Baldur’s Gate 3 devs hint at DLC plans: “We want to do more”
Larian StudiosBaldur’s Gate 3 devs Larian Studios have teased the possibility of DLCs for the game, admitting that they “want to do more” for it.
Baldur’s Gate 3 has seen historic success in 2023, surpassing Zelda Tears of the Kingdom as Metacritic’s highest-rated game and setting a new player record on Steam. The third installment of the classic RPG franchise, developed by CRPG specialists Larian Studios, is currently regarded as the gold standard for the subgenre.
The game contains countless hours of content, and very few players have managed to complete it. With so many builds to try out and so many outcomes, Baldur’s Gate 3 has a lot more to offer. Regardless, Baldur’s Gate 3 fans are eager to learn whether new DLC will be added to the game.
Fortunately for them, Larian Studios have hinted at potential DLCs being released in the near future.
Larian hints at DLC for Baldur’s Gate 3
Tom Butler, Senior Product Manager at Larian Studios, spoke with IGN at Gamescom 2023 about the possibility of DLCs. He explained that the PS5 launch is the team’s primary focus right now and they will work on fixing game bugs across all platforms after that, but said that DLC talks have taken place.
“We’ll carry on patching for a while and then we’re all going to take a holiday and then we’ll figure out what we do next,” Butler said. “But at the moment, we genuinely have discussions. We want to do more. We don’t know what yet.”
This implies that while there is a chance that Baldur’s Gate 3 will receive DLC, you shouldn’t get your hopes up just yet. If they do decide on a new expansion, it would be after the console releases and the team’s well-earned vacation. In addition to the PS5 release, an Xbox release is planned for 2023.
Larian haven’t explained what the DLC will be about, if and when they come out. Planning new content for a game this massive won’t be easy, and implementing it will be even harder.
Players have previously praised Baldur’s Gate 3 for having no microtransactions, so it’s unclear how they’ll incorporate DLC. A good example here is the Phantom Liberty expansion for Cyberpunk 2077. CD Projekt Red added free content with the Edgerunners update, but Phantom Liberty will be a paid DLC.
Larian may follow suit, or they may stick to their original stance for Baldur’s Gate 3 and release free DLC. In any case, there is currently no official information on the subject, so this is all just speculation. For now, you’ll just have to wait and see what happens with Baldur’s Gate 3. Fortunately, Larian shares the same enthusiasm as their fans when it comes to new content for the game.
