How big is Area 99 map in Warzone? Size compared to Rebirth Island, Verdansk & more
ActivisionWe finally got our first in-depth look at Warzone’s new map, Area 99, at CoD Next ahead of its arrival in Black Ops 6 Season 1, but you might be wondering how big it is compared to the game’s other maps.
The latest Resurgence map dives into the backstory of Nuketown, one of the most well-known locations in the entire Call of Duty series. It features many POIs, such as Nuketown Shipping and Mannequin Assembly, but players have already expressed concerns about the scale of it.
So, here’s everything we know about the size of Area 99 and how it compares to other Warzone maps.
Area 99 map size in Warzone
Area 99 will be roughly the same size as Rebirth Island, as confirmed by the devs during the CoD Next livestream. While we don’t have an exact number, it will be “very similar” to the estimated 152,865 m² of the OG Resurgence map.
Resurgence is all about dropping players into the action straight away without long stretches between fights, so these maps are always more compact than the main BR battlegrounds. Lead Level Designer, Brittant Beildleman, said that the aim of Area 99 was to bring the “fast and frenetic” gameplay of Nuketown to Warzone, which also explains the smaller size.
That being said, while the surface is very similar in scale to Rebirth, the new map also has a lot of tall buildings for extra verticality. Plus, the Reactor in the middle goes deep into the ground and leads to a network of tunnels, so it appears to be quite dense despite the tiny area.
How big is Area 99 compared to other Warzone maps?
- Al Mazrah (7,095,838 m²)
- Caldera (6,405,025 m²)
- Verdansk (5,835,157 m²)
- Urzikstan (5,676,670 m²)
- Vondel (2,457,056 m²)
- Fortune’s Keep (240,790 m²)
- Ashika Island (222,002 m²)
- Area 99 (TBC)
- Rebirth Island (152,865 m²)
Based on map size estimations from Warzone expert JGOD, Area 99 could either be the smallest or second-smallest map in the game to date. Rebirth Island is currently the smallest, so given that the new map is said to be virtually identical in size, it could find itself one spot higher or lower when it arrives.
We don’t expect it to come anywhere close to fellow Resurgence maps Ashika Island, Fortune’s Keep, and Vondel, as these are significantly bigger than Rebirth. Especially Vondel, which is the largest Resurgence map of all time and feels more like a compact Battle Royale arena.
It’ll also be nowhere near the scale of maps like Verdansk, Al Mazrah, or Urzikstan, as these are designed to be a completely different experience. While Resurgence is all about fast-paced action, BR has to leave space for many players in each match and offer room to breathe between fights.
It’s worth noting that the devs have never officially released the sizes of every map, so the areas listed above are rough estimations. However, we can use them to get a good idea of how big Area 99 will be.
This new map isn’t the only addition coming to Warzone with Black Ops 6, as the update is set to bring a host of quality-of-life changes and scrap the backpack looting mechanic.
