When Activision announced Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered, they also announced that Raven Software would be leading development of the title, with assistance from Infinity Ward.

Infinity Ward’s studio head, Dave Stohl, revealed to Forbes that the decision to hand it off to another studio came because they did not have enough resources to dedicate to making a remaster alongside Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare.

“Part of it is a resource thing. As you bring the old game over to new tech,” Stohl says, “you want to make sure you don’t lose the feel, the vibe, the look even though you’re using all this modern technology with physically based rendering pipelines and stuff like that. So the game’s gonna look terrific, but you want to make sure you don’t lose that vibe or that feel of the original game.”

Infinity Ward and Raven Software have worked together in the past, on Call of Duty: Ghosts and Modern Warfare 3, so they were excited to collaborate again on this together.

Raven Software’s Studio Director David Pellas spoke with Forbes about some of the ways they are improving the title to look great on current-gen consoles. While making these updates, Pellas reiterated the fact that, while they are updating the graphics, they are being very careful to not adjust or alter the core gameplay of Call of Duty 4.

“So what we did for multiplayer, for example, is we worked on the map Overgrown and we used that as our beautiful corner, our proof of concept of what we’re aspiring to get,” says Pellas. “And we worked on the foliage, we worked on the grass, we worked on the wind, the sky, the buildings, the textures. So much love went into crafting Overgrown and making it just an amazing experience, amazing visuals, that we then used that as kind of our temperature gauge on the other maps that we were working on.”

“Our directive at the beginning, and we believe this to be an important aspect of the remaster, is to remain true to the tenets that made modern warfare the game we all remember it to be. So we’re not looking to reinvent the wheel, we’re really trying to stay true to that game experience.”

Pellas described in detail some specific updates they look for to bring to the maps; specifically, they are working on bringing more attention to details on maps, which the 2007 original release did not have because of old technology at the time:

“Things like clouds moving over and being able to have that shadow of the cloud as it moves over the sun, is just a really impressive thing to see. The dynamics of the water effects as you’re splashing through the ravine in Overgrown, for example, is another one of those features that we wouldn’t have been able to do seven years ago, but the new generation of hardware pulls it off without a hitch.

“So there’s a lot of little things like that added to it,” he continues, “just to add a sense of realism and give you a real presence within the world that, as good as the first one was, these little tweaks just take it to another level.”

Raven Software was asked by Activision if they wanted to make the Mastered, and Pellas said there was no hesitation from the team: they wanted to do it.

“When this came across our desk as an opportunity, we leapt at it,” Pellas says. “There was no question. This product would not have been possible without the fans asking for it,” he adds. “We’ve seen petitions online. Activision really did listen, and this is the fruit of that labor. So very much this is a community project, and we’re just really proud to be able to bring it to [fans.]”

Raven Software’s Studio Head, Brian Raffel, stated that their goal was to make sure that they honor the legacy of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare in making the remastered. They did not want to alter what made that title great in the first place.

“We wanted to make sure we hit every note as far as audio and the visual quality, and texture density, the visual effects so the whole experience was true to the original, but amplified in a way that was showing the next-generation quality.”

“Our goal is to make the fans happy that we were respectful to the original and did it honor,” Raffel says. “That’s really what’s important to us. Or to me at least.”

Raven Software has been working on Call of Duty since Call of Duty: Black Ops 1, where they made DLC for that title; they also worked on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3’s DLC season, and Call of Duty: Ghosts, Advanced Warfare, and Black Ops 3. The team also developed Call of Duty Online, the free to play title, available only in China.

          Battlefront was one of those games that looked great, but was really just half a game. No single player campaign like the old Battlefront because they focused too much on graphics and multiplayer and nothing more.

          Call of Duty, on the other hand, has a great balance of good graphics and multiple modes to choose from, not just multiplayer and a survival mode with horrifically stupid AI enemies.

            The 2 really bad things they did were sbmm and supply drops. About the second one i dont know, maybe it was activisions fault, but apparently the first one is theirs. People hated sbmm aparently, i didnt mind it so much cause i am used to the a harder matchmaking system which is the dotas one. But yeah , if the majority of the people hated it they should have changed it. Every studio makes mistakes. Treyarch as an example is known for the bad netcode and lag comp bs, which is way more fundamental in the way you play the game.

