Activision Publishing Inc. announced this morning that Call of Duty: WWII was the #1 selling console video game in North America in 2017, with the title surpassing over $1 billion in sell through revenue since the game launched on November 3.

As announced last week, Call of Duty is now the #1 selling game in North America for nine years in a row. Activision also says that Call of Duty: WWII is the best selling Call of Duty game on current generation consoles, beating out Call of Duty: Black Ops 3.

Activision also says that Call of Duty: WWII set a new Activision record as the biggest console digital launch in history for the company.

“Call of Duty: WWII is the #1 top grossing console game of the year in North America, and Destiny 2 is #2,” said Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision. “That means Call of Duty has been the #1 top grossing console gaming franchise in North America for a staggering nine years in a row, and worldwide eight out of the last nine years. Thank you to our players for your incredible passion and engagement. And thank you to our talented, committed teams all across the globe that make incredible results like this happen.”

First.. wow, it outdid Black Ops III, this is proof they don’t need a Black Ops IV in 2018. This game just needed more variety in it’s maps. Because I’d easily take the first Black Ops over CoD WW II. And World at War had a way better Campaign. So I’m just hoping they didn’t shoot the time period in the foot bcuz this game is fun, and I think it’s good but it doesn’t match the maps, killstreaks aren’t OP but fun as hell to use, or gun play in terms of recoil and handling from the older Cods doesn’t quite match. And the weapons don’t sound accurate besides a few, so I know they rushed this game. Bet Activision feels a little bit bad over the maps, bcuz they might have just ripped everybody off for the billion dollar sales.

Yea we definitely got less content with this game compared to black ops 3 do anybody agree

    • Alex Brogan

      I does agree

Great, they did it and are getting away with making a half assed game. Next time they’ll just make a lazier game with 5 terrible maps and bad gameplay. I think Treyarch and IW, to a lesser extent, pride themselves on making a full and playable game.

    • Elite Predator

No it won’t go too far like that dude. Because history will repeat itself and they know it’ll ram Cod to the dirt.

    • Eric Colden

      Better than Destiny 2

    • Alex King

IW was no where near finished. I think it’s just treyarch mate.

i guess it’s not fair to call you “minister of COD propaganda” since this and your countless other posts just like it are rooted in fact. i just hope the reason for posting these thinly-veiled commercials is because you’re being well compensated for doing so. otherwise, i wish they’d be far less frequent, perhaps replaced by a weekly opinion piece. those are always interesting to read and thus are actually rewarding to click on, as opposed to these eye roll inducers.

Actually this was interesting to learn. A game one month after launch deleted from my hdd surpassed Black Ops III, in sales in the same time period. That was a game I played for two years. So, it actually shows we don’t need successful names like Black Ops to outsell anymore. Just the title “WW II” drove sales for Activision. And hopefully we can finally get a new title from Treyarch that’s fresh and on a new engine. By that I mean a significant ground up reboot and not just an upgrade off the Black Ops engine. I’m just anticipated how this will pan out, and watching as this new iteration unravels.

      • I agree – I think this piece of news was worth sharing with the community, regardless of whether the website is paid by Activision or not. The only way that Activision and its developers will improve game quality is if they have an economic reason to do so… and obviously, they don’t.. at least not at this time. Their shareholders are going to be happy with the news, and the execs at Activision and SGH will get their big annual bonuses for probably meeting or exceeding targets (I assume they did… but obviously don’t know what their targets were). By pre-ordering (or just faithfully purchasing) the game every year, I know I’m part of the problem, and I struggle with that.

Safe to say this game sold on COD merit and BotG hype alone. Game ain’t terrible, but it isn’t good. Hell, it isn’t even the best cod of the gen, even with the advanced movement games splitting the player base.

    • Elite Predator

It sold more because the title was quite revealing world wide that it’s World War II.

      • Bonn Bo

You meant “quite appealing”, right? Typing on mobile’s the worst lol. But yeah, the WWII setting was another big factor, but the game itself is pretty mediocre. Hell, ghost is better than WWII in more ways than none, which is sad considering that game got shat on hardcore.

  • ccrows

IMO this just shows that COD should stick with boots forever, if COD WWII can beat out BO3…

    • Former

This was a shitty way to go back though. SHG dropped the ball hard.

    • GinsuVictim

But I doubt WWII will continue to have the constant population that BO3 has. Next year’s game is Treyarch, so it will be the one to finally bring BO3 down, but not before a huge uptick because of the hype.

With that kind of money you’d think they could find someone to fix the horrid hit detection.

    • crazyhunter

Or connection issues, or bugs honestly there is a lot of stuff they could do with the money

  • Eric Colden

Crazy to think back in the glory days 1 billion was like a 3 -5 day mark

  • Joey Castro

No One is stoked that they haven’t nuked the supply drops with stat based weapon variants that you can only get in supply drops . I gotta say that’s a record right or no ?(well not yet of course )

  • Gabriel Macys

“Best selling on current consoles” still means “Less than Black Ops 2”.
