NPD Group has released the numbers for both December 2015 results and the entire 2015, and Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 was #1 on both the lists. The NPD Group measures sales at retailers in the US only.

Activision provided the following statement regarding Call of Duty: Black Ops 3’s success. In the statement, Activision revealed that the Call of Duty franchise has sold over 250 million units life to date worldwide.

“Call of Duty: Black Ops III was the top selling title of 2015 globally by a wide-margin in both units and dollars sold-thru. This also marks the seventh year in a row that Call of Duty has been the #1 selling franchise in North America, according to NPD. In fact, Call of Duty has surpassed 250 million units sold life-to-date worldwide.  This achievement is thanks to the amazing experiences created by all of our development teams, and would not be possible without the  incredible passion from the Call of Duty community. We congratulate Treyarch on creating an incredibly engaging and an enormously fun game with Black Ops III and look forward to what’s to come in 2016,” said Rob Kostich, senior vice president and general manager, Call of Duty, Activision.

In terms of digital, Activision announced back in November following launch that Black Ops 3 broke digital sale records on the PlayStation Store.

Sony issued a statement earlier this evening that the PlayStation 4 console was the best selling console of December 2015 and of the year in the US.

“As we reflect on an amazing year, we want to thank fans and partners for making PlayStation 4 the top selling console in December and in 2015. PS4 also had the strongest third-party software sales in 2015 in the U.S., according to NPD.

The momentum and enthusiasm for the platform continued throughout the year, resulting in cumulative sales of more than 35.9 million since the launch of PS4. During the holiday season alone, more than 5.7 million PS4s and 35 million PS4 games were sold through to consumers worldwide. We look forward to another great year and bringing an extensive portfolio of games from our publisher partners and SCE Worldwide Studios to fans in 2016.”

  1. Wow, people really must have not liked the other 2 games. Quality CoD titles deserve success. I’m still iffy on paying extra money for the Hardened Edition, but man, did Treyarch deserve it with all that content.

    • what content, BO3 is a good game but it seems to have caught on with battlefront by having fuck all content (though not as bad as battlefront)

      • It has way more content then most other games! 8 hour campaign, Zombies (basically a game within its self), multiplayer, paint shop, gunsmith, character customisation, hundreds of achievement, camos, weapon variety, heaps of game modes

        • I love Zombies, but how is it a game in itself with just 1 fucking map on the base game, that is also too complex for randoms and casual players. Campaign kinda sucks to be honest, no links at all to the last 2 and just isn’t fun. MP has what 11 maps? and only 3/4 only get voted for in online matches. Nightmares is the campaign slightly re-skinned with a few zombies added. Very poor content for 3 years worth of development, and for zombies BO2 had more content.

          • People put hundreds of hours into Zombies, I would be very happy to get 100 hours out of an entire game

          • You still seem to have ignored everything I just said, SoE isn’t bad – but its the only map on the base game which isnt good enough for 3 years development, especially when they call it the biggest zombie experience ever.

          • I am bit salty as well about that, but I preordered the digital deluxe so I get 2 maps at launch so it’s not so bad. I can only hope we get better dlc content.

          • I did the same – though i regret it since at christmas they knocked £10 of it. The Giant should have been a launch map, and you got Nuketown, which I’ve not even played because they wont add it to map rotation yet, its in one playlist where you have to play loads of different modes where i only stick to 2/3. And we get a few bonus camos which quite frankly i think looked better on BO2, particularly the 115 one, thats a still image on BO3 compared to the BO2 one.

          • I can only imagine a lot of ideas were shelved for dlc, happens a lot in multiplayer and zombies.

          • wait till DLC you will be getting tons of free shit and also the pack but definitely free stuff since the amount of money people spend on CoD points and also last year’s ASD’s

          • well how was the m1 irons free then (they did give base version) plus you wouldn’t know that because they could have change in plans

          • lol the ‘free’ AW weapons were a joke, they starting putting them in the shitty supply drops and making you unlock a variant before the base gun was BS, essentially making you pay for supply drops to have much chance of getting one.

      • What? Lol, it has a shitload of content for a Shooter. The game is massive. Have you been smoking something?

        • 3arc said it will be the biggest zombie experience ever and called it its own game. Base game owners go into zombies menu, and see only 1 (mediocre) map…

    • Indeed. Campaign, multiplayer, zombies, Nightmares mode, Dead Ops and Free Run, including the fact that everything is connected with the Gunsmith and Paint-shop, all for $60.00? That’s one hell of a product.

      • Treyarch knew what they were doing. It’s as if they knew the fans would play it for 3 years, knowing the incapabilities of the other two developers. I got the Hardened Edition with the warranty for $90. I bitch about the Multiplayer and getting more bang-for-my-buck with all the bullshit online, but that’s just the heat of the moment. Zombies alone gives me and my loved ones enough playtime. I’ll be playing this game forever.

