15 Years of Call of Duty
Today marks the 15th birthday of the Call of Duty franchise…the first ever Call of Duty game released on PC on October 23, 2003 in North America, and started what is now one of the biggest entertainment franchises in the world.
Call of Duty is a $15 billion franchise, with a new Call of Duty title having been released every year since 2003. The first title started on PC then the franchise expanded to Xbox and PlayStation. The Call of Duty title that changed the franchise forever was Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, as it brought the franchise a new, fresh modern FPS look.
Call of Duty started with Infinity Ward, the original developers of the franchise. As the years went on, Call of Duty expanded to bring on Gray Matters, which is now Treyarch Studios. Treyarch’s first full standalone game was Call of Duty 3. In 2014, Activision expanded the series to a 3 year development cycle with Sledgehammer Games joining the rotation. The three studios have been switching off yearly since then.
The best selling Call of Duty title ever is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, with Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 right on its tail in lifetime sale count.
