By now it might be hard to ignore the similarities between Call of Duty Black Ops 3 and Deus Ex Mankind Divided. Body augmentation and a civil war between regular humans and “augmented humans” seem to be the main theme for both games.

Prior to today’s teaser it appeared only cybernetic enhancements were the only common factors, however, the recent Black Ops 3 teaser hinted at a civil war between “humans and cyborgs” and that’s when people started chiming in.

The official Deus Ex Twitter account had this to say after the teaser trailer went live:

Major same sites also noted the similarities:

…and then the Deus Ex Executive Art Director, Jonathan J-B decided to fire a couple of shots:

It should be noted that both games have been in development for a couple years already, long before either game was announced. Deus Ex might have revealed their title first but Call of Duty Black Ops 3 has the luxury of coming out first. We’ll know for sure how similar they are when Black Ops 3 gets a proper reveal this Sunday so stay tuned….

  • CoDforever

Lol sometime i really feel bad for call of duty. Every thing new they attempt to gets smashed cause it “copied” someone else.

    • Daniel

True, but I just wanted a WW2/Vietnam/Cold War game

      • Tricky VIk

“Life is never fair my friend.”

        • Please, not another account that talks in quotes, I can’t handle all this confusion.

          • Tricky VIk

            “Same account.”

      • Muscles>VanillaIndyMidgets

That won’t happen ever again. Next CODs will be Ghosts 2, Ghosts 3 , Advanced Warfare 2, Advanced Warfare 3.

Only hope for the COD series is that Treyarch finishes the Black Ops series with BOPS 3 and makes a new non-futuristic COD slightly similar to Ghosts/AW series.

        • Deuce (PS4)

          your time line is fucked up, – Black Ops 3 ’15- Ghosts 2 ’16 — — AW2 ’17 and WaW2 ’18

          • Muscles>VanillaIndyMidgets

You’re assuming i intended to wrote it in order. I wrote down each sequel per dev studio.

    • Nobody

Watch the trailers for Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Then watch Black Ops III.
It’s not just the same theme, it’s the same style.

      • Siftblade of Rivia

They were both in development way before either game was announced.

        • Nobody

I said Human Revolution, dude. Not Mankind Divided.

          • CoDforever

Ive played and beaten Human Revolution. Both games have the same concept (Cybernetic enchancements and limbs etc) but they both willl have different conflicts it seems. In Deus Ex, the main plot is normal people being against modified people. In bo3 it seems the conflict will be America using these cybernetic enhancements in wars etc.

          • Nobody

Except Human Revolution isn’t the first Deus Ex game, is it?
Not to mention in Deus Ex augmentation is already used in war, so that’s a moot argument.
But my main argument isn’t that they have similar themes, it’s the fact that COD III’s trailer is as extremely similar in STYLE to Human Revolution’s trailers. It asks THE EXACT SAME QUESTIONS Deus Ex does.

The only difference is that Deus Ex won’t be a game people get tired of playing after two days.

          • CoDforever

If ur saying the game copied the original deus ex which came out a decade ago, then halo has copied every sci fi franchise ever.

They do ask similar questions but the gameplay and the actual storyline will be much different, i gurantee that,

          • Kieran

I spot a Deus Ex fanboy, I honestly don’t get why everyone is so pissy, they’re completely fucking different in their gameplay styles, campaign aside the enhancements probably won’t have a huge effect on the game and be the equivalent of exo’s, or maybe even perks, and as for the last comment, BO2 has 100,000 plus players daily [on 360 alone], and the last time I saw someone playing DE:HR was….when did that game come out again?
And I even enjoyed that game, but get real.

          • Nobody

I’m talking about the story mode, not multiplayer. You can’t judge two games on two different play modes.

      • NerdoTheBoyWonder

Not like Deus Ex was the first game or media to show this conflict either.

        • Nobody

It’s one thing to explore a similar theme, it’s something else to rip it off entirely.

          • CoDforever

We havent seen anything of the actual game yet! Remember before AW reveal came out the only story bit they gave us was “What if PMCs rise and take over” and the storyline was much moe specific and different.

          • Nobody

For f***’s sake, I’m not talking about the game itself, I have enough common sense to know the difference between an FPS and an RPG.

            I’m talking about THIS TRAILER.
And if half the themes in this trailer are incorporated into that game, then we can continue this discussion later.

    • lol ikr? for AW, it was Halo, Titanfall, etc… Give me a break.

