EA reveal Apex Legends underperformed financially in Season 17
Respawn EntertainmentIt seems like Apex Legends Season 17 has underperformed financially, according to EA, as revealed during their August 2023 earnings call.
Apex Legends Season 18 is almost upon players, promising exciting new content and a complete rework for Assault Legend Revenant, known as Revenant Reborn.
While Season 18 will no doubt bring an initial rise in player count thanks to new content and updates for the game, especially for the ranked system which players had become fed up with in Season 17, EA revealed the free-to-play battle royale’s financial performance failed to meet expectations in their August earnings call for investors.
Usually, Apex Legends is an outstanding performer for EA, however, Season 17 hasn’t been much of a success this time around, as Andrew Wilson, EA’s CEO, revealed that Season 17 “did not meet [EA’s] financial expectations.”
Despite continuing to maintain a healthy active monthly player count, unfortunately, Apex Legends Season 17’s “new variations of gameplay and monetization” did not work out, failing to meet the company’s targets.
However, EA did state that Season 17 was a good update in terms of growth and development, as the devs learned a lot about player retention and how they can improve things like the ranked mode, which will ultimately keep players coming back.
Further, EA will “continue to invest behind the talented team at Respawn to drive long-term expansion and growth of the franchise,” so Season 17’s underperformance isn’t a major cause for concern.
Apex Legends Season 18 launches on August 8, and the devs will hope that improvements from Season 17 will increase player spending habits when it comes to Collection Events, the in-game Store, and the Battle Pass.
