Treyarch has officially released the new mid-season update for Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War on all platforms on January 14, which includes some new content and playlists.

The mid-season update for Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War arrived via a game settings update within the title on all platforms. No separate patch download is required.

This mid-season update features some new content and playlists in MP & Zombies. There does not appear to be anything major for Warzone, although the latest update for that went live on January 13 with DMR nerf and other fixes.

New Content

Here’s a look at the new content in each mode for players to jump into:

MULTIPLAYER:

  • New Fireteam map: Sanatorium
  • New Mode: Dropkick 6v6 –
    • This frantic game of nuclear hot potato features two teams each vying for control of a special and extremely important briefcase. The round begins with each team racing to the location of the nuclear briefcase and attempting to pick it up. Anyone grabbing the briefcase is automatically equipped with a powerful pistol, but it’s ideally up to the rest of the team to keep the briefcase-carrier safe. The team with the case gains access to launch codes, as well as an ever-increasing score for their team.
    • If you die while your team controls the briefcase, you will not respawn until your carrier has been eliminated and the briefcase has been dropped. If your team isn’t carrying the case, it must be flushed out and retrieved before it’s too late. Once one team reaches the score limit by controlling and owning the briefcase, orders to execute a nuclear strike are confirmed, and the round is won… in a highly explosive manner! The first team to 200 score wins.
  • New Melee Weapon: Wakizashi Sword

ZOMBIES:

  • New Mode: Cranked – A limited-time mode both literally and figuratively! Keep one eye on the countdown timer, and the other on your zombie-killing: spend too long without an undead takedown and you’ll explode! There’s no time to lose as your survival depends on frantic, terror-filled takedowns where the only respite is the Cranked power-up, granting a brief breather before the carnage continues.
  • PlayStation exclusive: Raid added to Onslaught playlist with new Dark Aether intel

Playlist Updates

And, as it’s a Thursday, Treyarch has updated the playlists in Black Ops Cold War MP to the following:

  • Dropkick
  • Raid + Crossroads Strike 24/7
  • Gunfight
  • Fireteam Dirty Bomb
  • Prop Hunt
  • Nuketown 24/7
  • Face Off

For those playing Warzone, here’s the new January 14 playlist update for that:

  • BR Quads, Trios, Duos
  • Buy Back Solos
  • Plunder Trios
  • Rebirth Island Mini Royale Solos
  • Rebirth Island Resurgence Quads

Season 4 will be expanding the weapon locker of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War and Warzone with some exciting new weapons for players to unlock and use in their battles, and we have everything you need to know to unlock the new Mace in Cold War and Warzone.

There have been plenty of new weapons added to Black Ops Cold War and Warzone over the past few months. Season 4 will be no different as players will have the ability to acquire a variety of new ones to use in their fights, such as the C58 Assault Rifle, MG 82 LMG, Nail Gun, and OTs 9 SMG.

One of these new weapons will be expanding the melee arsenal of both games in the form of the Mace, which will undoubtedly pack a punch whenever a player hits an enemy with it.

With this in mind, here is how you can unlock the Mace in both Cold War and Warzone.

How to unlock Mace in Cold War and Warzone

The Call of Duty community will find two different ways they will be able to unlock the Mace in Cold War and Warzone.

One of these ways is to complete a challenge that will unlock the base weapon for players to smash their enemies in either game.

You can find the unlock challenge for this new melee weapon below:

  • Black Ops Cold War Multiplayer/Warzone: Using a Melee weapon, get a kill while sliding in 15 different completed matches.
  • Black Ops Cold War Zombies: Using a Melee weapon, kill 50 Special or Elite enemies that are taunted by your Frenzied Guard

Players will also be able to unlock the Mace in Cold War and Warzone by purchasing a bundle from the in-game store for both games, which will grant you access to a blueprint that will allow you to use the weapon immediately.

How to get Mystic’s Scepter bundle Spellcaster Mace blueprint

Players can also automatically unlock the new melee weapon by acquiring the Spellcaster blueprint when they purchase the Mystic’s Scepter bundle in the store for Warzone and Black Ops Cold War for 1,300 COD points.

