Baldur’s Gate 3 fans admit that they have to stop hoarding items during their adventure in Faerun, but they aren’t convinced on how they can really use the dangerous “Soul Coins” while fighting the Mind Flayers. Here’s what the Baldur’s Gate 3 community said about them.

Baldur’s Gate 3 has a whole library dedicated to special items and scrolls that can be used to obtain powerful buffs and skills. While many fans decide to put them to good use during their adventure, some claim that they can’t seem to get the hype around Soul Coins, an item that’s highlighted as particularly helpful for Karlach, one of the most beloved companions.

Soul Coins are presented as scarce and mysterious items that can only be found in secret stashes or rewards in a few side-quests. According to Dungeons & Dragons tabletop, these are a form of currency in the Nine Hells, a place that Karlach manages to escape thanks to the Mind Flyers’ invasion.

Baldur’s Gate 3 players quickly find out that Karlach can use Soul Coins to get a damage boost from her Infernal Engine, although this might end up consuming her. Since the story is adamant about how dangerous and unique these items are, fans admit to instantly forgetting about them.

“I didn’t (use them) in my first run because I thought something bad would happen. Like, Karlach is overheating, what if using too many soul coins causes her to melt or something? Also, using them sounds kind evil?,” commented Reddit user ‘Gabby-Abeille’ in a post that rallied fans to answer “Does anyone use Soul Coins or am I just lazy?”

Many players agreed to hoard Soul Coins as they do with the rest of their items, thinking that they could be useful during Act 3. “Then finish the game with an unused pack full of them, because no matter how hard things got, I always convinced myself there could be an even harder fight just around the corner,” said user ‘Sir-Cellophane.’

Some fans think that the main problem with Soul Coins is that they are specifically highlighted during some of Karlach’s cutscenes and that Larian Studios lead players to believe that they are strictly related to Baldur’s Gate 3 main story.

Despite players claiming them to be “another item to hoard,” fans suggested that Soul Coins could have been used as a plot point during Karlach’s quests.

“Imagine if they dissipated built-up energy from her engine, but at the cost of the soul in the coin being lost forever. You get to choose between stabilizing Karlach who will likely go on to save a lot of people or the other option of having some way to revive the souls from the coins,” suggested Redditor ‘MechaPanther.’

Since Larian Studios hinted that Baldur’s Gate 3 might be having a DLC, some fans think that these kinds of items might become more relevant in the future. In the meantime, you can check for why fans are baffled by a major plot hole during Act 3 or why players want more Cleric deity options.
