April is absolutely packed with new Black Ops 4 content for all platforms, and we’re kicking the month off with a bang in every mode. Whether you play MP, Blackout, Zombies, League Play, or everything in-between, it’s a damn good time to jump in. Let’s get into it.

BLACKOUT: New Alcatraz Map Arrives on PS4 + Free Access All Month Long

That’s right… Blackout’s got a brand-new map today on PS4, and it’s all-out close-quarters chaos on the prison island of Alcatraz. If you haven’t seen the trailer yet, do yourself a favor.

This is Blackout at its most frenetic, with close-up engagements in an all-new environment filled with deadly surprises around every corner. Ten squads of four drop in through portals above the island to fight for control, with up to five redeployments per player until the final circle… as long as one teammate survives.

A completely new map means new destinations, new strategies, and new ways to dominate the opposition. Snipers can pick off their enemies from two opposing towers and wingsuit over to nearby locations when things get too hot. Barricades, Razor Wire, and EMPs are more important than ever with tight corridors and narrow pathways to cover as the final circle closes in… and you might be interested in what the zombies are guarding in certain areas of the map.

Zombies fans familiar with “Mob of the Dead” and “Blood of the Dead” will want to explore the entirety of Alcatraz, now completely open with all-new areas to discover. You’ll also find plenty of Zombies-themed additions scattered throughout the map, including Wall Buys, jailed zombies sporting “Mob”-style prison uniforms, and a powerful Wonder Weapon new to Blackout lurking within the Mystery Box. Who knows what sorts of secrets are waiting to be uncovered?

Want to jump into Blackout for free? We’ve got you covered with Blackout’s new Free Access period on PS4, Xbox One, and PC today through April 30th! Get the team together, drop in, and loot up in Alcatraz and the main Blackout map all month long.

MULTIPLAYER: Barebones Now Live on All Platforms + Infected Next Week, Plus Arsenal Sandstorm and 3 New Black Ops Pass Maps in April

Barebones continues on PS4 and launch today on Xbox One and PC! Barebones brings an old-school feel to Black Ops 4, featuring 6v6 TDM/Domination playlists with no Specialist Weapons, Special Issue Equipment, Gear, or Operator Mods allowed. Equipment is also single-use and fully charges with each respawn, and we’ve disabled Spawn Select to get you into back into the match faster now that Tac-Deploy is restricted. Barebones has proven extremely popular in its first week, and we’re excited to see what players on all platforms think of this new way to play.

Next up, we’re planning to debut another fan-favorite Party Game: Infected! We’ve been having a blast with internal testing and currently plan to launch Infected during the week of April 9th for PS4 players. After that, we’re rolling out our free new Arsenal Sandstorm map as we prepare for the launch of three more new MP maps with our next Operation later this month. As a reminder, Black Ops Pass holders will receive a total of 12 new MP maps alongside our free alternate weather maps for all players, including Firing Range Night, Seaside Sunset, Contraband Hurricane, and Arsenal Sandstorm, with more to come.

LEAGUE PLAY: Weekly Events and Bonus Pools Now Live, Skill Divisions Up Next

Starting today on all platforms, League Play Events will transition from twice-weekly to single events that span the entirety of the week. This gives players more time to compete in each event and earn their bonuses before the next event starts. Speaking of which, the Bonus Pool has also moved over from the Daily Bonus to a week-long bonus pool. This allows players to earn their bonus points from a single pool during each event at their own pace, rather than trying to earn it all right up until the end of the event.

We’ve also added an additional penalty for intentional teamkilling in today’s update. Now, players who kill teammates 6 times will now be kicked from League Play matches. Play nice or pay the price.

Next week, we’re planning on rolling out Skill Divisions to reflect every player’s skill level within the World League Rank system. That’s right – the climb to Master Division is almost here. Stay tuned!

ZOMBIES: “Ancient Evil” + Server Pause & Splitscreen Pause

The latest chapter of the Chaos story has arrived with “Ancient Evil” in Zombies, now available on all platforms! Fight off new undead terrors and Greek mythical enemies as Scarlett, Diego, Bruno, and Shaw in the underground depths of Delphi. Our team has pulled out all the stops on every little twist and turn awaiting Scarlett and the crew in our latest episode, so please enjoy the new map and its secrets, and let us know what you think. The community’s reaction has been incredible throughout the first week, and we can’t wait to see what else the community can discover.

