Raven Software has been working with Infinity Ward on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered since early last year, David Pellas, Raven Studio Direction, confirmed.

I believe, it was early last year. I don’t want to say the wrong month, but it was definitely early last year.

This time was one of Raven’s first as the lead studio on a Call of Duty game that launches worldwide. The team is lead right now on China’s Call of Duty Online game.

Being the lead studio, it is a very special feeling that you are either going to be your own worst enemy or best friend. But it also allowed us to understand how important a partnership is.

Pellas said Raven Software has formed a great partnership with the team at Infinity Ward. They have been collaborating since Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.

He said that Raven Software always was going to add the additional 6 maps, but there were 100% committed to the 10 maps at first, which is why the game was announced that way back in May. Raven wanted to make sure their visual bar was set and that they could achieve that regardless of the time available, since they had to ship this day and date with Infinite Warfare.

It was always the intention. So what happened when we first started on this project, one of the first thing we had to do was establish the visual bar that we were going to hit for this remaster. The team really did a deep dive and were able to achieve that. We quickly realized that we didn’t have enough time to do all 16 maps. So we worked with our partners at Activision and we determined that we were confident that we could get the 10 maps done at the bar we wanted in that time frame, and we decided that that was what we were gonna focus on, but we had always planned on shipping the additional maps.

It has also been announced that Certain Affinity and Beenox are working with Raven Software on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered. Both Certain Affinity and Beenox have been involved in Call of Duty for a while now, helping in ways that are not always announced. Infinity Ward also has the executive role of just seeing what’s happening in the development process and providing feedback on the development, but he confirmed that IW is not directly developing MWR since they are focused on Infinite Warfare.

The development has been a combination of Raven, Beenox, and Certain Affinity. And Infinity Ward is a fantastic partner, but they weren’t developing the game (MWR) itself. They know what the box is better than anyone else. And the best way to think of [Infinity Ward’s] involvement is there are always there…their finger is always there…they also trust us.

It took a lot of work. You’re talking about every single one of the campaign missions and multiplayer. Given that it was a little over a year, year-half development total, we needed support there. Beenox has been an active member working on CoDs for a while now, and Certain Affinity is certainly no slouch, they’ve been around for a while working on CoD too. We knew having them help us was only going to help us get to the finish line faster, which is what we’re trying to do in the time period we had. In all ways, we’re the lead studio and setting and defining that [visual bar] and moving that forward. We want to give them good direction. That’s why they’re in joining the panel. They are active members. We would never want to take any kinda thunder away from their involvement. They’re great partners.

Pellas also reiterated the fact that making Call of Duty games in the time constraints they have is not an easy task, and the more help they have the better it becomes.

We are not a one man show. There are no studios that does it by themselves. There’s definitely a lead studio. There’s just a realization that Call of Duty is so big and the content that we make takes so much time that we need collaboration, we need good partnerships. We are very fortunate that we all get along.

We’ve actually just and still are the lead studio on Call of Duty Online. And we learned a lot there. We also learned a lot through the years working with partner studios. We know that what we didn’t like, and we know what we did like.

We also asked a question about how they adjusted their development to match the 30 days early access to the campaign that PlayStation 4 players can get. He responded with the fact that Raven knew since the start of development that the incentive would exist, so they had planned around it.

I mean, yeah, obviously, 30 days [posed a constraint]. But, no. Cause we knew that our partnership with PlayStation was going to continue from last year, so we knew that one of the incentives was going to be that 30 day. So we had planned for it from the beginning. It’s also one of the reasons why we made the decision to have more partners involved in it. We wanted to make sure it was rock solid.

Raven Software needs to remaster the whole MW series! I’d be thankful for it!

  • lunator100hd .

I dont trust them, i believe this guys was what went wrong with ghosts and i have a bad feeling about this too.

    • ccrows

IMHO these guys did a solid job making MW3’s DLC maps.

I’m looking forward to seeing their work in COD4R… πŸ™‚

      • ScOott

Yoooo, does CoD4 support split screen? I didn’t join multiplayer till bo1

        • Element115Will

It was 4 player split screen. Itll probably still be the same. I also didnt start playing multiplayer fully until BO1 came out! Good times though.

          • ScOott

            Thanks for the reply dude..