According to the official description of this melee weapon, it is “a weapon ill fit for the weak. Mace can inflict critical damage on command — no dice rolls needed on whether it can bludgeon your rivals in a single blow within Multiplayer.”

There is no doubt plenty of players will be doing their best to score some highlight moments with this melee weapon when it officially arrives in Season 4.

6 reasons why Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is much better than people think

Black Ops Cold War has divided players since its release, but here are 6 reasons why Treyarch’s shooter is better than it’s given credit for.

Published

on

black ops cold war front cover

A lack of maps and guns are a couple of reasons why Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War hasn’t been seen in a positive light. But we’ve compiled 6 reasons why players should reconsider these sentiments and appreciate what a good game Treyarch has made.

Call of Duty 4, Modern Warfare 2, Black Ops I – these are arguably the best Call of Duty games ever made. Any subsequent CoD title is measured against these games as they are considered standard-bearers in not only the franchise but FPS gaming in general.

Black Ops Cold War was admonished in the first few weeks of its release, but fast-forward to August 2020, and Treyarch’s 80s shooter deserves more praise than it gets.

The way in which video game content is presented has changed in the industry, and Cold War has been a shining example of this change. We’ve highlighted 6 reasons why Treyarch has taken advantage of this with Black Ops Cold War.

6. Black Ops Cold War has an incredible number of maps and counting

Heading into Cold War Season 5, the latest Call of Duty game has 20 6v6 maps, 7 Gunfight maps, 5 Fireteam / Outbreak maps, 3 round-based Zombies maps, and a sprawling, varied Dead Ops 3 map.

If you’re not keeping count, that’s an astonishing 37 different maps that Treyarch has created for Black Ops Cold War!

Not only that, but several of the 6v6 maps also have bigger versions of themselves for Combined Arms, and there are plenty more on the way.

Heading into Season 5, it’s reported that at least 12 more maps are still to come in the game, despite the fact we’re coming to the end of its year in the sun – with Call of Duty Vanguard 2021 on the way.

A leak has also suggested that Black Ops Cold War will go on to receive post-launch content, and will become the “most supported CoD title” ever.

Its initial content may have felt paltry to some, but thanks to the ability to add updates, players aren’t having to pay for map packs anymore, and are drip-fed new content to ensure extreme longevity in their purchase.

5. Cold War has a balanced meta with lots of guns to use

Unlike the different reigns of terror that Warzone has to contend with the DMR, AUG / M16, and AMAX meta, Cold War has had few complaints in that respect.

Yes, certain weapons have stood out more than others such as the Krig 6 or LC10, but there are more than enough viable options for players to use and experiment with.

From Assault Rifles to SMGs to even Sniper Rifles now, Black Ops Cold War has 50 different weapons to use in the game’s online portion of the game – discounting Zombies Wonder Weapons.

Even weapons that were underused in the earlier stages of the game’s life have become more potent such as the KSP 45, Milano, and Sniper Rifles in general. Whenever a weapon starts to feel too imbalanced like the FFAR or MP5 was, the devs are always quick on the case.

4. So many different ways to play Black Ops Cold War

Treyarch has tried to be meticulous about its content drops as dropping everything at once would lead to certain modes becoming obsolete rather quickly.

By spacing out the introduction of big game modes such as Gunfight and Gun Game, it has allowed each of them their time to shine in the sun.

New game modes are being added all the time with Capture The Flag being the newest one, and Die Hardpoint being a terrific example of Treyarch keeping up the creativity and chaos of Call of Duty!

Players certainly cannot complain about the wealth of game modes on offer in Cold War, meaning it should be very hard to get bored of the game’s multiplayer.

3. Outbreak & Zombies in General

mauer der toten zombies

As covered previously with the map packs, there was a time when extra Zombies maps were paid content that players would gravitate to in droves.

Now, it’s completely free, and maps like Mauer Der Toten continue to deliver exhilarating Zombies experiences with more Perks, more special weapons, and deep Easter Eggs.

Die Maschine, Firebase Z, Mauer Der Toten, and Dead Ops 3 aside, the real success story of Black Ops Cold War’s Zombies experience has been Outbreak. Whilst the concept of Zombies has remained largely the same for over 10 years and isn’t particularly fading, Outbreak offered a welcome shock to the system.