    • Hopefully IW has learned from their mistakes but I am seriously concerned about it. Especially if they call it Ghosts 2

      • Ghosts wasn’t bad but it was just an ugly game to me. The map designs and the shitty washed out colors. The stupid character customization. I hoestly think I could of made a better game

      • I’ll never lose faith in IW honestly. I didn’t play ghosts or a few call of dutys before or after that. But IW revolutionized CoD with CoD4, I’ve still got far more hours in that game than any other call of duty. In fact it is almost safe to say that they changed the industry completely.

As far as the next call of duty goes, I’d be ok for a remastered verison of the entire MW franchise, that would be pretty cool, but if they make a new game altogether, they should drop campaign mode altogether and focus their resources on multiplayer and zombies(or their equivalent anyways). That is just my opinion though, I’ve never gotten much out of the campaigns and they seem like a waste of resources to me.

    • Its IW, i doubt theyll be successful due to the BullShit they did with Ghosts. They need to stop making CoD. Period.

          • Is your opinion is that a company shouldn’t make a sequel to a massive financial success because that would be a bad business decision or because you just didn’t like it very much? either way you are a fool and have no place even having an opinion.

          • The success of the game is negligible. Look at star wars battlefront for example, it comes Down to the person’s opinion or enjoyment of a game , I don’t give a shit if people are buying it. IW has many incentives to make the next game, however I don’t see it doing well.

          • you ask for reference sources of my comments, there it is, a whole google page of stfu just for you. Then you cuss at me then complain when you read a cuss in a reply ? wow man, forget it and move along

          • No, wrong, the success of a game or any business commodity for that matter is purely financial, nothing more, nothing less, Ghosts sold over 20 million units and had a very successful DLC and micro transaction history. Yours or anyone else’s opinion of a game is unimportant and irrelevent in company deciding to make a sequel/follow up or not.

            This is simple economics,

    • Well I’m hyped for whatever IW are doing, unless it’s futuristic like AW or BO3, has SBMM and is eSports focused, then my heart will be crushed :'( But judging from their previous games, I have good feeling everything will be fine 🙂

    • Ehh, not really. People think BO3 is better than it actually is because how terrible AW and ghosts was. If Ghosts and AW were good games people would actually realize Black ops 3 is not as good as they think. 😛

  2. enough people are buying gta 5 that it still makes the list? wow, I know a lot of people ehave been buying it, but still, wow

        • I didn’t like it the first two weeks, but patches and DLC really made it one of the best. Too many people gave up too quickly and didn’t give it a chance.

          • Ghosts DLC was actually unique and amazing. Sure they had some ridiculous maps but at least they tried something new and IW sure knows how to design maps.

          • Siege was awful and Stonehaven was meh at best. I will agree on maps like Overlord, Octane, Freight, Stormfront and many more. IW’s map design seems to be more casual than what the new Treyarch & Sledgehammer produce, which I like. Although classic Treyarch maps are still amazing.

          • No matter how many patches or fixes that game received it could never be saved. Ghosts was fundamentally the worst Call Of Duty ever produced.

          • I did play AW and and your right, that is also one of the worst Call Of Duty’s along with Ghosts. Both these games got the core of what Call Of Duty is about utterly wrong.

Wasn’t particularly a fan of MW3 either but at least that COD got the make a or break fundamentals right. What are those you ask? Here:

            1. 3 lane map philosophy done properly with meaningful lines of sight, no oversized large random maps. We must be able to like we can control the map.

            2. Weapon balance with a decent variety of guns that purposefully encourage different playstyles. Whether it’s long range or CQB. No one gun should be more powerful than the rest like the ASM1.

            3. A less than instant TTK. (except for the snipers of course) Instant kill weapons ruin the game, almost every gun in Ghosts was instakill and in AW ASM1 was instakill along with the Bal and that’s why those where the only two guns used in that game. It flaws the point of having a variety of weapons because everyone is going to use the gun that kills instantly especially since all the other players in the game are also.

There is also no need for over the top random movement like in AWs Exo movement, ruined the game.

These are the fundamentals you can’t afford to fuck up otherwise that Call Of Duty will always be considered among the worst CODs, these problems are hard to patch or fix as it’s the core of the game, if you don’t these things right the first time that Call Of Duty is dead to me.

I just didn’t feel the need to mention and bash on a game that wasn’t even being talked about in the first place but there you go, you made me do it lol.

          • DLC was fine even tho i never bought the 3 and 4 plus I did still kind off enjoyed it, just seems that its not better than previous titles.

  3. Sold by a large margin then go on to quote global brand to date figures….. fucking marketing bullshit. If its such a success then publish actual sales figures and put player numbers back in the game instead of hiding behind how popular the game USED to be

    • It’s not even close to best Cod ever, it’s step In the right direction.. The first playable cod that will last me the year, for that I will be forever Greatful, bo3 for sure saved the series and is the best Cod on current gen consoles.. Iw can easily take that crown next year tho..

