Unexpected Baldur’s Gate 3 enemy could end your Honour run in Act 1

An Intellect Devourer in Baldur's Gate 3

When playing Honour Mode in Baldur’s Gate 3, it’s always easy to be more prepared for the bigger, badder enemies. There is one set of foes in Act 1 that could end it for you very quickly, though, even when you’re playing on a normal difficulty.

The Intellect Devourers on the beach of Act 1 in Baldur’s Gate 3 look unassuming and easy at first, especially considering how many of them you kill in the Nautiloid. But, for many players, including yours truly, they’re deadly

The fight is the first you come across just after you pick Shadowheart up after the Nautiloid crashes. When you follow the path, you can only see two Intellect Devourers, but it’s like a swarm of them appear out of nowhere when battle begins. It’s easy to get overwhelmed, and you can die very quickly.

It’s a little bit shocking, honestly, especially because of those less challenging fights in the Nautiloid. But, remember that in the prologue you had the help of Shadowheart and Lae’zel, and if you played your cards right, Us joins you as well.

Although it’s not the biggest deal to end your Honour Mode so early in the game, it can get really frustrating. In fact, it’s got to the point where a lot of players just decide to bypass the fight entirely until they level up or get Gale and Lae’zel in their party.

“You can skip that fight by jumping up the slope right of the entrance to the nautiloid and just go grab the other companions before you fight them,” one player advised in a Reddit thread

If you go there with just your player character and Shadowheart, you will be outnumbered, and you need to approach the situation with a little more strategy.

The easiest way to deal with the Intellect Devourers is to make use of the high ground in the area. The little brains struggle to reach you there, and their strength lies in how hard and quickly they hit.

Once you make it onto the high ground, make use of ranged attacks to knock them down – even if it goes a little slowly, depending on what class you’re playing, it’s worth it. Even so, the Intellect Devourers don’t have a lot of health, so it should be easy enough to whittle them down in no time.

You could even use the same jumping strategy you would to bypass the fight to get up there first thing and rain down chaos. Either way, make sure that you don’t just run in without giving the pending battle some thought – you might have to start all over again otherwise.