By making it more open-world and freeing, Outbreak has taken on a completely different structure. Its different objectives, side missions, and areas make it the most diverse Zombies experience in the game’s history – and it’s free.

2. Its campaign has gone unsung

russell adler in cold war campaign cutscene

There was a time when online multiplayer wasn’t really a thing, and the campaign was the predominant way of judging an FPS, console shooter.

Times have most certainly changed, and whilst other games are opting to leave out campaigns altogether, Call of Duty, with the exception of Black Ops IIII, is persistent in its goal to deliver compelling narratives.

Russell Adler is already one of the more interesting and memorable new characters that a Call of Duty campaign has produced in years. Cold War’s story may have retread some familiar ground with the original Black Ops games, but its twisty-turny developments made it engaging enough to be considered a solid campaign.

It had set-pieces, tense missions, cool puzzles, and culminated with a couple of pivotal moments that shaped how your story ended. Not only this, but Treyarch rewarded attentive fans by continuing this story into the game’s multiplayer and expanding upon it further.

1. Black Ops Cold War isn’t perfect, but no game is

operator firing gun in cold war jungle

Since the dawn of video games, they’ve had a bug or a glitch in them that has impacted the gameplay experience for the user.

Modern gaming is the most susceptible the industry has ever been to complacency and rash development. With most gamers having internet connections nowadays, it’s all too easy to release a game, and then add updates to it as the game goes on.

This has been standard practice since the PS3 and Xbox 360 were launched. Even some of the highest-rated games of all time use this method, and they remain successful.

Furthermore, Black Ops Cold War was arguably the most difficult release in the Call of Duty franchise, ever. Its development coincided with a worldwide pandemic that naturally would’ve affected the game’s planning and production.

woods in front of burning car in cold war

Given that Call of Duty is a yearly release, Treyarch was always going to be lagging behind in terms of content, game testing, and overall completeness. In the end, they have been able to catch up and have a game containing an obscene amount of content, whilst still listening to fans to try and fix the game.

Between Cold War’s campaign still being updated, round-based Zombies, Dead Ops, Outbreak, League Play, general online multiplayer, Treyarch has had to juggle a lot on their plate.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will probably not go down in the annals of the series’ storied history as a top 5 great. But the amount of hate and criticism the game has received hasn’t all been just and warranted.

The game is shaping up to be the most loaded CoD title ever and has to compete with the rip-roaring success of Call of Duty: Warzone. At the end of the day, we think Cold War could’ve been a far worse game given the circumstances, and it’s bounced back to become a solid game.

Warzone cheaters shamelessly flex highly requested Cold War Zombies camos

Warzone’s hacking troubles continue as cheaters have been able to unlock locked Cold War Zombies camos to use in Warzone Season 4.

Verdansk is currently being overrun by hackers sporting unreleased Black Ops Cold War Zombies Dark Aether camos in Warzone Season 4.

It was said by the devs that eventually Cold War’s Zombies camos would come to Call of Duty: Warzone at some point. It’s been quite a long time since the game’s release and none of its skins have turned up in Verdansk yet.

Thanks to the growing power of hackers in Warzone though, they have now arrived in unceremonious fashion. One Twitch user, and even JGOD, have provided evidence of the new Zombies camos running riot in Warzone.

The Twitch streamer goes by the name of Repullze, and they were mid-game with several buddies when they spectated the unusual happenings.

An enemy hacker was running around the map blindly firing with their gun to let the cheat do its usual thing.

But the oddity that was picked up on quite quickly was the skin that the weapon was sporting a DM Ultra Zombie camo that you simply cannot find in Warzone Season 4.

The clip, and stream, caught the attention of popular Call of Duty personality JGOD. He Tweeted out a picture of Repullze’s stream showing further evidence of the hacks.

The camo was different from the Twitch clip as it was now encrusted with diamonds, as was now clearly coated in the “Plague Diamond” Zombies camo.

Warzone continues to be a game played by thousands of players every single day, but there’s no doubt that the morale of the community is at an all-time low.

Lately, the game has been subjected to a God Mode hack, weird glitches allowing players to see through walls, and hackers even using their own custom skins in-game.

Between hacks, cheating, and glitches, Warzone Season 4 is proven to be a decidedly mixed experience.
