When Activision announced Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered, they also announced that Raven Software would be leading development of the title, with assistance from Infinity Ward.

Infinity Ward’s studio head, Dave Stohl, revealed to Forbes that the decision to hand it off to another studio came because they did not have enough resources to dedicate to making a remaster alongside Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare.

“Part of it is a resource thing. As you bring the old game over to new tech,” Stohl says, “you want to make sure you don’t lose the feel, the vibe, the look even though you’re using all this modern technology with physically based rendering pipelines and stuff like that. So the game’s gonna look terrific, but you want to make sure you don’t lose that vibe or that feel of the original game.”

Infinity Ward and Raven Software have worked together in the past, on Call of Duty: Ghosts and Modern Warfare 3, so they were excited to collaborate again on this together.

Raven Software’s Studio Director David Pellas spoke with Forbes about some of the ways they are improving the title to look great on current-gen consoles. While making these updates, Pellas reiterated the fact that, while they are updating the graphics, they are being very careful to not adjust or alter the core gameplay of Call of Duty 4.

“So what we did for multiplayer, for example, is we worked on the map Overgrown and we used that as our beautiful corner, our proof of concept of what we’re aspiring to get,” says Pellas. “And we worked on the foliage, we worked on the grass, we worked on the wind, the sky, the buildings, the textures. So much love went into crafting Overgrown and making it just an amazing experience, amazing visuals, that we then used that as kind of our temperature gauge on the other maps that we were working on.”

“Our directive at the beginning, and we believe this to be an important aspect of the remaster, is to remain true to the tenets that made modern warfare the game we all remember it to be. So we’re not looking to reinvent the wheel, we’re really trying to stay true to that game experience.”

Pellas described in detail some specific updates they look for to bring to the maps; specifically, they are working on bringing more attention to details on maps, which the 2007 original release did not have because of old technology at the time:

“Things like clouds moving over and being able to have that shadow of the cloud as it moves over the sun, is just a really impressive thing to see. The dynamics of the water effects as you’re splashing through the ravine in Overgrown, for example, is another one of those features that we wouldn’t have been able to do seven years ago, but the new generation of hardware pulls it off without a hitch.

“So there’s a lot of little things like that added to it,” he continues, “just to add a sense of realism and give you a real presence within the world that, as good as the first one was, these little tweaks just take it to another level.”

Raven Software was asked by Activision if they wanted to make the Mastered, and Pellas said there was no hesitation from the team: they wanted to do it.

“When this came across our desk as an opportunity, we leapt at it,” Pellas says. “There was no question. This product would not have been possible without the fans asking for it,” he adds. “We’ve seen petitions online. Activision really did listen, and this is the fruit of that labor. So very much this is a community project, and we’re just really proud to be able to bring it to [fans.]”

Raven Software’s Studio Head, Brian Raffel, stated that their goal was to make sure that they honor the legacy of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare in making the remastered. They did not want to alter what made that title great in the first place.

“We wanted to make sure we hit every note as far as audio and the visual quality, and texture density, the visual effects so the whole experience was true to the original, but amplified in a way that was showing the next-generation quality.”

“Our goal is to make the fans happy that we were respectful to the original and did it honor,” Raffel says. “That’s really what’s important to us. Or to me at least.”

Raven Software has been working on Call of Duty since Call of Duty: Black Ops 1, where they made DLC for that title; they also worked on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3’s DLC season, and Call of Duty: Ghosts, Advanced Warfare, and Black Ops 3. The team also developed Call of Duty Online, the free to play title, available only in China.

Well they’ve definitely made me happy. Can’t wait to see COD4 come to life again 🙂

    • Scotty K

so don’t bitch when you get knifed from 50 feet away

      • Eric H

        what

      • CoDforever

        thats mw2

        • BradyAlucard[sillibk]

CoD4 had a pretty decent lunge.

      • jordanxbrookes

Yes because Commando was in COD4. I can tell you’ve never played it before because you would know how close you have to be to knife someone in that game.

        • BradyAlucard[sillibk]

Knife lunge was pretty decent in CoD4.