For the first time in Treyarch Zombies to date, Server Pause is now live on all platforms in Black Ops 4, allowing the host of any online private match to pause the game for all players simultaneously! This is a game-changer for those all-nighters where someone in the party inevitably needs a bathroom break at Round 49. Go forth and slay with full bladders! You’re in a safe place now. Splitscreen Pause is also now live for local splitscreen players on consoles who need to take a breather.

The new Zombshell Perk is also now available on all platforms, which offers a chance for zombies to explode when killed, leaving behind a contamination field that slows enemies and increases damage dealt to them. Five new Elixirs and two new Talismans have arrived in the Laboratory as well, including Suit Up, Dividend Yield, Talkin’ Bout Regeneration, Bullet Boost, Quacknarok, Glowing Phylactery, and Battered Dragon Scale. Check out the patch notes below to see what they can do.

Cold War leak suggests ‘Barebones’ mode from BO4 will return

A new Black Ops Cold War leak is pointing to the return of Barebones mode from the last game. Here’s what we know.

Published

Black Ops Cold War is slowly filling up with new content as its first season draws near. A new leak has hinted that some of that content is from Black Ops 4. The Barebones mode might be coming back, and here’s what we know so far.

Season 1 of Black Ops Cold War is just around the corner. When it arrives on December 10, we’re going to see some brand new maps, weapons, and other content. It seems that some of that new Call of Duty content will be Black Ops 4 related.

Some recent tweets from Call of Duty Leaks hinted that we’d see the return of fan-favorite multiplayer mode from Black Ops 4 as part of the post-launch update. This is referring to the Barebones mode that gained immense popularity among COD fans back in the day.

What is Barebones mode?

In normal Black Ops 4 multiplayer matches, you’d have to pick between Specialists and standard gear. Specialist soldiers had unique abilities that would make them powerhouses in battle. This would make the match feel unbalanced, so it didn’t go over well with fans.

The Barebones mode would even the game out by placing class restrictions on Specialists’ abilities. It would also remove gear, body armor and operator mods, and gear. Equipment would be limited to one use per life and no recharge. Manual healing and fog of war would be in place as well.

This mode was widely praised for making the matches feel like classic Call of Duty, so its potential return is bound to excite many Black Ops fans.

Is Barebones going to be in BOCW?

The leaker was rummaging through the BOCW’s game files and found a few references to Barebones there. Mainly, some audio files of the announcer speaking the mode’s name. You can hear it for yourself below:

If this mode made its return in Cold War Season 1, these restrictions would adapt to the new game. The changes would be minimal, and the Barebones experience would be similar to how it was in the last Black Ops game.

We haven’t heard about any other Black Ops 4 content making their return BOCW Season 1, but we might soon. Such news would ease the minds of fans who complained about the low number of multiplayer maps that were available at launch.

Since these are just leaks, it’s worth considering that the files might be leftover from when Specialists were in Black Ops Cold War. At this time, we haven’t heard anything official from Treyarch or Activision that confirms this information. Once we do, we’ll be sure to update you.

While a game is in the development process, developers often use assets from previous games as placeholder images. Until the game has been fully developed, they’ll add images from previous games to take up space until the new image can be inserted.

Some of these placeholder images have been appearing in Black Ops Cold War.

Reused assets

The Dual Wield attachment icon in Cold War appears as the Saug’s dual wield icon from Black Ops 4.

While hovering over weapons, the game can show weapons from Black Ops 4 instead. When u/Metoaga hovered over an M82 Sniper Rifle in the campaign, the image for it displayed BO4’s SDM Sniper Rifle. Also, while in Zombies, u/IronClooch69‘s RPD was displayed as the Hades Light Machine Gun from Black Ops 4.

Reddit user u/Lorenso0 reported getting Black Ops 4’s Prestige Master screen after completing a match of Free for All in Cold War. Other players confirmed they were also receiving the Prestige Master screen at around level 94.

Black Ops Cold War has seen multiple game-breaking bugs and crashes, such as the PlayStation 4 controller disconnecting. With those bugs, it’s likely that fixing reused assets appearing in Cold War will be far down on Treyarch’s agenda.

We will probably have to wait for the launch of Season 1 on December 10, where a large patch will be available to download.

