CoD leaker claims Ghost spin-off campaign in development by Modern Warfare 2 devs
Call of Duty leaker Ralph Valve has revealed that a single-player spin-off campaign exploring the backstory of Simon ‘Ghost’ Riley is reportedly in development at Infinity Ward.
The Call of Duty franchise has produced some iconic characters over the years, especially in the Modern Warfare sub-series, from Soap Mactavish to Captain Price.
One of the most beloved among fans is Simon Riley, better known as Ghost. The British special force’s mask has become synonymous with the series, and he played a pivotal role in 2022’s Modern Warfare 2 single-player campaign.
Now, if a well-known CoD leaker is to be believed, work on a new campaign that will dive into Ghost’s origins has begun at Infinity Ward.
In an article for whatifgaming, Ralphs Valve revealed that the team behind the Modern Warfare games are looking to dive into the character’s backstory through a new single-player story.
According to the leaker, Ghost’s voice actor, Samuel Roukin, was approached during the development of Modern Warfare 2 to discuss the possibility. However, there was no confirmation on whether or not Roukin had signed on.
The spin-off will apparently focus on Ghost’s journey before the events of Modern Warfare 2, and shed some light on how he came to wear his signature mask.
This isn’t the first time that a separate Ghost campaign has been mentioned. Prior to Modern Warfare 2‘s launch, Infinity Ward Head Writer, Brian Bloom, told IGN that the team “would like” to tackle the project.
“There’s something about that character that’s iconic, but the mask and some of those more superficial elements, as we’ve attempted to build them out here in our current release, where did some of those things come from?” Bloom said in an interview.
“And exploring that, and looking at that would be something I think the audience would love, and we would love to get into.”
Unfortunately, there were no further details on whether or not the planned Ghost story will arrive as a new title down the line, or as an add-on to Modern Warfare 2.
Infinity Ward’s latest game will reportedly receive premium DLC in 2023, so there’s every chance that we could get a deeper dive into the iconic character sooner than expected.
