Treyarch has returned in Call of Duty: Vanguard to carry on their Zombies story, and we’ve put together a complete guide covering the best weapons and tips to ensure your survival in Der Anfang.
Treyarch delivered some of the franchise’s best-ever Zombies content in Black Ops Cold War with memorable experiences to be had playing Die Maschine, Firebase Z, Mauer der Toten, and Forsaken. Not only that, but they revolutionized the Zombies formula with the new variation – Outbreak.
Whereas Sledgehammer Games have developed Vanguard’s campaign and multiplayer, Treyarch has carried on with Zombies, and their newest creation – Der Anfang – is a curious combination of Outbreak and round-based Zombies.
This is why we’ve put together a handy guide that should assist you in your survival as you ascend to Der Anfang’s later rounds in Vanguard Zombies.
1. Best weapons to use in Vanguard’s Der Anfang Zombies
As usual, whilst most weapons are quite viable in one way or the other, certain ones are better suited to your purpose.
Here are the best weapons you should use in Der Anfang Zombies in CoD Vanguard.
A familiar weapon to most players we’re sure, the MP40 really came to prominence in Call of Duty: World at War, and the gun is still very powerful in Vanguard. As a consistent SMG, you can slap on bigger ammo clips and lay into an oncoming siege of Zombies with ease.
Take a look at our best MP40 loadout to use in Vanguard.
Accuracy is less of an issue in CoD Zombies, as is reload speed to an extent, meaning that a beastly LMG like the MG42 is a great option to use.
It comes with a hefty ammo belt as it is, and if you can make sure you upgrade your Demonic Frenzy Perk ASAP, then you should have no problem with hordes or Elite enemies.
The Hauer 77 and Gallo absolutely dominated in Cold War Zombies, and it looks like the Combat Shotgun is here to take the crown for Vanguard. It’s incredibly powerful and can one-hit early on before being Pack-A-Punched, plus, its fire rate is fairly decent as well.
2. Mystery Box
With Treyarch opting to remove wall buys from Call of Duty: Vanguard, this means there’s a greater emphasis on players making use of the Mystery Box to get new guns.
Sadly, there’s no Ray Gun or any Wonder Weapons to obtain at launch, but the game’s full arsenal of weapons is available in the random generator to select from.

The further you progress into the rounds, the better your chances of getting a high-rarity weapon to go with, or replace, your main weapon.
3. Upgrade key Perks first
Der Anfang has five different fountains for you to drink from, with each representing a different Perk that Zombies fans will be familiar with.
We feel that some are more important than others in Der Anfang, and it’s vital that you focus on them first. Each Perk can be obtained for free the first time round, but then you’ll have to cough up some Essence to upgrade it a further three more times.
We would personally concentrate on Diabolical Damage, Demonic Frenzy, and Fiendish Fortitude above all else. This will increase your Critical Hit Damage, vital if you love headshots, increase your reload speed, good for an LMG, and give you more health.
4. Keep moving – don’t get crowded!
Due to the nature of Der Anfang’s objective-based gameplay, you can end up in some tight areas in some of Vanguard’s multiplayer maps.
So quite simply, keep moving! Stay in one corner or one spot too long and you’ll eventually be crowded by Zombies, especially in later levels, as you try to collect runestones or guide the floating head.
5. Look out for chests and crystals
Every little helps and that’s why Treyarch has dropped some chests and crystals in the hub area for you to collect.
They won’t offer a life-changing amount of Essence, but they might drop you just enough to afford your next Pack-A-Punch upgrade or even drop a handy item like a Monkey Bomb for you to unleash on the undead.
These top tips and guns are great foundations to build a healthy run in Vanguard’s Der Anfang Zombies game mode.

Activision apologize for using artist’s design in now canceled Vanguard & Warzone skin
Activision have scrapped an unreleased Warzone and Vanguard skin after using an artist’s work without permission.
Activision admitted to the major misstep of using an artist’s work without permission. The original art was to feature in an upcoming Vanguard and Warzone skin that has since been axed.
Major content drops like new seasons or midseason updates deliver weapons, maps, and changes to Call of Duty games, but they also tend to bring brand-new skins to enjoy. Vanguard and Warzone have seen some noteworthy skins that certainly got players talking.
After all, who could forget the Armored Titan, or Godzilla and King Kong skins? At the start of Season 4 Reloaded, players also received a new Terminator crossover. However, teasers for Season 4 Reloaded also hinted at a mysterious wolf-like skin.
After the wolf skin was teased in an official Call of Duty blog post, it was later inexplicably removed and replaced from the very same post. It turns out, Activision used content that did not belong to them in order to create the aforementioned skin.
When the wolf skin was first teased, it certainly generated a ton of buzz, or rather raised a ton of eyebrows. The anthropomorphic Operator definitely sticks out in a WWII-era Call of Duty game. Nonetheless, fans were excited at the prospect of running around as a wolf in Warzone.
Unfortunately, that idea won’t come to fruition as Activision have confirmed that they completely removed the skin from their planned content drop for Season 4 Reloaded.
It seems Activision overstepping bounds is the reason behind the skin’s cancelation.
An artist claimed that the wolf skin, also known as Samoyed skin, was stolen without their permission. In a strange turn of events, Activision has issued an apology, seemingly confirming the artist’s claims.
In a statement, Activision admitted that they “regrettably erred in our process and have removed this imagery from the game,” apologizing for the misstep.
While fans may be disappointed to lose their chance at slaying in a furry wolf skin, most would agree that if the artist’s claims are legitimate, the greater injustice was corrected as nobody should have their work stolen without credit.

Warzone & Vanguard players claim Terminator bundle was a huge “missed opportunity”
Call of Duty fans are disappointed with Warzone and Vanguard’s Terminator skin as they feel a huge opportunity for the bundle was missed.
Two Terminator bundles made their way to Warzone and Vanguard at the start of Season 4 Reloaded, but players feel as though a huge opportunity to bridge the two franchises was missed.
The Call of Duty franchise is no stranger to pop culture collaborations that bring unique bundles and skins to their games. These exciting new skins never fail to generate hype amongst players, but sometimes it’s for the wrong reasons.
We’ve seen players react poorly to the Attack on Titan Levi skin, while the Godzilla and King Kong skins were met with positive reviews. The Terminator skins were the latest to hit Vanguard and Warzone, but players are now claiming that the Call of Duty team missed a major opportunity to celebrate the Terminator franchise.
The Terminator T-800 Mastercraft Ultra Operator Bundle comes with several items including an Operator modeled after Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Terminator character in the films.
It also comes with three weapon blueprints, but fans of the Terminator films believe that this is where the crossover fails to deliver. One Reddit user calls the bundle “the biggest missed opportunity” as they point out: “they could have given the FINN LMG a minigun mastercraft skin.”
Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Terminator famously operates a minigun and with the FiNN LMG in the game, players believed that a perfect opportunity to raise the authenticity of the collaboration was overlooked.
Ultimately, it seems like multiple players voiced their grievances with the bundles not pulling enough content from the movies. In addition to the minigun, Vanguard players were also disappointed to not see a version of the Winchester Model 1887 shotgun used in the films, especially when it’s used in his Highlight Intro.
As the OP puts it, there’s no excuse to overlook such a blatant addition as the “gun is even period correct.”
It remains to be seen if more unique collaborations are on the way in Vanguard and Warzone Season 5 after an Umbrella Academy crossover was leaked. It’s safe to assume that when popular franchises come together, expectations are high.