  • CoDforever

This is a bit of a stretch since the game hasnt even been revealed

    • Roxas3510

Human augmentation is what’s being compared here, the game doesn’t have to be revealed to know that if you watched the teaser.

  • This is such a big coincidence. Oh well both games will be great despite their similarities 🙂

  • Jasco

    First titanfall, now deus ex.

    • Guest

im now in belief that activision

  • drjakeyoung

It’s double XP this weekend on AW just to let you guys know

  • Matthew

This is what you call “COD Timing”

Now this makes me believe that activisIon is trying to take out their competition. First titanfall and now deus ex. Because this game title is so big they can take out any games with the same style. GG activision

    • Tricky VIk

      “That actually makes sense.”

    • RegaDega

lol I know you’re trolling, but lemme get this out of the way. Why take out Deus Ex when that n CoD are two completely different games? One’s a RPG that involves NPC interaction and a mild bit of platforming and puzzle solving. The other is a military shooter meant to cater to the general gaming public with fast-paced gameplay. It wouldn’t make sense for CoD to compete with a game that has almost no similarity to it (excluding point-of-view and plot atmosphere).

      • People will *always* find a reason to hate on CoD (as long as it is a best-selling game), even if its the most ridiculous idea.

  • KevJumbaify .

I can’t wait for deus ex mankind divided! The trailer was one of the best game trailers I’ve ever seen.

  • Daniel

The concept for both looks awesome I must admit

  • KevJumbaify .

Really hope treyarch doesn’t kiss up to the MLG nerds. I want them to go all out on multiplayer. I just don’t want any boost jump at all. Got so annoying in aw.

    • Tricky VIk

      “Let them hear you.”

      • KevJumbaify .

dey won’t even listen probably 🙁 at least we know Zombies will be awesome

        • MichiganerE

Don’t be surprised if Zombies has some bullshit microtransactions that let’s you pay your way to round 50.

          • Drasadex

            Or pay for points.

          • MichiganerE

People will pay if they have the option.

          • Drasadex

which is pretty sad, but yeah.

          • MichiganerE

Yep, I also wouldn’t be surprised by microtransactions being in the campaign.

          • Drasadex

oooo, pay to complete a level!

          • MichiganerE

YAW, and too earn all the achievements!

          • Drasadex

Or to complete the Campaign challenges.

          • MichiganerE

            Or everything.

          • Kyle G

            You whine alot.

          • MichiganerE

Well, you know, with the bullshit of the game industry right now, I have a reason to.

    • Drasadex

      Don’t worry, they will.

    • Monkey48

      This. Gospel.

    • Muszic

      lmao fuckin loser

    • Devin Wolfe

Sounds like you need to git gud.

    • spartanelite

They did that in black ops 2 and it worked Good

    • Rorke File

I hope they listen to the community. BO2 had also a Arcade feeling and that was for the MLGnerds I didn’t like that want feeling of Bo1. MW3 had also good feeling.

    • The Last Colossus

Its coming back, I think there will be a traditional playlist just like in AW

  • Daniel

If it plays like BO1 or WaW, I will buy it in a heartbeat

    • KevJumbaify .

True. WaW is my favorite cod, yes I just said that.

    • DaRaginAsian

I dunno about WaW. I liked it too, but stuff like hit detection and bayonets were weird. I’m sure that can be easily fixed tho.

  • Cod blows

Lol trust CoD to have to rip off another series just to concoct a game. First they ripped off titanfall and now the exact story of all the deus ex games combined. can’t these developers create anything themselves or do they have to clone everything and use the brand to bait people in? so pathetic.

    • Joshwoocool

      gr8 b8 m8 8/8

    • Putin

They were both long into development before either one was announced asshole. So unless they just decided within the last two weeks after Deus Ex was announced to do a game about augmented humans, it would be literally impossible to copy them

      • Cod blows

Are you telling me Black Ops 3 was in development before 2000 (original Deus Ex)? Are you also telling me that it was being produced before 2003 (Invisible War) and 2011? (Human Revolution)

        Kids these days eh?

        • Putin

I have no problem if you think that they copied the human augmentation, but the whole war idea was really only heavily shown in the new Deus Ex, so Treyarch couldn’t have stolen that.

        • So no game since the release of Deus Ex until the Earth blows up cant have human augmentation in it? lulz~

  • The7Reaper

Who cares honestly I didn’t even like Deus Ex either way their 2 separate games.

EDIT: Also to note Treyarch are selling theirs better with these strange snapchats and weird Twitter accounts like the Unmarked Man and random websites but that’s my opinion.

