Call of Duty: Vanguard Alpha Review – A promising start

The Call of Duty: Vanguard Alpha was open to all PlayStation players and delivered a lot of promise ahead of its November 2021 release.

The public got their first real taste of Call of Duty: Vanguard with Champion Hill in the free Alpha test. It was available to all PlayStation 4 and 5 users, and there was a lot to like about Sledgehammer Games’ newest project.

After months of rumors and leaks, Call of Duty: Vanguard was finally announced on August 19, 2021. It signaled the next chapter in the storied franchise and instead of a foray into more modern-day war or Vietnam, the game is instead going back to its World War II roots.

Sledgehammer continues to polish the next entry into the legendary CoD franchise, and the devs announced an Alpha test phase would take place exclusively for PlayStation gamers.

We were able to get hands-on with this exciting first chunk of playable Vanguard, and we’ll dissect what we loved about the game so far.

The Champion that Vanguard needs

The Vanguard Alpha sadly had no customization options for clan tags, calling cards, etc, and only had one mode, but, thankfully, it was the brand new Champion Hill mode. A combination of Counter-Strike, Apex Legends’ Arenas, and Warzone, Champion Hill is a deep game mode.

We played several hours of it, and it was more than able to sustain our interest. Wins are most definitely possible, and dubs give you a great feeling of euphoria.

From the first match to the last, Champion Hill is several small games of Call of Duty with lots of strategy and teamwork required.

Old dog, new tricks

Breakable cover is nothing new in first-person shooter games but with competitors such as Battlefield 2042 emphasizing destruction, Call of Duty has decided to step up.

Each of the maps contained a multitude of vulnerable doors, walls, and surfaces. Meaning you can’t always just hide behind something and expect it to protect you now.

Although it wasn’t too thrilling on one map where we spawned and were immediately shot from the other side of the map through a wall. We also had multiple instances of killing a player, and them spawning right near us and killing us very quickly. So spawn points definitely need to be looked at and addressed before the beta phase.

Another slight issue with the 2v2 format is that there was quite a lot of camping, even in smaller maps. There were multiple instances of the enemy team lying prone at the back of the map, especially when they had a much inferior life count.

Whilst you are technically penalized for non-aggressive play by not winning matches and obtaining cash as a result, it still feels like there needs to be a way to force players to compete and not hide.

Nevertheless, destructible cover is welcome, wall-mounting adds an extra dimension and can be effective if used right and the jury is still out on the new blind-fire mechanic.

Variety is the spice of life

Despite some camping and more run-ins with SBMM, there’s so much to consider during the course of a full game of Champion Hill.

Do you focus all your money on upgrading your BAR or STG-44? Do you try to collect Perks? Do you focus on buying extra lives? Or do you try and save up an obscene amount of money to earn a game-ending V2 Rocket?

Even the maps themselves have an extra life in each one, leading to unreal dilemmas of whether you should gamble to get it or not.

Maps do possess a decent bit of personality, despite being quite similar in some respects. One is Airstrip, a literal giant airstrip with bunkers and watchtowers, and another is Market, and it’s filled with stalls and cover.

Beautiful battles

Our experience was on a 4K HDR TV on a PS5, so we can’t say how the PS4 version fares. However, PlayStation’s newest beast is capable of making Vanguard a dream to look at.

Call of Duty continues to excel in its ability to have hyper-realistic lighting and does so by returning to the Modern Warfare engine once more. The way dust particles fly up and stream across your screen is breathtaking.

Explosions look spectacular and the way in which they affect the environment feels spot-on. The audio feels pretty good, but we have found that footsteps can be inconsistent, with no sound coming through until the last second.


In Conclusion

The Call of Duty: Vanguard Alpha bodes well for the game’s beta testing and eventual release. Champion Hill looks like another winner, and it has more maps to come in the future as well to flesh the experience out.

Given that this is very much an Alpha, there was always going to be an issue or two. Spawn points and audio mix irregularities are two things that can be cleaned up, and Sledgehammer has already confirmed some fixes.

The rest of the Alpha and Champion Hill as a whole is a lot of fun, and we look forward to seeing what Sledgehammer Games has in store for the Vanguard beta!

Crazy Vanguard glitch lets players levitate above the map

Since launch, several glitches and bugs have been discovered in Vanguard. One of them takes players soaring into the sky.

The return of an iconic Call of Duty glitch is giving Vanguard players a broken line of sight on enemies as they take to the sky.

Vanguard hasn’t felt like the smoothest gaming experience since its launch on November 5. Players have been quick to discover some game-breaking exploits that make Vanguard nearly unplayable. Although most issues have been addressed through recent patches, some still remain.

One of the issues yet to be fixed is the elevator glitch. After popping up weeks ago, its relevance diminished as other glitches came to prominence. However, this new clip showing the advantageous position players can get themselves in has renewed interest in the glitch.