    • Batman

      WHAT?
With ghosts even more of the IW staff had left and they had less than 2 years to develop on 6 consoles/PC(2 of those didnt even had their specs confirmed at the time) and the new IW staff was totally unexperienced
Raven didnt have anything to do w/ it, they followed what the lead developer IW told them to do

  • Wizga

Raven should actually be the team who creates the new engine for COD. I mean come on people, IW engine is really getting old, graphics are outdated.

    • ccrows

I would love to have Raven replace either (current) IW, or SH.

Not wanting to see people fired, just switch roles that’s all…

      • PuddleOfStix

I was originally an I-Dub fan-boy. But hot damn, they have become the worst developer of a series they created. Seems all of their talent went off to Respawn somewhere else…

      • Mario Rivera

Replace IW? Chill, ghosts really wasnt that bad lol

      • infinity396

After BO3, I’d rather they replace Treyarch.. LOL

    • HenryDF

Doubt we’ll see a new engine until 2018. Probably won’t be getting one next year with SH’s game.

  • Batman

Raven should get to make their own CoD one day, they are veterans

    • Ak74u

They’re not veterans all they’ve done is graphically update an old cod they haven’t made their own cod besides help with other stuff and manage cod online which is a mash up of bo and mw series. They have just been there as support since mw3 when everything after that was going downhill for cod

Raven should be a main developer. They made COD4 Remastered look so great and even went and redesigned the UI and Menu Screens.

    • PuddleOfStix

AND they want to bring us to modern times! #AllHailRaven

      • Suroz

        read rdjoker’s comment

        • PuddleOfStix

I did. So what? I shouldn’t have faith in them? I had faith in Sledgehammer when I never even heard of them before. I’ve known about Raven longer than I did SHG.

      • jordanxbrookes

Yup, they are the second coming lol

        • PuddleOfStix

Hell, I’d have more faith in Raven than SHG for making a good CoD game.

    • RdJokr

Not to be a downer here, but… all that Raven has worked on so far are side works, and remakes/remasters. Hell, COD Online is pretty much a collection of old stuff from MW and BO series slapped together.

The only thing that was remotely new that came from Raven was Exo Zombies. And we all know the reception to that one. I wouldn’t be so quick to trust Raven as a main dev just yet. They still need to prove themselves, and they’ve got a long way to go.

      • Sexy Mcgee

Raven, the studio, has been around for a long time and they’ve made some decent games.
Mind you, a lot of their projects were of the type where a publisher would give them limited funding and support for a game that might not have mass market appeal, ie. B list games. And for B list games they were actually a great developer.
However, Raven had an Infinity Ward situation of their own. Where a lot of the veteran and original talent or people who were with the company for a long time either left or were let go. In fact, it happened multiple times through out the years.
So at this point Raven are known as a company brand that Activision tasks with something that’s low risk, not too demanding, or puts them in a supporting role. I doubt they’ll get their own COD off shoot or that they’d be able to pull it off.

        • Brad of Duty

I think they are 10x more competent than sledgehammer games to do it. Sledgehammer has no idea of how a cod game should work.

          • Sexy Mcgee

Advanced Warfare had it’s problems but personally I liked it’s boosting system more than BO3’s wall running and jet pack jumping. And I think its more open, longer line of sights maps were much better than IW’s last two games’ labyrinthine rat maze maps. Sure it made some big mistakes in minor details but overall it was a fun game if you learned how to actually use the boost system.

      • jordanxbrookes

I liked Exo Zombies on Outbreak, that’s about it lol. Sure Raven have yet to prove themselves with a fully-fledged Call of Duty game, but they need the chance to do so. As of now I have full faith in Raven based on their previous work, and plus the fact they want to make a modern-era Call of Duty IF they ever had the chance to be a main developer? I hope Activision grant them a chance.

        • RdJokr

I won’t lie, the chance of adding Raven to the main roster and giving each COD a 4-year dev cycle would be a dream come true. If we could apply that now, we’d end up with massive amount of content and probably a less buggy game at launch.

    • Ak74u

Nah, they’ve only helped with side stuff and remasters. They’ve only started helping since MW3

    • Brad of Duty

Raven should replace sledgehammer games, AW was so shit

  • djml9

It took over a year and a half to touch up an apready complete game (and not even the whole game), and people still think new cod games are made from the ground up in a year.

  • taylor.pearce

So they started working on it after the BO3 announcement when they realised people were unhappy with science fiction but it was too late to scrap IW and start over?

    Mmmm marketing