How Nuketown has changed over the years

We take a look at Nuketown throughout the years.

Call of Duty revealed that classic map Nuketown will be coming to Black Ops Cold War on November 24.

Nuketown has been in every iteration of the Black Ops franchise and Cold War will be no different. It will feature a brand new version of Nuketown called Nuketown ’84. We’re taking a look at how the classic map has evolved throughout the years.

Call of Duty: Black Ops (2010)

Nuketown

Where it started. This small map started as a project by level designer Adam Hoggatt. It wasn’t intended to be in the full game but after playtests, it quickly became a favorite among the developers.

Inspired by the 2008 movie Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull, the map is designed to be a nuclear testing facility modeled after 1950s suburban America.

Nuketown is a small map, capitalizing on the popularity of Shipment in CoD 4: Modern Warfare (2007) and Rust in Modern Warfare 2 (2009). With its yellow school bus in the center and picket-fenced gardens, it instantly became one of CoD’s most memorable maps.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 (2012)

Nuketown 2025

Nuketown returned in the next installment of the Black Ops franchise. With the exact same layout, this updated version brought Nuketown to the 21st century.

Nuketown 2025 came as a pre-order bonus with Black Ops 2 but could also be purchased as DLC. This version of Nuketown swapped the classic 1950s look for a blend of retro 60s with Black Ops 2’s futuristic aesthetic.

This updated version fixed the spawn issues from the original Nuketown, leading to many believing this to be the best iteration.

Nuketown Zombies

Nuketown was also included in Black Ops 2’s Zombies mode. It was basically the original Nuketown map designed for Zombies.

This version of Nuketown is the aftermath of the nuclear bomb that goes off at the end of every Nuketown round.

In this version, the map has been damaged by the Nuclear Bomb and smoke and ash blotting out the sun. Zombies spawn in all the usual ways but the Pack-A-Punch and Perk-A-Cola machines spawn after killing certain numbers of zombies.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Declassified (2012)

Nukehouse

This is a version of Nuketown most will be unfamiliar with. Activision released a stripped-back version of Black Ops for the PS Vita called Black Ops Declassified. The single-player took place between the original Black Ops and Black Ops 2 and also included multiplayer.

A smaller version of Nuketown which only featured the yellow house and the truck on the street was included. This map was extremely small with players often spawning right next to each other.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 (2015)

Nuk3town

Black Ops 3 recreated Nuketown in a science-fiction style. With bright colors, futuristic cars, and digital confetti rising from the buses, this was a very different looking Nuketown. The layout of the map stayed much the same, however.

This map wasn’t available for the Xbox 360 or Playstation 3 as this game released during the transition between console generation.

Apart from the aesthetic changes, this version also had high walls to take advantage of ‘wall-running’ which was part of Call of Duty’s movement system at the time.

There were also Easter Eggs included in Nuk3town such as shooting mannequins in a certain sequence which would start a zombie-esque outbreak.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 (2018)

Nuketown 2018

Nuketown 2018 received a mixed reception. This version took on a Soviet aesthetic, being set in the winter with a muted color palette. Although less of a change compared to Nuk3town, players were underwhelmed by the map’s design.

The specialist abilities such as the Grapple Gun drastically altered the flow of the map. Players felt that Nuketown 2018 played too differently to the original.

An addition some liked was the RC-XD tunnel system, in which the remote car could be driven beneath the map past missile silos, and come out the other side.

Nuketown Island (Blackout)

Black Ops 4’s battle royale mode Blackout featured many classic Black Ops maps. Nuketown was included in a location of the map called Nuketown Island.

Nuketown Island includes the whole town that Nuketown is part of, taking heavy inspiration from the classic Nuketown map as well as Nuketown Zombies. The area is heavily damaged similar to how it is in Nuketown Zombies and contains the original cul-de-sac from Nuketown.

Brand new to Nuketown, the area has a nuclear bunker and tunnel system underneath that players can access.

Call of Duty Mobile (2019)

Call of Duty Mobile contains classic maps from both the Black Ops and Modern Warfare franchises and Nuketown is no exception.

This brought it back to the very original Nuketown map we had in Call of Duty Black Ops. Although played on mobile devices, the map plays much the same as it did in the very first Black Ops.

With Nuketown returning in Black Ops Cold War, expect it to have a 1980s theme.
