Baldur’s Gate 3 Honour Mode is traumatizing players: “My heart couldn’t take this”
Larian StudiosLarian Studios’ successful RPG has fans shocked with everything that can happen in the new difficulty setting added after Patch 5. Here’s what the Baldur’s Gate 3 community have been talking about.
Baldur’s Gate 3 features a party of very lovable companions, all of which will keep the player company while trying to figure out how to fight against the Mind Flayers’ tadpoles. That’s one of the reasons why users aren’t able to go through Honour Mode, which not only features improved enemies NPCs, but also added permadeath to every character that doesn’t make it through the battle.
And without being able to use more than one save slot, players are distraught by some of the failed rolls and heavy decisions they have to make. “…I am really not cut out to play in Honour mode. My heart could not take this,” commented user ‘Witch-for-hire’ in a post that describes what happens to Gale if players fail to rescue him from the portal.
“I can’t believe it. I am a Warlock and knew Arcana. I had advantage, yet I failed to pull Gale out of the portal. And then came the strength check- which I couldn’t hope to pass especially now that it had a disadvantage. ‘It will be fine,’ I thought. If I fail this, Shadowheart will try pull him out. But no,” described Redditor ‘ae54hae77r’.
Some players claimed that losing Gale was quite frequent, and theorized that someone at Larian Studios “hate him a lot.” “I mean, you’ve only got one opportunity to get him, and you have to pass at least one check, he’s easy to miss, and once you do have him you have so many opportunities to be brutally cruel to him for no reason at all. It’s ridiculous,” noted user ‘wish_to_conquer_pain.’
However, other Baldur’s Gate 3 fans think that it’s generally really easy to lose companions for good, especially in dialogue options like when Lae’zel uses the Zaith’Isk or when the main character has to choose between save or kill Mizora during Act 2. And the main problem is that even if players overcome the grief of losing a character, the members of the party also have disheartening reactions.
“I killed Mizora in Illithid trap forgetting it will also kill Wyll; not just killing him but also forever damning his soul. Karlach’s reaction made it the worst moment in the game for me yet,” described user ‘Tydeus2000.’