          • jordanxbrookes

Exactly, it was pretty much perfect.

          • BradyAlucard[sillibk]

It was a bit long tbh. Bullshit in some cases. Which is why I like 2-hit melee.

      • Ak74u

        Wrong game

  • ‎ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤ

My only wish is that they’ll release mod tools for PC, and we can have a new era of Promod on CoD4 remastered. Y’know, for nostalgic purposes only 🙂

    • CoDforever

how is your name like that?

  • Digital_Veil_

Hoping they at least address some of the balance issues in that game. I don’t mind Stopping Power but I definitely wouldn’t be opposed to adjusting things like Martyrdom and Last Stand.

    • Eric H

Have stopping power built into the game, take away the perk. Ditch marty and last stand, no frag x3, take stun x3 down to x2, buff shit guns and bam perfection.

  • Rager6amer

Wait, raven made the bo3 dlc? No wonder it was so sh*t in comparison to bo2 and other games lol xD

    • Eric H

      “lol xD”

    • BradyAlucard[sillibk]

Raven is actually a great studio, they’ve made pretty much all of the beloved maps, unless Keshav wants to prove me wrong.

      • Keshav Bhat

I cannot really say yes or not too that; Activision doesn’t really say what studio makes what in a lot of scenarios

        • BradyAlucard[sillibk]

I thought they made some of MW2’s maps like Highrise, or did they just make the DLC?

    • Keshav Bhat

No, they are not working on #BlackOps3 DLC. They made Redwood MP in black ops 3; they didn’t say anything else.

      • Rager6amer

yeah excuse me man i misread what they said but either way they worked on redwood, a.k.a the worst map in bo3 (or one of the worst)

        • “worked on” doesn’t mean they created it.

          • Rager6amer

but they did create redwood lol.

          • BradyAlucard[sillibk]

They just worked on it. Treyarch created it, too.

  • TheGamerBeast

fingers crossed Raven Software did alot of great stuff.. after reading this.. am so excited so see real 1080p 60fps Gameplay from MP as well omfg

    • BradyAlucard[sillibk]

Current gen will be able to do that, which I’m glad about.

  • Eric H

Ok guys, time to get rid of Infinity Ward and replace them with Raven! They seem to have their heads on right!

    • Untill Raven make a ghosts 2.

      • BradyAlucard[sillibk]

Ghosts wasn’t Raven’s fault, they just helped. Rubin was the executive producer of that game.

        • ik ik, it was just a joke

          • BradyAlucard[sillibk]

Ah, thought so lol, just had to chime in.

  • Dangelo95

I’m taking their word for it that it’s keeping that classic Cod 4 feel with just a prettier appearance and no more hacks that sounds amazing

  • BradyAlucard[sillibk]

Let’s see DICE bitch about this, since their games use similar effects.

    • DICE may make better looking games, but the gameplay feeling in CoD is way better

      • BradyAlucard[sillibk]

They just push visuals too much, that’s the problem. There’s no gameplay quality there. Their games don’t even look that much better, so why talk shit? They use similar effects, they just have a better graphics engine. It’s not like they make good games anymore. Battlefront is awful.

        • ToonToons22

Battlefront was one of those games that looked great, but was really just half a game. No single player campaign like the old Battlefront because they focused too much on graphics and multiplayer and nothing more.

Call of Duty, on the other hand, has a great balance of good graphics and multiple modes to choose from, not just multiplayer and a survival mode with horrifically stupid AI enemies.

          • BradyAlucard[sillibk]

Not even the Multiplayer was very in-depth. NO game should ever not provide a decent Singleplayer experience. No space battles and over half of the content of the first two Battlefront games. CoD is smoother and more fun.

          • Even Angry Joe had admitted that CoD has way more content than Battlefront, and yet DICE still has the balls to talk shit about IW?

          • BradyAlucard[sillibk]

Calling it a game from 2010, that’s just hilarious, especially since they aren’t even genuine developers.

  • CoDforever

Raven Software is an extremely underrated talented studio.

