Modern Warfare 2 campaign leak has players worried over fan-favorite character’s fate
Dataminers have been sifting through Modern Warfare 2’s game files and claim to have discovered the name and locations of campaign missions, and one, in particular, has fans worried over a key character’s fate.
Modern Warfare 2’s beta is over, and the next time Call of Duty fans can play the game is during the campaign’s early access period on October 20. The campaign reunites players with Task Force 141 as they visit Mexico, Chicago, and other locations around the world.
Alongside the weapon camo challenges, Call of Duty dataminers have been sifting the game files and claim to have revealed the name, location, date, time, and characters involved in the campaign’s missions.
The leaks were shared to the GamingLeaksandRumours subreddit, and players immediately spotted a scary similarity between missions in 2009 and 2022’s Modern Warfare 2.
There are spoilers for 2009’s original Modern Warfare 2 and potential spoilers for Modern Warfare 2 (2022) here, so read on at your own risk.
In the leaked “Strike” mission you’ll reportedly play as Ghost, and its location has players particularly worried. Strike takes place in the fictional Urzikstan located in the Caucasus region, bordering Russia and Georgia. Loose Ends, the infamous mission where Shepherd famously betrays and murders Ghost and Roach in MW2, also takes place in the Caucasus region.
This would have Ghost in the same place he died in the original timeline, so players immediately that he’ll be betrayed and murdered by Shepherd all over again. “Ah sh*t, here we go again,” commented one Reddit user.
If players didn’t already think Ghost was doomed, there’s another mission called “Backstabbed” where players take control of Soap, so some believe this is another major hint towards Shepherd’s betrayal. One user simply said, “oh dear,” and another explained, “I ain’t ready.”
However, Backstabbed appears to take place in 2020, two years before Strike, so this might be a different betrayal assuming the dates are correct.
While this datamine gives dates and times for the missions, they don’t appear to be accurate. According to these dates, Soap is in both Chicago and Mexico on the same date at the same time, so it’s very unlikely that all of these dates are accurate unless there’s a branching story depending on player choice.
That’s not the only campaign detail that players have spotted, as villain Al-Asad is sporting a Shadow Company patch on his Warzone skin and they’re meant to be helping Task Force 141.
