Call of Duty players couldn’t wait to jump into the H2 Multiplayer MW2 mod but a day before its August 16 launch, the project was shut down by Activision. Players have been furious and begged the publisher to reconsider.

Although Black Ops 6’s beta kicks off on August 30, all eyes have been on H2 Multiplayer. This mod for Modern Warfare Remastered brought over all of the original Modern Warfare 2’s content alongside welcome improvements.

Modern Warfare Remastered even shot up into Steam’s top sellers in anticipation of the mod but on August 15, the developers announced they received a cease-and-desist order from Activision. “We are complying with this order and shutting down all operations immediately and permanently,” they said.

The community rallied in support of the mod developers, calling out Activision but taking particular issue with the timing of it. Many accused them of letting Modern Warfare Remastered sales skyrocket before taking action.

“Wait until they rake in the money from everyone buying remastered just for this, then shut ‘em down,” tweeted CoD stats expert TrueGameData.

“Activision knew this project was in development for years and didn’t cease and desist them then and instead waited till a day before launch to do this,” said well-known leaker TheGhostofHope. “F**king insanely evil.”

Others, like streamer TimTheTatman, begged them to reconsider: “Please please PLEASE don’t do this [Activision].”

FaZe Clan members, who made their fame in games like the original Modern Warfare 2, echoed the calls. “This is harmless fun and community building. Something we feel Call of Duty desperately needs,” tweeted founder and CEO FaZe Banks. “Please do the right thing and let the kids play their game.”

FaZe Jev, who had been playing the game early, was more accepting of the situation but said in an August 15 video, “Just because that’s how things are doesn’t mean that it makes it right. I think they’re wrong for this, I think this is super underhanded, I think it’s incredibly greedy.”

Content creators and high-profile community members weren’t the only ones to call out Activision, with X (formerly Twitter) and Reddit ablaze with similar comments. Not only that, Modern Warfare Remastered reviews are now “Overwhelmingly Negative” on Steam.

If you purchased Modern Warfare Remasted to play the H2 Multiplayer mod, you can refund it if you’ve played less than two hours of the game. Despite these demands, it’s unlikely that Activision will budge on the decision.
