How to start ‘Investigate Kagha’ in Baldur’s Gate 3
Baldur’s Gate 3’s Pale Oak Staff can be obtained through the ‘Investigate Kagha’ quest you receive once you explore Emerald Grove for the first time in Act 1. You can obtain this quest after speaking with her in Emerald Grove before rescuing Halsin.
One of the first big quests players need to complete in Baldur’s Gate 3 is to save (or destroy) Emerald Grove. The Grove can be found toward the North East of the map in Act 1, and is not easily missed if you walk around a bit.
Once you have gained access to the Grove, Zevlor will ask you to go speak with Kagha – the Archdruid in place of Halsin when he went missing. When you reach her, you find she is threatening a child with a snake. This doesn’t sit well with most players, and along with her hostile attitude, gives more than enough reason to think there is more going on than she is telling.
That instinct is, of course, correct. When you are done speaking with Kagha, head to the Servants’ Quarters room and look for a small hole in the wall toward the back. Climb up here, and you will find a chest named ‘Kagha’s Chest.’
If you have high enough stealth, you can pickpocket the key from her. Otherwise, you can lockpick the chest yourself. Inside you will find a note telling her to meet someone somewhere in the swamp, and the quest ‘Investigate Kagha’ will start.
How to get Pale Oak Staff in Baldur’s Gate 3
To get the Pale Oak Staff in Baldur’s Gate 3, you must make sure that Kagha stays alive in ‘Investigate Kagha.’
Once you have the note and you are ready, you can leave the Grove and head toward the swamp in the South. Depending on whether or not you have revealed the true nature of the area, it may still be a sunny wetland when you arrive.
The meeting place mentioned in the note does appear as a quest marker, so all you need to do is follow it. Once you reach the meeting point, you will find yourself battling some Wood Woads and their Mud Mephits. Get rid of them and you can move on toward your quest marker.
You will be led to a big tree stump in the middle of the area where you just fought the Wood Woads. Toward the south end of it, there is a crevice you must note with a passive perception check. Interact with it, and you will find another letter confirming Kagha is a Shadow Druid.
Return to the Grove to confront her. It is very important to make sure she does not die here if you want the Pale Oak Staff, so make sure you hit your checks to make her realize she has done something wrong. A cutscene will play revealing other Shadow Druids, and she will join you in the fight against them.
Once the fight is over, speak to Kagha again. If you are playing as a Druid, she will reward you with the Pale Oak Staff.
How to get Pale Oak Staff in Baldur’s Gate 3 if you aren’t a Druid
Baldur’s Gate 3 players who aren’t playing as Druids can get the Pale Oak Staff by changing their Class through Withers.
Withers allows you to change your Class for 100 gold. That means that you can change your Class for this quest if you would like to get the Pale Oak Staff. Once you have completed it, you can return to your original Class for another 100 gold.
The Pale Oak Staff gives the user the ability to cast Faithwarden’s Vines; a level 1 spell that makes an area difficult terrain and has the possibility of ensnaring anyone caught in them. It also makes it impossible for you to be ensnared yourself and vines do not count as difficult terrain for you.
