During 2023’s Gamescom event, Sledgehammer Games have revealed Operation 627, the first Modern Warfare 3 campaign mission. This campaign level places you in the shoes of Makarov’s forces, rescuing him from Verdansk’s Prison.

The event was graced by the presence of Sledgehammer Games’ Creative Director, David Swenson, and Narrative Designer, Shelby Carlton, who shared the stage with host Geoff Keighley to present various details and also the first look at the campaign.

They took the opportunity to introduce a brand-new feature in the MW3 campaign named Open Combat missions. These missions stand out as semi-open world levels set in expansive environments, where players can exercise their freedom to approach and accomplish the mission as they see fit.

Furthermore, the event unveiled a sneak peek into the initial stage of the Modern Warfare 3 campaign, referred to as Operation 627. This level brings players back to a cherished point of interest from Warzone’s original Verdansk map: Prison.

Modern Warfare 3’s campaign takes you back to Verdansk’s Gulag.

As the featured campaign gameplay unfolds, players will start at a submarine at nighttime and subsequently ascend the Prison. Once inside, utilizing night vision goggles, players will undertake a stealthy approach, quietly dispatching guards with silenced weapons.

Upon infiltrating, the gameplay evolves into a riot scene, resulting in the elimination of both inmates and guards as players progress downwards into the lower depths of the Gulag. Eventually, as they reach the core of the prison, they approach a locked cell, hinting at the possibility that it holds Makarov. However, the showcase concludes just before this revelation is made clear.

All in all, that’s everything revealed with the first look at the Modern Warfare 3 campaign mission Operation 627 showcased at the Gamescom Opening Night Live event.
