New details have emerged from GameInformer’s 12 page edition featuring Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare. In the game’s campaign, you will play as Private Mitchell, and he is voiced by Troy Baker. This character was given a generic backstory, so players can better inhabit the character.

Troy Baker only voices during cutscenes and never during actual gameplay.

    Close enough

  • LikeaSomeboday

Why was he given a generic backstory?

    • Shardlotte

So that people can basically assign their own story to him. It’s usually like that for the CoD games.

      • LikeaSomeboday

So if I want him to be an undercover Kangaroo?

        • MichiganerE

          Yes, you can do that.

  • HenryDF

Dammit, only cutscenes. Shame, it would have been interesting to have yourself talking and interacting as you play, but at least we’re gonna be talking in cutscenes.

It felt horrible in Ghosts to just be the silent guy following other people around. You were spoken to like a 5 year old kid.

    • Mitch

When Rorke wrecks your whole arm and Logan is just completely silent, that deserves a facepalm

      • HenryDF

It was just so frustrating. People spoke to you as if you were a child, and you just followed them around. No personality at all.

        • What are you talking about it was a super emotional story….and the dog was a special part too…..gone after a few actions

          • You got shot, but still you got carried by one of the most boring people on earth…

          • Man that guy,he never talks,such a creep

          • *shuders*

          • VikRez

Most of the time Riley’s stuck with Merrick.

    • KillzoneVII

Was thinking the same thing, Troy Baker tends to voice characters who talk during gameplay, and does it really well making them feel like real people with personalities. Still, I will buy the game solely because Baker is in it, was going to buy it anyway but now they’ve undeniably earned a sale from me.

    • Fighter

Yeah, that’s what I like about Black Ops, is that you can hear Mason talk while you’re playing as him which is cool.

    • kyr95

I agree it would be great to also talk during gameplay, but i think this might work even better emotionally and help you inhabitate with the character. Many games have achieved that (e.g. Bioshock 1-Dont remember the protagonist’s name , Metro 203-Last Light-Artyom, Battlefield Bad Company 1&2-Marllow, Call of Duty 4-Soap) I think this will work pretty well to tell you the truth.

Troy Baker? I can only imagine the acting now

  • Ryumoau

Yay. I’m glad the info was of some help. Still wish there was an easier way of given this info out. Its a pain trying to rewrite everything i see. lol

    • Arent you allowed just to take a screenshot of it?

  • jooker-jr

    Game of the year

  • MrJDGuns1

    TROY BAKER!!! Enough said.

getting pretty bored of having troy baker in everything

    • Ryumoau

to be fair, hes alot better at doing different voices than someone like Nolan North. Who seems to also be in too many things, but sounds the same in almost all of them.

  • No Private Pyle :l

  • HenryDF

          • Grigori

            I’m sorry, I can’t help it.

    • Rai

      Good stuff!

    • Awesome, dude! Thanks a lot!

One question: On page 7 the sidebar cuts off at “the ability to boost-“. Where is the rest of that text? That sidebar on that page is all about multiplayer specifically so I’m sure we’re all interested in what else is there.

    • Archer

That was a really good read. Very informative on what new ideas Sledgehammer is bringing to the table.

  • JJ

Damn, i guess the Masons are gunna stay the superior protagonists, at least in my books. Having a silent protagonist completely ruined Ghosts’ campaign for me. But hopefully we’ll have proper cut-scenes in this one, not the crap ones we get in IW games.

    • Batman

      Same here

  • VVFZ

The reason the character you control is silent most of the time is because you are supposed to be imagining it in your own voice!

  • NiftyGam3r

    Isnt Troy Delsin from infamous?

    • SeaSaltSora

      Yes. 🙂

    • Mitch

And Joel from The Last of Us, and Booker from Bioshock Infinite 🙂

      • and VTOL gunner voice in BO2, and PFC Allen in mw2, And scarecrow in mw2!

  • Batman

I hate characters that dont talk, like logan and even recker from bf4.

  • I bet you

  • RdJokr

So I’m guessing Mitchell’s the guy with the beanie? Or is he someone else?

  • Wraith

No wonder. Troy Baker was the first thing I thought of when I saw that guy.

  • Spectre01N7

    Troy Baker is everywhere

  • Hhhgffjjgghbh

In my opinion it’s better to play as a character that never talks, and when he eventually does, whatever he says blows your mind.

  • TheUnionJake

I’m really sick of the whole “mute protagonist” thing. IMO Black Ops 2 got it right with David and Alex talking occasionally. Hell, it seems to only be an IW trademark, either way, I’m not a fan.

  • Blaine

Troy Baker is in like every game. But I can’t complain, he’s the most bad-ass voice actor I’ve ever heard. I actually kinda like IW’s method of never having the character speak as you play. In fact in COD4 you never even got to see Soaps face or here his voice in cutscenes either, leaving the character completely up to your own imagination, or even making it feel like you were actually put into the game yourself. I find that it’s usually kinda cheesy when the character you play as talks, it breaks the immersion for me.

  • VikRez

Well, even worse than silent characters, you can’t see their legs! I hope in this CoD, we can see the legs of the character.
