Treyarch has posted a new FAQ for the PC fans of Black Ops 2. This time there are discussing how the PC team will handle online security, matchmaking info, and servers info.

What anti-cheat will be used?

  • Anti-cheat is a top priority for Call of Duty®: Black Ops II. We have developed our own proprietary server-side anti-cheat technology which will work alongside VAC to deliver the most advanced detection and banning capabilities of any Call of Duty game to date. We have also improved our player reporting system to make it the most effective way that you can help us catch cheaters. And starting on launch day we will have a full-time dedicated pc anti-cheat team focused solely on detecting and banning cheaters. We have a zero tolerance policy on cheating. Cheaters bans are permanent.

Will Black Ops have Matchmaking or Dedicated Servers?

  • Both! Call of Duty®: Black Ops II PC combines matchmaking with secure ranked dedicated servers. This means that you get into Public Matches or League Play via matchmaking lobbies. It is easy to party up and play with your friends. You can adjust your classes or scorestreaks between matches. It also means that every Public or League match is hosted on a dedicated server running in one of our high bandwidth datacenters around the globe.

Will you release the server files?

  • No. We are keeping the server files secure to protect the game from hacking and cheating and ensure the ranking and progression system integrity.

Can I rent a server?

  • No. We are providing a huge number of servers around the world at no extra charge – plenty for everyone to enjoy. And we will administer the servers.

Will there be mod tools?

  • No. As we continually improve and advance our in-house tools for our own content teams we are unable to provide consumer tools due to increased technical requirements, licensing restrictions, and technology dependencies.

Can I rent a server? No. We are cock sucking corporate douches who don’t want the PC community to have and build groups of loyal followers of our game. We’d rather have 50 million 13 year old douchbags just like us who like to play xbox/ps3 versions of our game… Can we make maps? NOOOO cause that would mean we might play COD X longer than 1 year and how could we release the same fucking game as last year, charge you $60 + $45 for map packs if your going to make your own maps? That wouldn’t fit into our strategic plan to squeeze every last drop out of the COD franchise that we can…. IW sucks balls. Now 3arc is even WORSE cause they knew HOW to stay true by at least allowing us to rent/admin our own servers… now they are the ball juice that fell on the floor from IW sucking on balls…. FUCK YOU 3arc and your game…

if you want to create your own maps just play World at War and CoD4.

Careful, your butthurt is showing. You know what happens when you give control to the masses?

      Abuse happens.

And just give you an example, take Battlefield 3 on the 360. Some time ago it allowed players to rent servers. Under the stupidest of circumstances, admins will kick/ban you for the dumbest shit. I got kicked for killing the admin five times in a row. Went back in, did it twice more, and he banned me and sent me a rather angry message.

Another instance, I got randomly kicked for killing the admins girlfriend.

In Black Ops (PC) it was no different. I have one distinct memory of someone throwing a grenade at me. I picked it up, tossed it back, and got a triple kill. Shortly afterwards, I got kickbanned for “hacking”.

My point is, I don’t mind the fact you can’t rent a server. This would be abused for headshot challenges and boosting very, very easily.

And getting randomly kicked, server disconnects and lag aside, just messes up with your fun. It’s not fun, it’s not pleasant, and no one likes it.

      = = =

Your complaints are just a business model. Videogames are now a business model. What will turn X into a profit margin? I understand and share your sympathies for what videogames as a whole are coming to, but

      • Durp

but you’re just going to have to accept the fact that it is what it is. And to be fair, it was NOT Treyarch who decided all the decisions but Activision and Kotick. If you want to blame anyone, blame those two.

    • DavidP

want to rent servers? go play Battlefield 3 and give your money to EA. phaggot

    • James C. Merritt

Sound just like one of those 13 year olds you are complaining about. Grow up.

  • Medibee

    No mod tools? Sigh.

To the “FormerCOD-Player” and any other retard that doesn’t know how corporations like Activision work. This is not a Treyarch decision? Everything regarding server infrastructure and the ability to rent a server is all decided by Activision due to the fact that Treyarch is a Activision studio. They don’t have a say in what they make or how they decide on what to release. They can only propose and the Activision executives have to agree with it. Lamia didn’t say that “the zombie mode is only there because of popular demand” for laughs. Treyarch wants to make that mode but they can’t if it’s not popular because Activision won’t green light it. As long as Treyarch remains a part of Activision instead of working for themselves almost all of their decisions regarding what they make and what they can release is decided for them by Activision.
If you want a good example of a studio that is standalone and chooses what they want to make you just have to look to Insomniac. They made some different games that would never have been published if they were a part of a publisher itself for the simple fact that publishers play it save with their own studios and leave the risk to third-party studios like Insomniac. Fuse is such a risk because they try to establish a completely new IP. EA can take the risk because the contract probably prevents them from losing money on it. But for Insomniac it is a risk. I can honestly think of only one publisher that tries to take risk these days and that is Ubisoft. But i feel that is more due to necessity because, except for Assassins Creed, they games haven’t done too well.

TL;DR: Not a Treyarch decision but Activision. You want to blame anyone, blame Kotick.

Treyarch should Kickstart a project :>

      • Macrox25

That would be awesome 🙂 But they can’t. As I explained Activision owns them and unless Activision let go of Treyarch as an internal studio that will never happen. 🙁

  • aeles

I don’t think this is a bad decision.
I believe that the majority of casual players like myself will be happy. Matchmaking just like MW3 but with dedis instead of P2P.

My experience with Blops1 dedis was actually kind of bad. Lots of empty servers. Servers from which anyone with a skill higher than the admin gets kicked. People leaving the server when they lost and sometimes it was a miracle if anyone came in to repopulate it.
Of course they will be people saying that I should just find a nice server and stick with it. The problem is that always playing with the same set of people is kind of boring (personal opinion!).
Look at L4D2 for example. No one complains about that there!

The solution here might be a limitation of freedom of the players. But if they added proper voting tools, it might go unnoticed.

The only thing that makes me sad with the FAQ are the lack of mods. As it always adds to the longevity of any game.

Anyway, looking forward to BO2 – 45 days left!

  • Matuzz

Well this is just bad to the bone for Clans. Also servers controlled by Admins helped to lower the amount of hackers a lot. Plus I liked that in Black Ops I never had to deal with Second chance as it was banned from all the servers. No server files and server renting is just horrible.

  • Nos Seam

yay matchmaking is in bo2 pc! i skipped black ops just because of no matchmaking

  • Anon

To be honest All I want from this game is functionality on the PC, an FoV slider…unlike MOH:WF and proper options so I can enjoy the game and it works optimally for a PC

  • Mike-A

In black ops on pc, I was kicked for “Chopper-whore” I had my gunship on Nuketown, was hard to find a game which wasn’t Nuketown 24/7 so I like that people can’t rent the servers and abuse they’re “power” I got kicked cuz I was spawn killing them, well then change the stupid map and all the crouch servers. omgosh… really