          The problem with the matchmaking in AW is that it wasn’t an intended feature at all. Black Ops III suffered a similar situation on consoles last Christmas, and Vahn immediately stated it was a bug within the hotfix, and they rolled it back. Another Treyarch dev spoke on how SBMM actually works in COD games, and it is nothing like what people are labeling “SBMM” in AW.

          The matchmaking in AW was fucked to an extent, yes, but I believe it boils down to it being a bug that they never found a solution to. Why that is, I don’t know.

    Great! Now, can they remaster MW2 now? All they have to do is:

    1. Keep in Danger Close perk, but remove the effect for the noob tubes. I actually used Danger Close for better splash damage while in my streaks

    2. Keep Commando Pro, but get rid of the completely asinine knife lunge. Let it only deminish fall damage, & maybe replace the knife lunge with a non annoying, op ability.

    3. Fix all the annoying invisible barriers from all the clutter scattered across the maps. Every time I play an Infinityward game, I always get stuck on objects which in turn, ruins the flow/killstreak.

    4. Maybe make some of the weapons that were completely useless a lil, tiny buff. Nothing too crazy though

    5. Remove the ability to recharge your noovtube stock with One Man Army. OMA, can stay in the game as long as it doesn’t let you regain noobtubes…

    6. Don’t change how Scavenger works with explosives. I see a lot of people complain about the ability to recharge your tactical & lethal slots, which is completely fine IMO.

    7. Add MW3’s Specialist Bonus?? Would love to see it in MW2…

    8. Add more color to the game. Let’s be honest, MW2 has a little color but it’s mostly brown, grey, & green just like MW3. (MW3 is more intense on the darker colors though)

    9. Please don’t nerf the Killstreaks. They’re completely fine as is…

      Points 1 and 9 tell me you really love the crazy splash damage on kill streaks. Too much could go wrong with nerfing killstreaks directly, so I’d opt to make killstreak kills not count towards your next streak. Your chopper gunner can still go ham, but you’ll need 11 gun kills to get it. Can’t have people getting predator missiles and 15 seconds later getting a chopper.

    These news sound great. I’m just curious to see how the Multiplayer will really be, like if it’s exactly as it was on the original game, e.g. 10XP points per kill most modes, just three standard killstreaks, same game modes etc …
    Also if the mechanics are exactly the same: in latest Cod titles, the aiming and the tossing of stun / frag grenades is much quicker, will be interesting to know whether they did improve that aspect or left it just they way it was. Either way I’m going to love it.
    Also, I hope they’ll be adding the 6 missing MP maps overtime through DLCs.
    From their description, it sounds like this Cod4 Remaster, the one we’ve been asking for ages now, will really perform beautifully.
    The very same game at its core, but with heavily revamped graphics / visual effects and sound, all updated to 2016. There couldn’t be anything better than this 🙂

Release those + CoD online and put the series to rest. Shift Treyarch, Infinity Ward, Sledgehammer Games, and Raven Software to work on other, potentially more profitable, IPs.

I live in Turkey and we have 2 seconds lag every online game since advanced warfare because of terrible netcodes and unfair matchmaking. No problem with old games or other games. Last week i played mw and mw2 on ps3, server netcodes/hitmarkers is amazing. Zero lag , everything is perfect about connection. So please dont touch the netcodes and matchmaking in mw remasterd. We cant play new call of duty games cause lag situation, mw remasterd is our last hope

    The purpose I’m writing this is because I fear that the developers will change the unique and good things that call of duty 4 MP had. All of this is IMO and I know a lot of COD4 players that loved the things I don’t want to be changed. I would like that the developers leave the game mechanics as it was before. Please do not change the map design, leave the map exploits and small glitches for the player to have advantage positions or shortcuts in the map, like for example that you could climb on almost every roof in Ambush map, the mattresses and soft spots where you could jump on without receiving falling damage, the old school invisible ledges, special parts in the map where you could use it as a hiding spot by doing a small glitch or jumping through various objects to get where you want to go. Leave the maps exactly as they were. Also like I mentioned before, don’t change the mechanics of the game, like for example, the unique and strategic prefire and prenade spots. Please “DON’T” put penalty for throwing the grenades early when the game start!!!, leave the bullet/wall penetration as it was, do not put invisible wall everywhere, leave the maps exactly as they were. Also I would like to see the option to manage both the game volume and music volume.
