not really “standalone”

          • BradyAlucard[sillibk]

If they put Zombies in Multiplayer and made them act like the AI in Titanfall? Even then, the Zombies team could easily work on two different projects at once. There are many options.

  • The Flash

a zombie only game isnt really necessarily, people just want to play all the maps the same place and they want more maps. Now i dont get why at launch MP gets at least 10 maps, and Zombies turns up with only 2-3. Now SoE might be very big, but is that what everyone wants? Just one giant map with a load of stuff in? Or instead at least 5 Der Riese sized maps? As big as one map maybe, its the same map and same theme, so when we get SoE and the Giant, there isnt much variation. Giant is Der riese which we know already, then we have the new SoE but thats it. I also find it frustrating there is only 1 zombie map with DLC, as im essentially paying £12 for one map, im unlikely to play on the MP maps much.

    • BradyAlucard[sillibk]

Zombies maps are much bigger than Multiplayer maps.

      • The Flash

yeah cause Nuketown is bigger than Array

        • DEMOLITION12

nice comparison by picking the smallest map you could (that was already designed) spastic

          • The Flash

your right cause theres Shangri-La aswell and Nacht

    • DaRaginAsian

i assume zombies maps take much more time to make than mp maps, since zombies maps has a lot more in it, with music, characters, music, easter eggs, etc. i dont really expect more than one zombie maps every dlc pack, especially since dlc packs come out every 2-3 months, it probably takes that amount of time to make the mp + zombie maps

      • The Flash

That is true, but a lot of DLC maps are actually done way in advance but are not put in the base game and pushed back to DLC

  • Stefan Lang

Are they bringing back certain traps and such you could build from Bo2? I loved the Trample Steam and the Head Chopper it helped me to 50+ rounds on Buried.

    • DEMOLITION12

      buildables are retarded

  • Dangelo95

I understand this treyarch can make a full zombie experience while keeping SP and MP just as good all the game modes are now equal Zombies is part of the package by without a doubt it is its own game in a way

  • Ryumoau

I personally wouldn’t buy a standalone Zombie game because its my least favorite mode, so i’m glad its in the game as an extra mode to play if i need a break from multiplayer.

Besides i feel like Activision would just charge $60 for the standalone zombie thing while still only letting Treyarch put one or two zombie maps in it. So people would be paying more money for roughly the same content.

  • LovekillerX

What could it be (special announcement)?

    https://twitter.com/CallofDuty/status/654733413904089088

    • Ryumoau

I would like to see another new map alongside the new mode announcement. 🙂

      • LovekillerX

I wonder why the boss is in the house tomorrow…

    • Nicholas Tipps

      Maybe official new weapon announcement?

      • LovekillerX

I don’t think the boss would announce something that small. It has to be something more special… I guess we will find out tomorrow.

        • RdJokr

More Juggernog Editions? TBH, I can’t even guess why Mark would show up tomorrow.

  • As nice as a zombies standalone would be, it’s smarter from a business perspective to keep everything bundled together.
Give CoD fans a choice as opppsed to catering to one crowd and not another and you draw in a large player base. Simple as that.

  • Choppabro2psn

This makes perfect sense. Only thing is, if people want to play zombies alone, they have to pay 60$ for it.

  • Slash (SJS)

    Noooooo it’s all online!

  • Alex

Without doubt THE premier Call Of Duty developer.. The other 2 donkeys are amateurs

  • Choco Da Great

Zombie stand akone equals less sales in their primary cod game which includes sp and mp. To me it doesn’t really matter, im prolly going to play Zombies on bo3 for 3 years anyways untill treyarch release their next cod title. We could do with MORE Zombie maos though, it wouldn’t hurt to drop a special Zombie dlc map pack containing 8 additionial Zombie maps after the 4 regular packs have been released.

  • One Russian’s Revenge

“You know what would be nice, if after you beat the campaign they threw you into a zombies map, oh BO1, the memories.”

    • RdJokr

While that would definitely be rewarding for me, I can see a bunch of people whining about how they don’t want to play the campaign and all that.

      • One Russian’s Revenge

“You know, just to make it out of nowhere like they did in BO1, and if they choose to leave okay, but they have unlocked the map and whatnot..”

  • Eddie Tupy

they should maybe make as separate games Cod campaign, MP , and zombies/survival/extinction.
all cod campaigns on one disc/buy, mp on one, every third mode on one.

  • DeadZombieGaming 12

Does that mean we won’t be getting Black Ops 3 Multiplayer and Black Ops 3 Singleplayer in different steam games?

  • OMG its AliA

They are revealing a new game mode

  • Reaper00

They did make a zombie game called Dead Rush but it ended up getting canceled.

  • A standard Zombies game would be brilliant if it played differently and wasn’t just “spend hours collecting guns and doing easter eggs and lose it all in a second because your team is shite”

  • fuckoff

I hate them, the money greedy barstards I dont want to pay $120 for a game where I wont even care for the other two parts I only want zombies heres an Idea $50 bucks for a separate zombies game then people like me that hate the other crap can be happy
