Battlefield 2042 will feature cross-play & cross-progression, DICE confirms
DICE has officially confirmed that Battlefield 2042 will feature both cross-play and cross-progression, with consoles and PC getting the choice to opt out from playing together.
Cross-play has become the industry standard for blockbuster FPS games, with Call of Duty, Apex Legends, and Fortnite allowing players on almost any system to play together. With Battlefield 2042 set to be one of the biggest releases of the year, the question on every player’s mind is, will Battlefield have cross-play?
DICE has confirmed that, yes, Battlefield 2042 will feature both cross-play and cross-progression. In a recent briefing, Battlefield’s Senior Design Director, Dan Berlin, confirmed that cross-play is a “function we’re looking to build and test for Battlefield 2042.”
DICE is still in the process of designing cross-play for Battlefield 2042, with the feature set to be tested out for the first time in the Technical Playtest later this summer. In this closed playtest, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC will all be playing together in the game’s massive, dynamic maps.

With the feature being tested this summer, DICE has outlined what you can expect BF’s cross-play to look like at launch.
The following systems will be able to matchmake together:
- PC, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 consoles
- PC and console can opt-out from playing together
- Xbox One and PlayStation 4 consoles
This also confirms that Battlefield 2042 won’t feature forced cross-play, and players across console and PC will get the choice to only play with fellow console or PC players.
DICE also cleared up whether the two versions of BF2042 can matchmake. Battlefield 2042 will launch with two separate versions – one for PC and next-gen consoles and one for the Xbox One and PS4. Due to hardware limitations on the last-gen systems, that version of the game will be a smaller-scale 64 player version, and therefore cannot matchmake with PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5.
And finally, Battlefield 2042 will feature cross-progression and cross-commerce, so your progress and purchases “will be shared across all platforms and travel with you wherever you go.” The example they gave was that if you play on PS4, you can switch PC and keep everything that you unlocked, and vice versa.
