BG3 players still confused by Gale and Mystra’s relationship due to one line

Gale projects Mystra in Baldur's Gate 3

Gale and Mystra’s relationship in Baldur’s Gate 3 has caused a lot of controversy among fans because of its less-than-ideal nature. This remains true, but now it seems that people have misunderstood a lot of it because of one or two lines from Gale.

Baldur’s Gate 3 doesn’t shy away from difficult topics, and Gale and Mystra’s relationship is one of the main ways you can see that.

Gale is a powerful Wizard, which catches the eye of anyone, but his involvement with Mystra – and the way their relationship ended – has always been a major talking point among fans.

Particularly, Baldur’s Gate 3 players have always understood that Mystra would have coerced Gale in some way to be in a relationship with her, especially considering her position as the Goddess of Magic and all Mages.

However, there is a particular line Gale says that makes it seem creepier for some fans: “I’m what one might call a Wizard prodigy, who from an early age could not only control the Weave, but compose it, much like a musician or poet.”

“Such was my skill that it earned the attention of the mother of magic herself. The Lady of Mysteries. The Goddess Mystra. She revealed herself to me and she became my teacher. In time, she became my muse, and later, even my lover.”

Mystra in Baldur's Gate 3
Mystra and Gale have a complicated relationship, to say the least.

Mystra dies in the Baldur’s Gate 3 universe, causing the start of the Spellplague where the Weave was in havoc. She came back to life around 1487, and the game takes place in 1492.

Gale also mentions that he met her not so long ago, and given that there are five years between the time she came back and the time where Baldur’s Gate 3 takes place, it’s possible that their relationship could have taken place in those years.

There’s more clarity needed to make any sweeping statements about Gale’s relationship with Mystra, but some fans truly believe he was coerced from when he was a child to be in the relationship because of how he mentions her being a teacher and his prodigal abilities from a young age.

This is particularly where his line comes in. He says this while he explains why he has the exploding orb in his chest, so he tends to go pretty far back in his story to paint a picture of why he made the choices he did. But, as we can see, he’s incredibly unclear about the timeline of his and Mystra’s relationship.

However, this same reason is why other players aren’t quite so convinced that Mystra was involved with him as a child. “Gale was a sexually active young adult in Faerun before he went to be with Mystra for a while. It’s an option to hear about after you sky-bang in the romance,” ‘stormlight82’ explained on Reddit.

Whichever theory you believe, though, I think it’s safe to assume we can all agree that their relationship was messy and unhealthy at best. Maybe at some point we’ll get a better idea of the timeline, but for now, all we can really do is speculate.
