How to fix packet burst in Black Ops 6 beta
ActivisionThousands of players have hopped into the Black Ops 6 beta, but packet burst has disrupted the experience for many on both PC and console.
Fans have been eager to hop into Treyarch’s new multiplayer and try out the new movement, guns, and Perks. However, the community has reported plenty of lagging and stuttering during the first weekend, which has made the whole experience less smooth than initially hoped.
Here’s everything you can do to fix packet burst in Black Ops 6.
How to fix Black Ops 6 packet burst
Check server status
The first step should always be to check the Black Ops 6 server status, to make sure that the game is online and working as intended. You can do this by heading to the official Activision support page, or by checking out the Call of Duty Updates X page.
If the devs have confirmed that they’re running into server issues, then the problem is likely at their end and you simply need to wait for the issue to be resolved.
Switch to ethernet connection
Packet burst is more common when using a wi-fi connection, so we recommend swapping to wired internet if possible. Not only will this boost your connection speeds overall, but it’ll also make your matches much more stable and reduce the risk of issues like this one.
Disable crossplay
Leaving crossplay enabled can lead to packet burst in Black Ops 6, so consider switching it off if you don’t absolutely need it to play with friends. You can do this by:
- Opening CoD HQ.
- Enter the Black Ops 6 beta.
- Head into the ‘Settings’ menu by clicking the cog icon.
- Select ‘Account & Network.’
- Set ‘Crossplay’ and ‘Crossplay Communication’ to ‘Off.’
This means you’ll no longer be able to join lobbies with friends on different platforms, but it could make your matches much smoother in return.
Restart Shaders Pre-Loading
PC players have reported that forcing shader pre-loading to reset can provide a pretty instant fix for packet loss in bO6. All you have to do is:
- Go into your Black Ops 6 settings.
- Select ‘Graphics.’
- Under ‘Display,’ you’ll see the option for ‘Restart Shaders Pre-Loading.’
- Click this then restart your game.
Selecting this option clears your shaders cache and can reduce the amount VRAM used when loading each map. Unfortunately, only PC players can use this trick, but those who have tried it have noticed drastic results.
Restart your router
If the first two options don’t work, it might be time to restart your router to reset the internet connection. While it may seem basic, doing something as simple as this has been known to resolve plenty of issues in multiplayer games.
Wait for an update
As mentioned earlier, packet burst has been rampant since the Black Ops 6 beta went live across all platforms, which seems to suggest that issue is with the servers. If this is true, the devs are likely working on a fix to solve the problem.
With any luck, this will be rolled out in time for the start of the second beta weekend on September 6, although the devs are yet to officially address the problem.
What is packet burst?
Put simply, packet burst is when data traveling between your device and the Black Ops 6 server fails to reach its destination. This results in brief moments of stuttering and lag, delayed responses to your inputs, and, in the worst cases, even disconnections from the match.
You’ll know if you’re suffering from packet loss when an orange symbol with three orange squares appears on the left-hand side of your screen.
Hopefully, these solutions have fixed all our issues in Black Ops 6 and you can get back to leveling up the best guns in the game, like the XM4 or Jackal PDW.
