Apex Legends devs may rework Crypto if his play rate gets worse
Crypto could be next in line to receive a rework for Season 9 after Apex Legends dev reveals they are watching his play rate closely.
Crypto is a very niche character in Apex Legends and it’s no surprise that his play rate may be lower than most of the other Legends.
Crypto was introduced in Season 3, along with World’s Edge after the hacker destroyed the beacon at Repulser on Kings Canyon. Crypto has a strong dislike towards the Syndicate, the group behind the Apex Games, joining the fight to get closer to the corrupt company.
His introduction was well received and even became a strong pick in Ranked Leagues, combining his ultimate Drone EMP with characters like Wraith and Octane to get in quickly after Crypto deals the shield damage.
During a podcast, live balance designer John Larson stated that Crypto had a low pick rate in Season 8, but a “healthy win rate,” putting him in an odd spot for a rework.
His pick rate is much lower than other Legends, sitting at 1.5% compared to fellow Survey Legend Bloodhound’s 14.3%, according to Apex legends Status.
Larson believes this is because of his Surveillance Drone, as it provokes a playstyle that many players aren’t necessarily too fond of. Most casual players want a character that keeps them in the fight and can be used aggressively, whereas Crypto is most useful when he is in the drone.
Unlike Bloodhound, for Crypto to be most effective he needs to be out of the fight, making him a tough character to master and also one that many players won’t have the motivation for.
Crypto is a character that once mastered, can be extremely useful, especially with good teammates who have the ability to take fights without a third always being there.
If Crypto’s play rate or win rate gets any lower, Larson revealed they will look into reworking him as a whole, much like Mirage and Lifeline.
