Cold War dev explains why Sniper Rifles had to be nerfed so aggressively

Treyarch’s Lead Game Designer has issued a statement on Cold War’s Sniper Rifles, discussing why they needed to add flinching.

Players have been complaining about the lack of sniper flinch for some time now, and Treyarch has announced that Season 3 Reloaded will see it return. A dev has commented on the problem and why it needed to be fixed.

A major risk and reward feature of Sniper Rifles is that you get a huge damage bonus if you manage to score a hit – maybe even a one-shot kill. But this benefit comes at the expense of your aim being compromised if you’re getting hit by an enemy, usually.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War has deviated from the norm and opted to make it so that players will not flinch when being shot, allowing the sniper to aim as normal. This is counterintuitive to what CoD has taught players over the years, so Treyarch has listened, and flinching is being added.

It was recently that players had taken a stance and demanded that Treyarch devs address the overpowered zero flinch on snipers.

It’s now been confirmed in the full list of buffs and nerfs for Cold War Season 3 Reloaded that sniper flinch is back, and Treyarch Lead Game Designer Tony Flame verbalized his thoughts on the matter.

“Gonna be honest: I haven’t touched weapon balancing since launch. But I did help establish the processes our balance team uses. Snipers get better and grow in number over time. There’s a point we must respect the curve trend, or eventually “everyone” Snipes. Sorry, Love you all.”

The honesty is much appreciated as it becomes clear that Tony is working on many aspects of Call of Duty right now, and it’s even better that he’s been able to acknowledge a big gripe in the Cold War community.

With the ZRG 20mm and the Swiss K31 adding to Black Ops Cold War’s arsenal of long-range fear machines, the use of Sniper Rifles has definitely increased in the game.

So it does feel time to ‘respect the curve trend’ and see players play accurate games of cat and mouse with enemy players.

One constant about each new season of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is that as soon as one finishes the next starts soon after.

The current Season 3 Battle Pass is scheduled to end around June 15th or June 16th, and the downtime is usually nothing to worry about.

So we can expect Season 4 to start on June 16th or 17th.

Cold War x Warzone Season 4 teaser

Upon launching Black Ops Cold War or Warzone, the final cutscene for Season 3 plays out. After Adler was rescued from Verdansk, Stitch and his cronies hatch the next stage of their evil plan.

This teaser hints at a new Operator and perhaps a new location for a new multiplayer map. Wraith mentions that their “man in South Africa is standing by.” This could hint that a South African Operator will be coming in Season 4, and there might be a new map set in South Africa along with him.

New Black Ops Cold War Season 4 maps

cod cold war season 4

The new season of content for Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will bring some new maps for players to battle against each other, with one of them being a classic fan favorite from the past.

These new maps are Collateral, Amsterdam, and popular Black Ops II map Hijacked and were officially revealed on June 10.

June 14 saw the reveal that Rush will also be joining the family of Black Ops Cold War maps in Season 4. in what is sure to be another welcomed remaster of a classic favorite for Black Ops II fans.

Given that we’re not too far away from details about Season 4 of Cold War becoming official, it’s only natural that rumors and speculation are starting to become rife.

With the midseason Reloaded content drop behind us and John McClane and Rambo now present, we can look ahead and see that Cold War is possibly gearing up for some classic maps to return.

It seems that Hijacked is being prepared for Season 4 as a big inclusion that will see players scrambling to conquer the massive cruise ship. Also, another as yet unnamed surprise remaster could be joining it as well.

New Mauer der Toten Zombies Map

Also, rumors are abound that there will be a new “DLC round-based Zombies map coming in Season 4” too. A glimpse of this new Zombies map was possibly shown during the gameplay reveal trailer, which you can find below:

Treyarch went on to post on Twitter on June 11, 2021, a tweet that included an image and a caption stating that the prologue for the next round-based Zombies map starts on June 17, so perhaps it will be released in the Reloaded portion of Season 4 a couple of months from the start of the new season.

The June 14 Call of Duty Blog post shone light on this mysterious new Zombies map, as it confirmed that the next round-based Zombies map will be called Mauer der Toten and will be arriving later on in Season 4. You can find the official description of this new Zombies map below:

“Taking place after the events of “Operation Excision” in Outbreak, the Dark Aether story will continue in Treyarch’s next Zombies map, where players will take on new terrors in war-torn East Berlin after a devastating zombie invasion has overtaken the city.

The Zombies team is chomping at the bit to share more about this new experience soon, but for now, expect “Mauer der Toten” to offer plenty of new twists, turns, and terrifying undead threats for players to conquer.”

The June 14 Call of Duty Blog Post also confirmed that a new Outbreak region called Zoo will be added in Season 4, which will feature a Main Quest that will lead directly into the story of Mauer der Toten.

Black Ops Cold War Season 4 weapons

Carrying on the usual groove of Season 1 and Season 2, Treyarch’s most recent inventory boost added a few new guns and some extras such as the Baseball Bat and the Ballistic Knife.

At the moment we don’t know too much about what Season 4 is set to include, but it is a curious question given how balanced the meta is right now. Thanks to all the buffs and nerfs delivered by Season 3 Reloaded, you wonder what new weapons will be introduced. We will update this page once we know more.

The Season 4 gameplay trailer released on June 10, 2021, teased the arrival of various weapons for Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War that includes the G3 Assault Rifle, Nail Gun, and Desert Eagle Pistol.

June 14, 2021, saw Activision confirm that the new weapons that players will be able to get in Black Ops Cold War Season 4 will be the MG 82 LMG, C58 Assault Rifle, Nail Gun SMG, OTs 9 SMG, and Mace.

Also, check out our ranking of every gun in Black Ops Cold War.

New Black Ops Cold War Hand Cannon Scorestreak

Season 4 of Black Ops Cold War will also see the introduction of a new Hand Cannon Scorestreak to the first-person shooter. You can find the official description for this new Scorestreak below:

“Desperate times call for “Desperate Measures,” and those who completed that mission in Black Ops Cold War’s Campaign know the power of the Hand Cannon.

A semiautomatic handgun chambered in a ridiculously high-caliber round, the Hand Cannon delivers lethal damage to anywhere on the body, as the sheer kinetic impact incapacitates any Operator at a minimum, or blows them to smithereens with a well-placed shot.

The Hand Cannon can also deal significant damage to enemy vehicle Scorestreaks, especially those on the ground, but with only eight rounds in its chamber, it may be worth using them all on infantry forces.”

Black Ops Cold War Season 4 game modes

cod cold war sticks and stones

If there’s one thing that players cannot complain in Cold War about it’s the smorgasbord of game modes to plow through. As well as new game modes and limited-time-only playlists, existing ones are even being expanded too.

Outbreak players can now fish for instance – a sentence that most gamers would’ve had thought needed to be said. But again, with the recency of the Reloaded update, Treyarch is keeping tight-lipped about any big potential game modes for Season 4 of Cold War.

A June 14 post on the Call of Duty Blog officially revealed what new game modes players will be able to enjoy in Season 4 of Black Ops Cold War. These new game modes will be Capture The Flag, One in the Chamber, and Multi-Team: Sat-Link.

Once more information starts to filter through we’ll be updating this page to keep you up-to-date about Black Ops Cold War Season 4.