This particular glitch traces its roots back to Modern Warfare 2. The glitch sees players ascend straight up into the sky emulating an elevator, hence the glitch’s name. There’s no doubt the devs are going to have a look at something this game-breaking.

As the player ascends, their view of the map changes to a top-down perspective. This gives players a clear view of all of the areas on the map including enemy players stomping around.

In the past, we’ve seen this glitch occur on the Oasis map as well as Sub Pens. Recently it has also popped up on close-quarters map Decoy. Odds are this glitch is accessible on just about every Vanguard map.

This clip perfectly explores the incredible advantage someone gains after rising to the sky. The player is equipped with a Sniper Rifle making long-range kills supremely easy to earn. In addition, the small nature of the map means that this player can practically see every enemy player who isn’t in a building.

To make matters worse, they are playing Search & Destroy. This makes the high ground advantage more impactful. With one life per round, players cannot respawn and eliminate the player in the sky. There probably has never been an easier way to guard S&D bomb sites.

With Vanguard Season 1 around the corner, Sledgehammer must be working hard to ensure a smooth rollout. Given the mixed player reaction to in-game issues since launch, a lot is riding on the success of Season 1.

There’s no doubt that Vanguard players will receive a major patch addressing the current glitches running rampant.

Vanguard Zombies players extremely disappointed with lack of Season 1 content

Fans of the popular Zombies game mode are furious with the underwhelming additions coming to Vanguard in Season 1.

Time and time again Zombies players feel as though their favorite game mode is receiving the short end of the stick. The lack of planned content announced for Season 1 has left them feeling disappointed.

The Call of Duty devs released a ton of information on what players should expect with the launch of Vanguard Season 1 and Warzone: Pacific Caldera. To the dismay of Zombies players, little to no information concerning the game mode was included in the report.

Given the size of the announcement Zombies players were bewildered at not getting new information. They feel that the tendency to ignore the Zombies game mode is becoming somewhat of a recurring theme.

Vanguard Zombies Season 1 content

While the Call of Duty blog post detailed several new additions coming to Vanguard and Warzone, it mentions practically nothing about Zombies. There are one or two tidbits across the blog post that promise “Zombies content” without ever going into detail on what that might entail.

With how disappointed Zombies players were at Vanguard’s launch, some red flags have appeared from the blog post. They had high hopes of receiving major content in Season 1 given how hollow Zombies has been. Many believe the silence regarding Zombies is a very bad thing.

With no new information to digest, Zombies players have to rely on previously announced content to give them comfort. The devs have already promised a dedicated pause feature, the addition of scorestreaks, 1-2 objectives, and new covenants.

Receiving these minor additions in Season 1 is hardly going to satisfy the Zombies community. This is especially true considering Zombies players felt like they required some of these features at launch.

Players have even started mocking the Vanguard Zombies content by comparing it with Black Ops 3’s superior Zombies experience.

With Season 1 not likely to improve the Zombies experience in Vanguard, players will have to hope that Season 2 and beyond will be kinder to them.

Vanguard players demand fix to ‘game-breaking’ Dead Drop glitch

Call of Duty: Vanguard players are sick of the ‘game-breaking’ Dead Drop glitch, and are begging to devs to fix it quickly.

Call of Duty: Vanguard’s Dead Drop glitch allows players to keep deploying high Killstreaks, and frustrated players are calling for the ‘game-breaking’ exploit to be removed.

Vanguard has been praised as one of the smoothest CoD launches ever, but a few bugs and glitches have got in the way. The Combat Pacing filter still doesn’t work properly and a player’s dog even turned on them. However, it’s the Dead Drop glitch that has players most frustrated.

This allows players to maintain their high killstreak after dying, causing games to be plagued with Attack Dogs and Bombing Runs. Fed-up players are demanding that Sledgehammer Games fix the issue as soon as possible.

Dead Drop is a Field Upgrade in Vanguard that allows players to maintain their Killstreak after dying. However, it’s not working as intended, with players being able to repeatedly call in the same streak.

The Call of Duty: Vanguard subreddit has been chock-full of players calling out the devs for the Dead Drop glitch still being in the game.

One post was particularly critical, saying that “it’s ruining the game.” The OP claims that the Dead Drop glitch “happens every other game” even though “the problem has been known about for weeks.”

Another user acknowledged that the devs have been on holiday, but said that the “Dead Drop bug is game breaking” and that Sledgehammer “should have addressed this by now.” They also brought up that there’s no mention of it on the official Trello board of known bugs and issues.

With the community complaining about the glitch so widely, it’s likely that it’s on Sledgehammer Games’ radar They were quick to patch out the unlimited armor glitch, so there should be a fix incoming.

There’s no guarantee when it will be fixed, but Season 1 launches on December 8, which will bring a host of changes to the Vanguard. Be sure to stay tuned to CharlieINTEL for the full patch notes.