      • I hope IW took a lesson from ghosts, they have the formula to make a cod even better than bo3 and i believe they can, they just need to see their past (cod4,mw2,mw3).

        • Yh, the chances are if it’s ghosts two it will have to be boots on ground, to carry on with the story… That alone will help it topple bo3..

And if it is boots on ground, map design doesn’t have to be altered to fit in with any crazy movement, we can go back to having a bunch of memorable maps..

Score streak values might be lower and the score streaks themselves might be more powerful, due to not having to compensate for specialist weapons and abilities..

All In all, like u said if they learn lessons from ghosts, could be on to a winner.. That would be something to witness one of the most hated Cods Turing into one of the most loved with its sequel..

          • This man gets it. Return of boots on the ground, specialist package (maybe some new streak system too?) and good map design and gun variety will probably bring us the best Call of Duty on current gen. Also return to pointstreak system allows me to get killstreaks too (UAV 500 score..?)

^ If they learn from their mistakes (see Ghosts maps on disc versus DLC for example).

          • Yh, it’s a shame not many people see this..

“if it’s called ghosts 2 then it’s going to be shit” is what I keep seeing.. Some of the worst logic I’ve seen.. Really hope they get proved wrong..

          • Yeah, Pointstreaks is a nice a balance of earning rewards by playing both OBJ and by getting kills. Best of both worlds.

          • I agree, idk wth was going on over there, a lot of goofy dlc and stuff arose. Anyone remember the snoop dog announcer dlc, lol. ???

          • I would fire the guy who put i.e.ds in tha game and the guy(s) who made the map layouts. these guys should never take part in a cod development ever again.

      • I am actually thoroughly enjoying bo3 on all fronts, however I don’t really agree with your belief. I have played a lot of IW games, and they aren’t really that different from each other, it may be an unpopular opinion, but I lost interest at mw3. I think people are blinded by nostalgia, sure.mw2 was fun and great and many people’s first cod, but it was full of problems, and too simple and bland. Sure, boots on the ground would be nice, but they better do it right. Add some flavor to the basic combat we love.

        • I rate mw3 higher than bo3… Boots on ground makes cod what it is.. It was advanced warfares major problem.. And now look at bo3 maps.. They have all had to take movement into consideration and make sure the maps suit the new movment, and it simply hasn’t worked out all that well, where are all the memorable maps? Combine? That’s what we have After 3 years? Why spend so much time on movment when all we should do is be able to walk..

The faster movment takes away from strategic plays, and it’s just rushing.. In my experience..

Cod got better and better every year before they Starred to change things.. Bo2 is still the greatest multilplayer experience in my opinion..

Saying all this I’m not taking anything away from bo3 I enjoy it, il buy the map packs and play it till the end..

          • MW3 is still my favorite Call of Duty game and I’m waiting that some Call of Duty will topple MW3. Sure Black Ops 3 is fun but boots on ground, specialist killstreaks, AC130 (and overall killstreaks), map design and 40+ weapons… man that is difficult to topple IMO.

          • MW3 Specialist was just such a perfect addition to the franchise. Ghosts Specialist sucked because they balanced it out.

          • Yeah MW3 Specialist made you unstoppable supersoldier but in Ghosts it didn’t feel so good and strong.

          • It was a bit op don’t you think? you guys are also forgetting support streaks in mw3, those were awful, as well as death streaks. Specialists was a cool idea, they should add unique perks for specialist and fine tune them, give it some variety and better applicability.

          • Not really since you had to get the kills with your soldier, rather than with killstreaks. Only thing OP was the SitRep Pro Post-Patch, but apart from that, MW3 Specialist was perfect.

          • That’s literally all they would have to do to please everyone I reckon.. That plus bring in the diamond camo challengers.. And maybe at a bit of cosmetic customisation like bo3 boom.. Perfect cod..

          • Yeah, bo3 is missing the high power killstreaks.

Another mw2 like game would be great, I just worry because the IW titles are too bland , and repetitive for me, don’t get me wrong, I don’t want 3d movement back, I just never caught onto the pacing like the the black ops titles. If IW can nail that, they have my seal of approval.

          • I find the movement system makes the game enjoyable, but I don’t want it returning again. I find it to be strategic, wall running to flank, jumping, sliding using routes, to stay outside of an enemies field of vision , etc, can be just as rewarding as boots on the ground. What I like about bo3 is you get the best of both worlds, cover to cover on the ground and some cool plays with the movement.

            — COD is simple, only so much can be fit into that formula. I only hope for some variation, as I said before ,IW titles bring nothing fresh to the table, same gun play, and maps. The best chance they have is a title similar to mw2, cause I still enjoy that game.
