Modern Warfare 3 fans furious as leak reveals change to classic MW2 maps
ActivisionIt’s been confirmed that Modern Warfare 3 will launch with all 16 of the original maps from MW2 (2009), fully remastered for the new game. However, leaks have revealed one significant change to the maps and players aren’t impressed.
Modern Warfare 3 launches on November 10, 2023, and so far the community has been impressed with what it’s seen. The follow-up to MW2 (2022) is bringing back a host of fan-favorite features, such as slide canceling and the old-school minimap.
It’s also introducing new features to the Modern Warfare series, such as a Zombies mode, but it’s the return of classic maps that has players most excited. The devs confirmed that all 16 MW2 (2009) maps will appear in Modern Warfare 3 at launch, marking the return of some true favorites.
However, leaks have hinted that these beloved maps won’t show up exactly the same as they were 14 years ago, leaving many players frustrated. CoD leaker ‘TheMW2Ghost’ reported that some of the classic maps returning in Modern Warfare 3 will feature doors from the first time.
The ability to bust open or peek through doors was added in MW (2019) and later appeared in last year’s Modern Warfare 2. Although the insider didn’t reveal which arenas have been altered, it appears that previously free-flowing maps will be broken up by closed doors that need to be opened in the game.
While this may seem like a relatively minor change that brings the likes of Favela and High Rise up to modern standards, many players have been left frustrated by the news. After CharlieIntel shared the leak on X, some replied to express their anger.
“Of course they will be different… they always find ways to mess up maps,” said one reply. “Even strike and showdown (which has been remastered on MWII) have things on it that weren’t in the original… they always have to f**k with something.”
Others argued that adding doors to Modern Warfare 2 maps would “ruin the classic flow” that fans have come to love, drastically changing how they play in MW3.
Meanwhile, some players singled out specific maps that could be left “slow and boring” if the change turns out to be true.
“Estate gonna be the worst map ever its gonna have 42 doors,” replied one player, before another added: “I can’t wait to count how many doors favela has.”
Of course, this is all based on leaks so far, so be sure to take the news with a pinch of salt for now. We’ll likely have to wait for the Modern Warfare 3 beta to see if the leak is true, and how much it affects the classic maps.
