Warzone Area 99 map

The Call of Duty Next event provided a first look at Black Ops 6 multiplayer as well as a new Warzone map called Area 99.

The future of Warzone following Black Ops 6 will feature a new Resurgence map, changes to Perks and looting, and the return of Verdansk. Here’s what we know about the upcoming Area 99 map that features ties to Nuketown.

What is Warzone Area 99 map?

Area 99 is a new Warzone Resurgence map that’s being called “the birthplace of Nuketown.” The map will take you to a top-secret government location in the 1950s, developed to test nuclear weapons and radiation.

Given the location of the facility, the map is covered in sand and industrial buildings. Inspired by the Nuketown multiplayer map, you’ll notice homages like the Test Site POI with its iconic school bus and Mannequin Assembly where the creepy figures are made.

According to the devs, the map is smaller than Rebirth Island: “Area 99 may be much larger than Nuketown – it is, after all, a Warzone Resurgence Map – but it is still a focused and compact location, with a similar-sized footprint to Rebirth Island.”

When is Area 99 coming to Warzone?

Area 99 is coming to Warzone in Black Ops 6 Season 1. There is currently no date slated for the first live service season, but the devs confirmed that the “all-new Call of Duty: Warzone map coming to Season 1 later this year.”

Is Nuketown in Area 99?

The Nuketown map is not in Area 99, rather the multiplayer map inspired the Warzone map. Instead of a one-to-one replica of the original Nuketown, Area 99 contains bits and pieces of the original map scattered around its POIs.

As you’d expect, Warzone maps are on a much larger scale than multiplayer maps, so the devs decided to deconstruct Nuketown and reimagine it for a much wider area.

Area 99 gameplay

Call of Duty content creators had the chance to play an Alpha version of Area 99 at CoD Next, and you can take a look at some gameplay from Tyler ‘TeeP’ Polchow above.

The gameplay above features plenty of vertical gunfights where TeeP and his teammates are using their height advantage on the map’s numerous roofs to pick off their opponents. TeeP had this to say about the map’s look and feel: “I like the aesthetic, I think I like fighting in a lot of different areas.”

While the launch version of the map will feature vehicles, the Alpha test was devoid of any motorized transport. This should make it easier to travel across the roadways that connect each POI.

Developers

Treyarch developed the new Area 99 map. The lead studio behind Black Ops 6 also led the development of the new Warzone map: “Designed by Treyarch with meticulous attention regarding movement flow, visibility, and narrative direction.”

The fact that Treyarch led the development of the new map should result in a smooth integration with BO6, given that Area 99 will feature the game’s weapons and movement.

To get you up to speed with the planned integration, take a look at all of the QoL changes and find out whether content will carry over from MW3 to Warzone.
