Larian Studios’ Baldur’s Gate 3 is releasing in August, and as players eagerly await its launch, many are wondering about its compatibility with the Steam Deck. Here’s all you need to know about Baldur’s Gate 3 on Steam Deck.

The Baldur’s Gate franchise is very popular in the gaming community. The Dungeons & Dragons based RPG title has a special place in many gamers’ hearts and they are eager to get their hands on it when it releases in August 2023.

This new title will be compatible with different platforms and has been in Early Access since 2020. However, many players are wondering if and how it runs on the Steam Deck. Here’s what you need to know about Baldur’s Gate 3 on the Steam Deck.

Can you play Baldur’s Gate 3 on Steam Deck?

Yes, Baldur’s Gate 3 is playable on the Steam Deck. The official Steam listing has a “playable” badge under the Steam Deck compatibility section, meaning the game will run.

However, it might not be the most optimized game for handhelds, as Valve hasn’t labeled it “Verified” for Steam Deck.

Larian Studios did suggest earlier that they’re “working on it” and that “it’s not very far off.” Since then it seems improvements have been made to Baldur’s Gate 3’s performance on Steam Deck. As on Twitter, the head of publishing at Larian Studios described the performance of Balder’s Gate 3 on Steam Deck as “absolutely wild.”

Baldur’s Gate 3 will be available on macOS, Windows, and PlayStation 5.

The current Steam Deck version is limited to a stable 30 or 40FPS. If you want to improve it we recommend using FSR and 40HZ refresh rate to ensure the best performance.

The other main issue that is seemingly holding back the game’s “Verified for Steam Deck” status from Valve is the use of launcher and controller support. Larian Studios have confirmed that the game will support the controller at launch, but there are some questions that haven’t been fully answered.

Despite all that, you can still make Baldur’s Gate 3 work out of the box on Steam Deck via Proton and spare all the worries. Also, if you have a copy from Good Old Games, you should be able to play that too. This means you don’t have to worry about finding a compatibility layer that works.

We’ll keep an eye out for any updates regarding the Steam Deck version of Baldur’s Gate 3 and let you know as soon as there are any new details.
