Amazon and Twitch have just confirmed that Amazon has acquired Twitch for $970 million today. Previously, the rumor started that Google intended to buy Twitch, but now Amazon has made a leap into the gaming industry with this purchase.

Letter from Twitch:

Dear Twitch Community,

It’s almost unbelievable that slightly more than 3 years ago, Twitch didn’t exist. The moment we launched, we knew we had stumbled across something special. But what followed surprised us as much as anyone else, and the impact it’s had on both the community and us has been truly profound.

Your talent, your passion, your dedication to gaming, your memes, your brilliance – these have made Twitch what it is today. Every day, we strive to live up to the standard set by you, the community. We want to create the very best place to share your gaming and life online, and that mission continues to guide us.

Together with you, we’ve found new ways of connecting developers and publishers with their fans. We’ve created a whole new kind of career that lets people make a living sharing their love of games. We’ve brought billions of hours of entertainment, laughter, joy and the occasional ragequit. I think we can all call that a pretty good start.

Today, I’m pleased to announce we’ve been acquired by Amazon. We chose Amazon because they believe in our community, they share our values and long-term vision, and they want to help us get there faster. We’re keeping most everything the same: our office, our employees, our brand, and most importantly our independence. But with Amazon’s support we’ll have the resources to bring you an even better Twitch.

I personally want to thank you, each and every member of the Twitch community, for what you’ve created. Thank you for putting your faith in us. Thank you for sticking with us through growing pains and stumbles. Thank you for bringing your very best to us and sharing it with the world. Thank you, from a group of gamers who never dreamed they’d get to help shape the face of the industry that we love so much.

It’s dangerous to go alone. On behalf of myself and everyone else at Twitch, thank you for coming with us.

Amazon also issued a press release:

“Broadcasting and watching gameplay is a global phenomenon and Twitch has built a platform that brings together tens of millions of people who watch billions of minutes of games each month – from The International, to breaking the world record for Mario, to gaming conferences like E3. And, amazingly, Twitch is only three years old,” said Jeff Bezos, founder and CEO of “Like Twitch, we obsess over customers and like to think differently, and we look forward to learning from them and helping them move even faster to build new services for the gaming community.”

“Amazon and Twitch optimize for our customers first and are both believers in the future of gaming,” said Twitch CEO Emmett Shear. “Being part of Amazonwill let us do even more for our community. We will be able to create tools and services faster than we could have independently. This change will mean great things for our community, and will let us bring Twitch to even more people around the world.”

  • Is it a yay or nay? Hopefully it means more servers.

    • #

Not many more servers because Google would have given it 5 bajillion servers 😀

  • Crystal Toxic

Is this good or bad ?

    • Does it change your life? No? Then it’s good.

      • Michael

He was just asking a question. Lol ?

        • jordanxbrookes

And he responded with a question AND an answer 😛
EDIT: Make that TWO questions 😛

          • Michael

How do you make an edit on your post?

          • jordanxbrookes

            You click ‘Edit’.

          • Michael

Im on mobile so where would that be?

          • jordanxbrookes

I’m guessing under the comment you made, just like on PC and Tablet.

        • And i answered it.

          • Michael

Yeah you responded… In an ungrateful way ?

          • I guess so. Let’s just see how this works out. Amazon seems to have really wanted Twitch if they paid almost a billion dollars!

          • Amazon

That’s how much its worth 🙂

          • I’m not even going to argue with you…

          • Michael

  • jordanxbrookes

At least it’s still Twitch and not YouTwitch, glad it was Amazon and not Google, Google already fucked up YouTube.

    • Yeah. It’s funny how two former PayPal employees make this amazing idea of YouTube. Then a big company like Google takes it over because the idea was too good for them to think of it themselves. 😛

      • Guest

Well Google are going to be the biggest company in the world when they buy the internet.

        • Guest

We shall find a new internet then.

    • TheShadowReaper

yep. the Google monopoly would have been the worst case scenario. thank the gaming gods it didnt happen.

    • DarthDan97

      Google fucks up everything..

      • Dylan DuGirls

Trynna make that Twitch Plus account so you can comment in streams?

        • DarthDan97

Oh god! The horror that would’ve been! So glad that it didn’t happen tho!

      • jordanxbrookes

They’ve only done ONE thing that is great, and that’s their own search engine, everything else is fucked.

        • What about google chrome? Google Earth? Google maps?

          • jordanxbrookes

            Ok, they’ve done 4 things that’s great.

          • ha ha ok

    • 111AlaN111

      Why is Youtube fucked?

      Because of Google+? I don’t think that’s a huge issue.

      • Siftblade of Rivia

        Here’s a list I screencapped long ago.

        • 111AlaN111

It’s not about Google ruining Youtube, it’s about Google+ being horrible. I think that the advertisements were there long ago.