I wish they replace Sledgehammer as part of the 3-year-cycle

    • BradyAlucard[sillibk]

Same here. They’re great. Didn’t they make all of the best maps? CoD Online seems great. Although they probably messed Ghosts up, it’s really not their fault.

      • CoDforever

They worked on the co-op modes before (Extinction and Exo-zombies)

        • BradyAlucard[sillibk]

They’ve been helping out with CoD for a long time. At least since MW2, if not even before that.

          • CoDforever

probably just spec ops and other co-op modes lol

          • BradyAlucard[sillibk]

Nope, I’ve heard that they’ve made MW2 maps lol.

    • SoulTaker

Why not just put them in the cycle that way we get a 4 year cycle ??? Saying to replace sledgehammer is a bit harsh a lot of those guys would lose their jobs.

      • CoDforever

Sledgehammer could take Raven’s position as a support studio.

I really dont think COD needs more than 3 years to make a game, they made amazing ones in only 2

        • SoulTaker

Imagine what they could do with am extra hear though ?

          • Kermit the Drug Addict

            I’d like that…

          • CoDforever

Yeah, I could only imagine how much more advanced movement they could add to the game.

          • SoulTaker

I was thinking more supply drop content. 😉

        • [UnFK4Ever] PHiiLZ

          yeah i agree

      • [UnFK4Ever] PHiiLZ

seems to me that Raven is a support studio, when the main team dont have the time or the resourses to develope the game, they call Raven to do that

    • waylay3r

you love hammering sledge, dont you ? 😛 They actually listened to the community when they wanted innovation and took the risk , even tho it turned out people didnt like it. They provided a great campaign with some of the most revolutionary cutscenes i have seen. And even if MP didnt play out as good as we expected , the ideas behind the whole concept were pretty interesting and innovative. Exos, direct energy weapons, 3Dammo printing weapons all of them pretty interesting ideas

      • ScOott

That amazing studio that refused to listen to the majority of fans and remove sbmm?

        Great studio..

        • waylay3r

didnt say anyway they are “amazing” . I just saying they dont deserve such hate

          • BradyAlucard[sillibk]

They don’t deserve HATE, but they deserve huge amounts of criticism for not doing what the community asks. I know we don’t dictate anything, but we deserve to get our $60 worth as consumers. They should be ashamed.

          • waylay3r

The 2 really bad things they did were sbmm and supply drops. About the second one i dont know, maybe it was activisions fault, but apparently the first one is theirs. People hated sbmm aparently, i didnt mind it so much cause i am used to the a harder matchmaking system which is the dotas one. But yeah , if the majority of the people hated it they should have changed it. Every studio makes mistakes. Treyarch as an example is known for the bad netcode and lag comp bs, which is way more fundamental in the way you play the game.

          • ScOott

Lol fair enough they do deserve it tho not for the game they made, but for the fact they wouldnt even slightly budge on sbmm in pubs, plus the fact the game was un playable for the first few months..

Heck I had a bug that gave me the royalty camo just like that, taking away half the grind.. Not to mention all the planfull out of map exploits.. It was a complete mess..

I could forgive the game breaking bugs but ignoring the community like that was just the nail in the coffin.. I would much prefer Raven take over..

          • Mario Rivera

It was more than just the SBMM tho, They were incompetent and stubborn in lots of different ways. That game wasn’t crafted for the fans, it was crafted for their agenda.

        • It’s so funny to the point that’s its a meme that people say adding nothing but weapons locked behind SDs is
          ” support “.

Atleast they’re giving some weapons out now for free.

        • RdJokr

Here we go again with the SBMM topic…

The problem with the matchmaking in AW is that it wasn’t an intended feature at all. Black Ops III suffered a similar situation on consoles last Christmas, and Vahn immediately stated it was a bug within the hotfix, and they rolled it back. Another Treyarch dev spoke on how SBMM actually works in COD games, and it is nothing like what people are labeling “SBMM” in AW.

The matchmaking in AW was fucked to an extent, yes, but I believe it boils down to it being a bug that they never found a solution to. Why that is, I don’t know.

        • Rorke File

          I hope COD4 doesn’t have SBMM.

