Baldur’s Gate 3 is notorious for putting players and their companions on the post with difficult choices to deal with. Each impactful choice can determine the future of your character and its relations with everything else in the title. One such encounter is when you meet Gandrel near the Hag’s lair.
Gandrel can be found near the Riverside Teahouse waypoint, which is west of the Sunlit Wetlands. You can always choose to save your game before making the decision to be safe if something goes wrong here.
Here’s everything you need to know about saving or killing Gandrel in Baldur’s Gate 3.
Who is Gandrel & what is he after in Baldur’s Gate 3?
Gandrel is a Gur monster hunter in Baldur’s Gate 3 who you’ll meet near the Riverside Teahouse waypoint, west of the Sunlit Wetlands. He is friendly to you when you strike up a conversation with him, and he reveals that he intends to capture a Vampire Spawn.
You’ll notice Astarion tense up if you pass a Perception check and you’ll understand why if you know what Astarion is. Even if you don’t, he’ll tell you that he has a strained relationship with Gurs. You’ll get more context if you meet Gandrel without Astarion in your party or if you choose Astarion as an Origin character.
You find out that Astarion was responsible for the kidnapping of a child from the Gurs during a raid. Every decision you make here will have an impact, either on Astarion (and your companions as a result) or on Gandrel and the Gurs.
All Baldur’s Gate 3 Gandrel outcomes
Here are all the possible outcomes from your conversation with Gandrel in Baldur’s Gate 3:
- Kill Gandrel: This is what you need to pick to keep Astarion alive and gain his approval. You’ll have to pick this to advance his companion quest ‘The Pale Elf.’ You can then loot Gandrel’s corpse to get Gandrel’s Aspiration, a two-handed heavy crossbow that gives you an advantage against Monstrosity-type enemies. Apart from this, you’ll also find a Dagger, a Supply Pack, Leather and Light Armor, an Arrow of Fire, an Arrow of Acid, and 2 Healing Potions.
- Don’t interrupt Astarion: This leads to Astarion killing Gandrel. You’ll also get the monster hunter’s loot.
- Hand Astarion over: If you already know about Astarion’s secret, you can choose to hand him over to Gandrel. This will remove him from your party for good.
- Interrupt Astarion and leave: If you haven’t revealed Astarion’s identity to Gandrel, you can just stop him from doing anything further and leave, but you’ll lose favor with him. However, this leaves both Astarion and Gandrel alive.
Should you spare or kill Gandrel in Baldur’s Gate 3?
You shouldn’t save Gandrel if you want to progress Astarion’s companion quest in Baldur’s Gate 3. You also get some unique loot if you kill him.
