Baldur’s Gate 3: How to save Duke Ravengard & the Gondians
Larian StudiosIn Baldur’s Gate 3, saving Duke Ravengard and the Gondians is a difficult task that requires careful planning before taking action. You can find the prisoners in the Iron Throne in Act 3, but breaking them out is tricky. Here’s a step-by-step guide to save them.
Some Baldur’s Gate 3 quests seem to give you no choice but to move forward with the story. The main plot itself is played out in this manner, as you keep searching for a way to get rid of the Mind Flayer parasites. But some side quests also end up dragging on through all three Acts and get tied to the main plot.
Watch out, there are Baldur’s Gate 3 SPOILERS ahead.
One such quest is to save Duke Ravengard, which pops up in Act 1 at Waukeen’s Rest. Once you’ve dealt with the burning inn, you’ll soon find that the most important person there, Duke Ravengard, went missing. You’re tasked with rescuing him, and you soon learn that he’s also Wyll‘s father. You don’t see him until late into Act 2, and it’s in the final Act where you get the chance to save him.
Along with him, you can also help out the Gondian gnomes who are also being held captive. So here’s how you save Duke Ravengard alongside the Gondians in Baldur’s Gate 3.

How to find the Iron Throne in Baldur’s Gate 3
The Iron Throne is a location from the first Baldur’s Gate game and it’s where Gortash is keeping Duke Ravengard captive in Baldur’s Gate 3. You can only access this location with a submarine, so you’ll have to access the submarine dock. Here are the steps to do so:
- Locate and enter the Flymm’s Cargo warehouse.
- Find the hatch in the northwest corner of the room to enter the basement.
- Head straight and take the first left turn to reach the submarine dock.
Here, you can persuade Redhammer the Deviser to take you to the Iron Throne. When you arrive at the prison, you will get a message from Gortash who threatens to blow the place up if you don’t leave. As such, you’re on a timer here, and you’ll need to get out as many captives as you can before the prison explodes.
How to rescue Duke Ravengard in Baldur’s Gate 3
Once you get to the Iron Throne in Baldur’s Gate 3, you’ll get six turns to free the prisoners and get back to the dock before everything blows up. Saving Duke Ravengard is paramount if you want to continue Wyll’s questline. So here’s how you get him out:
- Go down the ladder into the main prison, then head east till you find three cells.
- Duke Ravengard is in the middle cell, which can be opened with a lever next to the door.
- You’ll also need to watch out for the Sahaguin that keep spawning in the area.
- If you accepted Mizora’s deal earlier, she’ll cast Freedom of Movement and Haste on the Duke, which makes this a bit easy. If you’ve already freed Wyll from Mizora, however, she’ll summon some explosive spiders to kill the Duke. Use Dimension Door or Misty Step to get him to the submarine.
How to save the Gondians in Baldur’s Gate 3
Apart from Duke Ravengard, the Iron Throne prisoners in Baldur’s Gate 3 also include the Gondians. They’re held in the other cells and you’ll have to break them out individually. This can be quite hard to do in under six turns, especially if you’re trying to save the Duke as well.
So, you’ll want to use your spells as much as possible, especially those that help with movement, like Fly, Misty Step, and Dimension Door. You’ll also need to use actions like Click Heels and Dash if available. Just like before, you need to keep the Sahaguin occupied while you rescue the prisoners.
Another prisoner you can rescue here in Baldur’s Gate 3 is Omeluum. He’s being held in the southeastern section, next to a flooded corridor. He’s the hardest to save since he’s quite far away, but he has a spell that can teleport him back to the submarine with one other character.