        • CraziBoi94

Or refused to fix the majority of anything? Yeah, remember it crystal damn clear. That multiplayer was the definition of trash.

        • heheh fgt scooot u will never see this heheheeh

      • BradyAlucard[sillibk]

They didn’t listen to anyone, that’s all PR.

      • I don’t understand that mentality that ” the game is good, it’s concept is good even though it was fucking horrible to play “.

BO3’s singleplayer had a tremendous concept with absolutely incredible world building, but that doesn’t matter when it’s thrown away due to its awful delivery.

        • waylay3r

well good thing you dont understand that cause i never said “it was fucking horrible to play” . My exact quote is” it turned out people didnt like it”. i had my fair share of fun form AW, maybe not as much as older games , but still had some

          • I never said you did?

I used that quote as a general consensus of the communities feelings.

      • Mick

Are you kidding me? I hope this comment was a troll. Tell me a time where they listened to the community ONCE? They refused to listen to the hardcore fan-base. And, as ScOott said, they didn’t even remove SBMM when we all complained about it. Sure, exos were something different, but what do you expect from people jumping 20 fucking feet in the air? It was retarded.

        • Dickmissle

It wasn’t that bad I didn’t like but there is a bit to much hate they rolled the dice but I guess that was bad but there is to much hate at this point it’s just to look cool

    • Rorke File

Sledghammer was responsible for the MW3 multiplayer, I enjoyed that one.

  • CoDforever

In other news, the cod IW trailer officially has more dislikes than likes ..

I fucking hate battlefield fanboys ..

    • BradyAlucard[sillibk]

Did you see the bullshit that DICE devs spewed about it? Calling it a game “from 2010”? Fucking pathetic.

      • CoDforever

yeah lol those tweets were proof that they were soooo salty

        • BradyAlucard[sillibk]

It’s funny because they’re wrong, too. They don’t even have access to the game code, nor were they even real developers. Weren’t they just video editors or some shit? So salty lmao.

      • DICE is just salty that the next cod titles (IW and MW remaster) are actually going to be decent. We don’t fully know about IW just yet, but the remaster is no doubt going to be amazing.

        • BradyAlucard[sillibk]

They have no right to bitch, especially since Battlefront was so shit.

          • Kermit the Drug Addict

Agreed. What does the look of the game matter if it’s quality can’t match it?

          • It was a Video & Media Editor at DICE.
            On twitter:
[…] “precious 2010 graphics and grade school editing.”

I think he deleted his tweets and apologized.

          • BradyAlucard[sillibk]

            That’s a good point.

        • BradyAlucard[sillibk]

          (They’re just graphics whores)

      • SoulTaker

To be honest Crysis 1 on the PC in 1080p ultra settings looks almost just as good, but COD has never really been about graphics. Some people are just more into graphics sadly.

        • BradyAlucard[sillibk]

Actually, CoD looks pretty amazing this generation, especially Advanced Warfare and Black Ops 3. I don’t think Crysis looks even remotely as good, but CryEngine is definitely one of the best graphics engines out there. Shame that that’s all those games are.

          • CoDforever

You can seamlessly enter space from earth in Infinite warfare. No shit its gonna have a toll on the graphics.

          • BradyAlucard[sillibk]

It still looks great. Why didn’t they comment on AW and BO3? Because they’re idiots who only talk shit about everything that suits their narrative.

          • SoulTaker

In my opinion A.W still has the best graphics to date this generation when it comes to COD.

          • BradyAlucard[sillibk]

BO3 looks better, that’s a technical fact, and maybe even Infinite Warfare looks better than both. Which is why what the DICE devs said was bullshit; CoD improves on itself every year.

      • waylay3r

I was actually triggered so much by what D.I.C.E devs said. I am a big BF fan as well and its pathetic to see such unprofessional responces. Shoutout to the BF subreddit who mentioned this and discredeted the dice devs for saying such things.

      • ”Friendly competition” my ass. Let’s see them admit that this year’s CoD outsold their realistic military shooter.

        • BradyAlucard[sillibk]

They’re just salty, and gamers actually believe that they’re just “taking the piss”. I call bullshit.