          • Siftblade of Rivia

Google ruined Youtube by implementing Google+, which is shit. That was the point of the image.

          • 111AlaN111

Then Youtube is ruined for those that love to comment, but not for the ones who just go there and watch videos, wich is the main purpose for Youtube to exist.

          • Siftblade of Rivia

Yeah, pretty much, and especially the last point. Forcing us to sign up to Google+ if you want to subscribe, like a video, favorite, or comment on the video, and taking advantage of the fact that all our favorite Youtubers use Youtube because there is no good alternative. It forces you to sign up to a shitty social media wannabe that nobody wanted to use without asking or giving an option to not use it, just because Google wanted us to use their crappy service. Obviously you can watch Twitch and it doesn’t matter who owns it if you just watch, but if you want to comment, subscribe, or follow a stream or channel, I don’t want to be forced to use Google+ once again. Also, if Google bought this, they would basically have a monopoly in videos and streaming. And that’s never a good thing for consumers, because at that point, Google could do anything they want and we can’t do shit about it since there’s no good alternative (pretty much what Youtube did).

    • RebelLee

Amazon and Google fuck everything up.

  • IamConnolly

    Well this was unexpected.

  • Josh

    Twitch is finally happy!

    • AcePhoenix007

      Fucking brilliant.

    • Sal

    • NEONHAZ13

      Omg laughed so hard

    • Jasy

Get this guy a FUCKING Cookie. You, sir, have just won the internet. 😀

  • Tucker Furlong

I don’t mind what Google did to Youtube, but I’m happy it’s not Google so we don’t get an internet monopoly. Twitch also gets more funding now, so in my opinion this is an all around good thing.

    • Le Guy who drowned quiet

      nope FAN SERVICE

      • Guest

wtf amazon is just as shit as google. fan service my ass

        • Le Guy who drowned quiet

I know think im an ass.but if shit google would have taken it would become monopoly in which the head company is shit.

  • James Veach

Btw off topic but no one has mentioned the new mini map in cod:aw in regards to the fact that it shows where your teamates are shooting.

  • Mario Rivera

I believe this will be a great thing for gaming in general but dnt take my word for it just yet. The last time a corporation of this magnitude got involved with gaming we ended up with xbox and all their shady pricing/policies.

  • GodLikeLeftNut

*streamer previously looked at butt plugs. viewer click here to see a wider range of mens anal toys available (buy the butt boy destroyer 3000 in 1 hour and 23 minuets to receive by Thursday)* – reviews 52 – Big Dave: pleasure ive never felt before! and the ball tickler function is unreal, my prostate didn’t stand a chance! 5 out of 5.

    • Jasy

  • Ryumoau

i imagine alot of livestreamers will be pleased by this decision over Google buying them.

    • AcePhoenix007

I’m one of those livestreamers. I am really happy Google didn’t buy Twitch.

      • Amen, i have just started my stream on twitch after doing ok on YouTube but it’s a struggle to start over again gaining an audience

        • Siftblade of Rivia

If anything, Twitch is more of a struggle than Youtube unless you’re a big LoL player or are already big on Youtube. I’ve seen some really big Youtube channels with very little Twitch views during their streams.

  • Zarky

Lets hope Twitch doesn’t break when stupid LoL tournaments are going on with Amazon is charge like it does currently! Lags,Chat breaks..

  • 111AlaN111

Why does Amazon want Twitch? I can’t see how Amazon will recover the money, I just think of advertisements.

    • Siftblade of Rivia

Same as Youtube. Ads, and the fact that there are subscribers on Twitch that cost $5 a month which many people pay for, some of that goes to Twitch.

  • jooker-jr

Plot twist : Microsoft buys twitch after one week

    • Thinkb4utryandbefunny

Would have been funnier if you said google bought amazon…

  • Praise the lord Google didn’t get it! It would have ruined Twitch

  • Kill Denied

95% of the people here are using Google as their search engine.

  • DesignedByJack

I’m kinda relieved that it wasn’t Google that bought Twitch. A monopolistic situation is never good for the end user. Google was starting to acquire everything tech-related along with Facebook and I’m glad to see a third player in that game.

Amazon’s servers are some of the best out there and I hope for the best about the future of Twitch.

I can’t wait and hope to see that Pornhub is buying Snapchat. That would be pretty funny.

And what does this have to do with Call of Duty?

  • dtssoft

Amazon service is the worst with my last 3 shopping experiences.. In one, item delivered was broken and had deal with their help-desk to return it back.. In my last shopping experience, they claim that item (Order 404-4524779-1660327) was delivered, even though I didn’t receive it.. Delivery is made to someone “Noor Ahmaed”. I filed claim multiple times, but every time it has been turned down.. Very very disappointing..
