How many Black Ops games are there? BO6 title explained
ActivisionCall of Duty: Black Ops 6 arrives in 2024 but without a Black Ops 5, you might wonder how each game relates to the franchise. Here’s how many Black Ops games there are, and why 2024’s game is called BO6.
It’s been known for some time that Call of Duty 2024 will be the next Black Ops game but the exact title was never locked in. “Black Ops Gulf War” was floated around for a while, then it was expected to be called “Black Ops V” after players pieced together an initial teaser.
Then, the Sally Blueprint added to Warzone made “Black Ops 6” the most likely. Activision confirmed the BO6 title on May 23 but it’s left some players wondering why it isn’t called Black Ops 5. Here’s how many Black Ops games there are, and why CoD 2024 is Black Ops 6.
How many Call of Duty: Black Ops games are there?
There are six mainline Black Ops games including 2024’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 6.
If you count Call of Duty: Black Ops DS for the Nintendo DS and Black Ops: Declassified for the PlayStation Vita, then there are actually eight Black Ops games. Of course, these handheld spin-offs aren’t counted in the official lineup.
Why is CoD 2024 called Black Ops 6?
Despite 2020’s Black Ops Cold War not being called “Black Ops 5,” Activision and Treyarch consider it the fifth Black Ops game. So, although there isn’t an official “Black Ops 5,” Black Ops 6 is the sixth mainline game in the sub-franchise.