  • Black

Now can I have Adam Jensen’s coat for my Black Ops 3 soldier ?

  • KevJumbaify .

So MP is going to be cyborgs vs humans with wall running and other futuristic shit like eye lazers and super speed and biometric repulsive lazer diamond coated skin with robotic dinosaurs as a killstreak and rideable flying vehicles?

    • This isn’t confirmed and if anything you named is in MP it is likely I won’t play it very long

      • KevJumbaify .

        Joke. -_-

    • Uh, no.

You can’t be serious, that is completely ridiculous.

There aren’t dinosaurs, there are cows.

      Get your facts straight, nerd.

  • Drasadex

    lmao nice.

  • Ryumoau

Its weird that i personally didn’t think about Dues Ex at all. Though that game should be happy that its getting this press at all considering how much bigger Black Ops 3 will be than it.

    • Nobody

Which is why Mankind Divided will walk away rewards and recognition among actual gamers while COS keeps its cruddy reputation? Money fades, legacies don’t.

      • Ryumoau

of course it will because game reviews are pretentious d-bags who most gamers don’t even listen to. And what does Counterstrike have to do with anything? Bringing that game into this discussion just makes you sound like an idiot.

        • Nobody

          Who said anything about Counterstrike?
I’m talking about Call of Sh*t.

And will you say the same thing about those pretentious d-bags if they give this game a good score?

Right. Games like Deus Ex actual require thinking to beat. Meanwhile, in COS….

          • Ryumoau

lol are you still babbling? No one cares, Black Ops 3 is the only thing that matters right now.

          • Nobody

Actually, I’d argue Witcher 3 and Arkham Knight are more on people’s minds at the moment.
            You know…*good* games…

  • Teasers tease me (like they’re supposed to), and I find it very annoying at times. I just want the trailer to get leaked like what happend last year. My patients isn’t doing so well…

  • Fluffy Monkey

Im not the only one who thinks the whistleblower in the teaser is supposed to be Edward Snowden right??

  • Roxas3510

“It should be noted that both games have been in development for a couple years already, long before either game was announced.”

Well, if we’re talking about the concept of human augmentation between the two, Deus Ex has been dealing with augmentation since it’s first game, so there isn’t any debate over who took who’s idea, if that’s what people are debating about. I personally don’t see it as CoD stealing ideas. They’re already on the futuristic train and human augmentation seems like the appropriate next step after exo suits. I don’t see either story being similar in any way other than the augmentation.

    • iamdingo

I agree, it’s just people trying to find any sort of reason to be able to talk down upon a game that they dislike.

Honestly, I love Deus Ex, but I believe that even if Treyarch is inspired by what Deus Ex is, then let it be; it will only expand upon the ideas that the game has created, and will allow for even more people to be able to get in on it.

I never really saw anyone complaining about the sudden influx of WWII games in their heyday.

  • Rorschach Ink

Oh man! I didn’t know they were still making Deus Ex games! I loved Human Revolution. I also like this new theme to CoD, we all knew it would have headed this direction anyways. The teaser that came out gave me chills and got me super hyped.

  • Trippy Killa

Is the deus ex series good?

    • BradyAlucard[sillibk]

      It’s more than good.

    • Drasadex

  • AstroCyborg

are people shocked cod always copies other games

    • Epicsand

How have they copied? Most of what people have said they “copied” was taken from reality, and theories of people it was not made by.

      • AstroCyborg

look at the comparisions online they also stole double jumps, stim, goliath from titanfall, cloaking crysis, pick 10 homefront & the list goes on

        • lol, you cant be serious?… I guess any game that has a mech/robot-like suit that is manned is ripping off from Titanfall (I mean hell, the two “suits” don’t even compare – what about Ironman?). I guess any game that has cloaking is ripping off Crysis. I guess any game that has a space-looking helmet is ripping off Halo. Give me a break. Might as well start calling all science fiction games (like Star Citizen) a rip-off from Star Wars/Star Trek and games with cars and guns a rip-off from GTA.

          • AstroCyborg

cod fanboys can’t handle the truth

          • iamdingo

Give me one good piece of evidence that backs your statement up on how CoD copies other games. Just one. Anything other than empty claims. One. Anything? No?

            Thought so.

And before you reply, take into consideration that art is subjective.

          • AstroCyborg

i already did 4 in fact

          • iamdingo

            “Anything other than empty claims.”

  • feelfree97

    I love Jonathan J-B second tweet –
“Adam Jensen says welcome on the bandwagon! The Liquor bar is at the back ;)”

This is the difference between developers and fans.
If a fan saw this they would be like “oh it’s so copying of Deus Ex, how dare they? etc etc.”

