Players are hoping that the highly anticipated sequel does not include past-gen compatibility, as they fear this could completely ruin the Warzone 2 experience for current-gen users.

The next Call of Duty era is right around the corner, and excitement for Warzone 2 and Modern Warfare 2 has begun to mount ahead of June 2022. Leaks have revealed several details of the battle royale sequel including a new interrogation system and a sneak peek at what the map could look like.

Despite the overwhelmingly positive reaction at this early stage, there are players who are wary of yet to be confirmed aspects of Warzone 2. One of these unknowns is the result of the game’s compatibility with past-gen consoles.

As it stands, there has not been confirmation concerning Warzone 2’s compatibility with past-gen consoles. While we know for sure that the game will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, past-gen compatibility has not been confirmed.

However, thanks to Vanguard in-game files, data miners discovered that Modern Warfare 2 will be available on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC. This reveal did not sit well with players who took to the Warzone subreddit to discuss the repercussions of a similar experience for Warzone 2.

The player who wrote the original post believes that the overall performance and quality of Warzone 2 could suffer if it has to cater to past-gen hardware. This player is worried that the same limitations holding the current iteration of Warzone back could also plague the sequel.

The comments proved that players were completely split on the issue. Some point to the shortage of current-gen consoles as a valid reason for making Warzone 2 accessible to all, “isolating people cause they don’t have new consoles is stupid and not enough people are on new gen consoles anyway.”

While others had less sympathy, stating that at a certain point developers need to move the overall experience to the next level, “once the new s*** comes out, you need the new console for the new experience and the better graphics etc.”

Early reports from renowned leaker Tom Henderson initially revealed that Warzone 2 would only release on current-gen consoles and PC, but he did not rule out the possibility of a separate version for past-gen players. This solution is similar to what the original post details, but we’ll have to wait for official confirmation from the devs to find out if this is even possible.