    • Do you know what I hate more than battlefield fanboys? CSGO fanboys who call the game the same shit every year when they have been playing the same Dust II map since 1999. Everyone calls it a recycled game. New guns, new maps, new story… Yep! Totally recycled! Then every similarity with the past game they say its a copy and paste. If it wasn’t similar to the last game then it wouldn’t be a series.

      • BradyAlucard[sillibk]

OOH DAMN. Fazal went there! I fully agree. CSGO is the most overrated game I’ve ever seen.

      • CoDforever

“where they all say they fucked your mum.”

Whenever people say that its proof that its just them trying to join the cod hate bandwagon. That statement is factually untrue because everyone is in party chat

        • For some reason when anyone wants to compare a game or hate on a game, it’s always CoD. Maybe because CoD is the better game and their trying to prove something?

    • Wraith

Tfw when half those dislikes come from CoD players mad about the future setting. On a side note, everyone shitting on Battlefield in the comments and “looking good even though the game is shit.” Cmon let’s be a little more professional you sound just like DICE in their IW response. Millions of people play BF but that doesn’t mean they have shit taste. Their taste is just different than yours wtf is happening in these comments.

    • Rorke File

There are also COD fans that disliked and don’t love the direction COD is heading. Three futuristic games after each other isn’t also a smart move of Activision.

    • [UnFK4Ever] PHiiLZ

actually cod fans, i could i say, haters, hate on their own game, is this every year, i cant understand this

  • GinsuVictim

They say that as though cloud shadows didn’t already exist last gen…

    • BradyAlucard[sillibk]

They didn’t all that much. Standard definition made it look terrible.

  • Eric Anthony

Great! Now, can they remaster MW2 now? All they have to do is:

    1. Keep in Danger Close perk, but remove the effect for the noob tubes. I actually used Danger Close for better splash damage while in my streaks

    2. Keep Commando Pro, but get rid of the completely asinine knife lunge. Let it only deminish fall damage, & maybe replace the knife lunge with a non annoying, op ability.

    3. Fix all the annoying invisible barriers from all the clutter scattered across the maps. Every time I play an Infinityward game, I always get stuck on objects which in turn, ruins the flow/killstreak.

    4. Maybe make some of the weapons that were completely useless a lil, tiny buff. Nothing too crazy though

    5. Remove the ability to recharge your noovtube stock with One Man Army. OMA, can stay in the game as long as it doesn’t let you regain noobtubes…

    6. Don’t change how Scavenger works with explosives. I see a lot of people complain about the ability to recharge your tactical & lethal slots, which is completely fine IMO.

    7. Add MW3’s Specialist Bonus?? Would love to see it in MW2…

    8. Add more color to the game. Let’s be honest, MW2 has a little color but it’s mostly brown, grey, & green just like MW3. (MW3 is more intense on the darker colors though)

    9. Please don’t nerf the Killstreaks. They’re completely fine as is…

    Thoughts, opinions?

    • BradyAlucard[sillibk]

It doesn’t seem like Raven’s actually even changing anything. I hope they do, but it’s unlikely until further information is released.

    • Jesus Peralta

Stay true to MW2, so I disagree with your #4 (guns were all good), 7, 8

      • Eric Anthony

So then what’s the point of a remaster if you’re not gonna fix all the broken things? Obviously, you gotta change something. If not, they mine as well give us the backwards compatible version…

        • Jesus Peralta

All guns were useful, thats one of the most memorable things about MW2 – all guns were good. It’s a remaster, not a remake, adding more colour would defeat Infinity Ward’s style. They’re not colourful and cheesy like Treyarch, bud.

    • Wraith

Points 1 and 9 tell me you really love the crazy splash damage on kill streaks. Too much could go wrong with nerfing killstreaks directly, so I’d opt to make killstreak kills not count towards your next streak. Your chopper gunner can still go ham, but you’ll need 11 gun kills to get it. Can’t have people getting predator missiles and 15 seconds later getting a chopper.

