The Baldur’s Gate games are well-known for revolutionizing the CRPG genre. With Baldur’s Gate 3, Larian Studios have paid homage to the original games by bringing back several of these characters.
Luckily, it is possible to meet all these characters in a single playthrough, and even recruit some of them as companions if you want. If you want to learn more about every returning character and their locations in Baldur’s Gate 3, here’s all you need to know.
All returning Forgotten Realms characters in Baldur’s Gate 3
Volo
Volothamp Geddarm, popularly known as Volo, makes his return in Baldur’s Gate 3 as an NPC. He is one of the most iconic characters from the Forgotten Realms setting. Volo is also the fictional author of the “Volo’s Guide” D&D lore-book series.
He makes brief cameos in Baldur’s Gate and Baldur’s Gate 2’s expansion Throne of Bhaal. In these games, he shows up in taverns near the start of each campaign. In Throne of Bhaal, Volo tells your character that he’s writing a novel based on the events of the games.
How to find Volo in Baldur’s Gate 3
Volo is found in the Druid Grove in Act 1 of Baldur’s Gate 3. When interacted with, he asks you a few questions and then states his plan of visiting the Goblin Camp. Later on, you can find him at the camp, being kept hostage by the goblins. If freed, he joins your camp and offers to try and remove your parasite.
This obviously doesn’t go well but Volo offers a replacement eye called ‘Volo’s Ersatz Eye’ that allows you to see invisible creatures. This is a good upgrade for Intelligence-based builds like Wizards and Sorcerers, as the distance at which you detect invisible creatures depends on your Intelligence stat.
Elminster
Elminster Aumar also returns in Baldur’s Gate 3 as an NPC. He is a popular character in the Forgotten Realms and is depicted as a powerful wizard who serves Mystra, the goddess of magic. Elminster, like his friend Volo, would occasionally pop up in the Baldur’s Gate games to check on your main character and offer advice.
How to find Elminster in Baldur’s Gate 3
You can find Elminster near the Mountain Pass in Act 1 of Baldur’s Gate 3. He joins your camp just to inform you that Mystra will pardon Gale if he blows himself up along with the Absolute cult on Moonrise Towers.
Jaheira
Jaheira, the iconic companion from Baldur’s Gate 1 and 2, makes a comeback in Baldur’s Gate 3 as a recruitable companion. The Half-Elf Druid is a member of the Harpers, a group that fights to uphold good over evil and maintain a balance between civilization and nature.
How to find Jaheira in Baldur’s Gate 3
You can find Jaheira defending the Last Light Inn in the Shadow-Cursed Lands when you move to Act 2 in Baldur’s Gate 3. She can be recruited as a companion after you finish her questline and defeat Ketheric Thorm near the end of the same Act.
Minsc & Boo
Minsc, one of the most popular characters in the Baldur’s Gate franchise, also returns in Baldur’s Gate 3 as a recruitable companion. He is accompanied by his miniature giant space hamster named Boo. They were both voluntarily petrified, which explains how they survived for so long.
How to find Minsc & Boo in Baldur’s Gate 3
Minsc is the last companion that you can recruit in Baldur’s Gate 3, which is why you’ll find him in Act 3. To recruit him, you need to have already acquired Jaheira as a companion. You have to then progress in her questline ‘The High Harper.’ Your first encounter with Minsc & Boo is at the Counting House Vault.
Viconia DeVir
Viconia Devir was a recruitable companion in Baldur’s Gate 1 and 2, but she returns only as an NPC in Baldur’s Gate 3. She is a female Drow who worships Shar and has become the Mother Superior of the cult of Shar.
How to find Viconia DeVir in Baldur’s Gate 3
You can Viconia DeVir at the House of Grief, Lower City, in Act 3 of Baldur’s Gate 3. She is involved in Shadowheart’s personal quest, ‘Daughter of Darkness,’ and can be killed or spared.
Sarevok
Sarevok Anchev returns in Baldur’s Gate 3 after being the main antagonist in Baldur’s Gate and a recruitable companion in Baldur’s Gate 2. He is a major antagonist in the latest game as well, but he’s associated with your unique Origin questline if you’re playing as The Dark Urge.
How to find Sarevok in Baldur’s Gate 3
You’ll find Sarevok at the Temple of Bhaal in Baldur’s Gate 3. The ‘Investigate the Murders’ questline in Act 3 leads to this location.