But when a developer saw this they were like “hmm not bad…. knock yourself out”

At the very least he guy feels good that the largest AAA shooter franchise wants to tackle similar issues about technology.

  • Pablo Cesar

This is obviously a Advertising Campaign from the developers of Deus Ex.

Imagine all the people behind the hype treyarch has built, the developers of Deus Ex just took the advantage to put their game on the news and advertise it! WAKE UP PEOPLE

if you really support treyarch, stop debating! defending COD will just make Deus Ex look like a victim, when they are the ones that attacked first.

  • Illusive Man

“Call of Duty Black Ops 3 has the luxury of coming out first.” That’s because Eidos actually cares about the quality of their game and don’t try to release a sequel every year just to stay relevant.

    • J4MES

Spot on. The ‘luxury of coming out first’ aka COD sales matter more than quality…

    • jooker-jr

I’m not a Dev but I think that 3 years is enough for a sequel.

      • Roxas3510

Depends on what the developer hopes to achieve with the sequel. In the case of CoD, I don’t think there’s much to be done. It’s always the same engine and the same gameplay, the only difference is the features they add in: new guns, maps, UI, etc. If a developer wanted to do a lot more for a sequel, it could take them longer. Mankind Divided may be way better and different than Human Revolution.

        • jooker-jr

You’re right, but it’s about 3 years for most sequels.

    • iamdingo

Implying that Treyarch finished the game 2 years before they could even release it. Perfectly logical, I must applaud you.

  • jooker-jr

Some people start stupid things just for the sake of ardument.
And Jonathan J-B great and polite.

  • k5berry

Holy shit Jonathan J-B is so fucking mad.

  • Melchor

Much like AW was said that it was a Titan Fall rip-off. Honesty I don’t care, as long as the game is fun they can “Shut up and take my money!”

In regards to boost jumping, sure it was a bit insane at first in AW but now I am used to it. Not sure if removing it will be a good idea, in my opinion removing it will make the gameplay too slow and it sets the door open for the good old campers that were spawned in Ghost. :/ We have to wait and see what Treyarch comes up with. (Fingers crossed)

  • zINz_FURY

The ideas of human augmentation/”what is life” has been in literature and movies before video games were a thing. Everything nowadays can be thought to have been stolen from previous works.

    • iamdingo

      THANK YOU.

  • Joe Michael Stonebraker

The current Black Ops 3 trailer doesn’t even show the game, yet.

  • mark boyle

cod stole the idea of shooting weapons with the right trigger.

  • The Last Colossus

Halo is probably next for Call of Duty to rip off.

  • Tep Kok

I love how the article refers to “Deus Ex” as a company and entity in itself, instead of it being a product of Eidos and Square. Can’t get quality like that anywhere else. The implication that Deus Ex only started with Mankind Divided and that the series didn’t exist long before CoD is precious too.

  • Jonathan

I have an idea for a new CoD Campaign; To not be an American/Brit and be like, an Asian, Middle Eastern, Russian, Australian or some other race (I don’t count the games: 1, 2, 3 and WaW and every spin-off (I.E. Finest Hour)) because I’m tired of “Serving your Country”, do something radical (maybe YOU are the antagonist). Oh, and make the antagonist kill epic (like in the MW series).

  • Matthew Plin

Who cares if one game has the same theme as another? To the Deus Ex fanboys: if you’re worried about this, then that only means you don’t have faith in your game’s developers. It doesn’t matter whether or not the two have similar themes, what matters is which game portrays their theme better than the other. Why are Deus ex fans so scared?

  • C. D. Carney

What’s the greatest form of flattery? Imitation. Remember in the late 90’s there was a lot of plane jacking movies? Then there was a spate of asteroid/end of the world movies? And of course recently we had White House Down and Olympus Has Fallen… Same movies, same plot devices, etc etc. Yeah they look similar but in reality aren’t both of them rip offs of earlier cyberpunk stories with PMCs, cyborgs, massive conspiracies, robot warriors, HK-drones, all that jazz just thrown together in one mix? I just hope this spurs each one to outdo the other (and makes DXMD come out sooner than next freakin year)! Really, we are obviously in real life headed towards a future where the military will be using drones and exoskeletal warriors if not outright augmented cyber-soldiers and hacking squads. Can we not use these ideas in a game/story/movie without saying it’s a rip off of Deus Ex 15 years ago? Which they obviously will be, Warren Spector be praised, but…