  • Vittorio D’Antuono

These news sound great. I’m just curious to see how the Multiplayer will really be, like if it’s exactly as it was on the original game, e.g. 10XP points per kill most modes, just three standard killstreaks, same game modes etc …
Also if the mechanics are exactly the same: in latest Cod titles, the aiming and the tossing of stun / frag grenades is much quicker, will be interesting to know whether they did improve that aspect or left it just they way it was. Either way I’m going to love it.
Also, I hope they’ll be adding the 6 missing MP maps overtime through DLCs.
From their description, it sounds like this Cod4 Remaster, the one we’ve been asking for ages now, will really perform beautifully.
The very same game at its core, but with heavily revamped graphics / visual effects and sound, all updated to 2016. There couldn’t be anything better than this 🙂

  • Scott

So in 2017 I would assume we will get a MW2 or BO2 remaster. Hopefully Raven studios can do it.

    • COD 2017 could be MW3 remastered since SHG worked on it

      • Wraith

They might just start going in order, from MW1 to BO1. And who knows maybe by then everyone will be praising Ghosts for unknown reasons and we’ll get that after BO2 remastered.

        • I’d do

          2017 – MW3
          2018 – WaW
          2019 – MW2
          2020 – BO1
          2021 – BO2

Though honestly by 2021, we’d probably be on the next generation…PS5 and Xbox 2? Lol. I’m not even sure if CoD has that much life left in it to go on for 5 more years.
I think by the time we get to the next generation, Activision should just release remasters at that point instead of working on a new CoD. Release those + CoD online and put the series to rest. Shift Treyarch, Infinity Ward, Sledgehammer Games, and Raven Software to work on other, potentially more profitable, IPs.

“Raven Software has been working on Call of Duty since Call of Duty: Black Ops 1, where they made DLC for that title;”

^ My favorite DLC maps in the entire series… 🙂

Raven should be the 4th studio to make CoD

first of, sorry for my low english, i’m learning new
i was wondering netcodes and matchmaking system (remasterd online). I live in Turkey and we have 2 seconds lag every online game since advanced warfare because of terrible netcodes and unfair matchmaking. No problem with old games or other games. Last week i played mw and mw2 on ps3, server netcodes/hitmarkers is amazing. Zero lag , everything is perfect about connection. So please dont touch the netcodes and matchmaking in mw remasterd. We cant play new call of duty games cause lag situation, mw remasterd is our last hope

Someone started a petition to have cod 4 be sold separately

I am so psyched for the MW remaster, like most people it was my first online CoD back in 07 and even though the series has changed quite a lot due to demand, I will be on it recking heads with my M16 with red dot and red tiger.. Roll on November!

Question: Is the PC version going to be true to the old PC version, ie rentable ranked/mod servers with mod tools etc ?
If not ?, then it will just be a parody of the original cod4, albeit a good looking parody.

So does that mean 3x grenade, Last Stand, Juggernaut, Martyrdom will still be in the game? Will grip & the grenade launcher will remove perk 1 from the player? Will there be only 2 attachments per weapon in the game? Will claymores, RPGs, & C4 be a perk? Nostalgia is going to be a bitch for a lot of people.

First of all, English is not my native language, so I apologize for any mistake

The purpose I’m writing this is because I fear that the developers will change the unique and good things that call of duty 4 MP had. All of this is IMO and I know a lot of COD4 players that loved the things I don’t want to be changed. I would like that the developers leave the game mechanics as it was before. Please do not change the map design, leave the map exploits and small glitches for the player to have advantage positions or shortcuts in the map, like for example that you could climb on almost every roof in Ambush map, the mattresses and soft spots where you could jump on without receiving falling damage, the old school invisible ledges, special parts in the map where you could use it as a hiding spot by doing a small glitch or jumping through various objects to get where you want to go. Leave the maps exactly as they were. Also like I mentioned before, don’t change the mechanics of the game, like for example, the unique and strategic prefire and prenade spots. Please “DON’T” put penalty for throwing the grenades early when the game start!!!, leave the bullet/wall penetration as it was, do not put invisible wall everywhere, leave the maps exactly as they were. Also I would like to see the option to manage both the game volume and music volume.
