AN ALL-NEW SEASON OF CONTENT

Season Three launches with a brand-new Battle Pass packed with 100 Tiers of new content, including the badass new Perseus Operator “Wraith” unlocked at Tier 0, two free Battle Pass weapons, new Weapon Blueprints, Operator Skins, Vehicle Skins, and much more to unlock throughout the season.

We’re bringing six additional weapons to Black Ops Cold War throughout the season, including the PPSh-41 SMG, Swiss K31 sniper rifle, and everyone’s favorite Ballistic Knife at launch, with the CARV.2 tactical rifle, AMP63 machine pistol, and Baseball Bat melee weapon to follow later in the season. We’re excited to bring one of the series’ all-time favorite SMGs to Black Ops Cold War with the PPSh-41, and we can’t wait for snipers to add another rifle to their arsenal just two weeks after the release of the ZRG 20mm.

In addition to the Battle Pass content and all the new weapons coming to the game, Season Three also delivers four new Prestige Levels (12-15), two new sets of Season Challenges to MP and Zombies, and new legacy Prestige Icons and the Prestige Master Calling Card from the original Black Ops to the Prestige Shop. If you’ve been saving up your Prestige Keys since Season One, hit up the Prestige Shop at the start of the season and add some new favorites to your collection.

MULTIPLAYER

We’re bringing four maps to Multiplayer throughout Season Three, including three 6v6 maps, starting with the new Yamantau and Diesel at launch, and the iconic Standofffollowing in-season. The massive new Duga map will also come to Multi-Team later in the season after debuting exclusively in Outbreak for Zombies players at the start of the season.

From the frozen mountaintops of the U.S.S.R in Yamantau to the scorched New Mexico desert of Diesel, the action never stops in these fast-paced, small-sized maps. For Face Off and Gunfight fans, Diesel also joins the rotation for 3v3 and 2v2 modes. And if you played Black Ops II,you’ve probably been just as eager to jump into Standoff in Black Ops Cold War as we are. Keep an eye out for the return of the king later in the season.

Of course, the addition of the Ballistic Knife means the classic Stick and Stones party mode from the original Black Ops is also making its comeback! This is one of our favorite MP modes in Call of Duty history, and we’re excited to jump in with everyone in the community this week. Brush up on your crossbow shots and Tomahawk throws, and we’ll see you in the dedicated Sticks and Stones playlist. Note: Prop Hunt is making way for Sticks and Stones in the Featured Playlist lineup this week, and will return later in Season Three with the new Yamantau and Diesel maps added to the Prop Hunt rotation.

The new Strafe Run Scorestreak also comes to MP this week, providing sweeping ground cover and anti-aircraft fire from a pair of jet fighters to the tune of 5,000 score. Try this one out in objective-based modes where you need to hold down an area long enough for your team to capture a zone or shut out the enemy in a particular lane.

In the vehicle department, the all-new Cargo Truck makes its debut in Multi-Team modes this season, also appearing in Outbreak for Zombies players. Pick up the entire squad in this behemoth and plow through enemy teams while your passengers provide covering fire from the mounted turret and open rear flatbed.

For the competitive community, we’ve added Combat Record tracking support for League Play and restricted Thermal Optic attachments in all CDL modes. We’ve also made updates to movement, the Apocalypse and Checkmate maps, several MP modes, and Split-Screen, as well as additional UI and audio bug fixes. Check out the full list of patch notes below for all the details on what’s new in MP.

ZOMBIES

In Zombies, the action hits a fever pitch as Season Three sets the stage for the events to come in the Dark Aether story. Requiem expands their operations to Duga, a huge new Outbreak region packed with new story Intel, expanded Objective locations and new infil points, the addition of the weapon-mounted Cargo Truck and FAV vehicles, and much more. Keep an eye out for new secrets to discover throughout the Outbreak Zone, including Phase Wall Tears, D.I.E. Machine Wonder Weapon upgrades, a new way to access higher difficulty regions even faster, and the new Fury Crystal event as you carve a path through the Ural Mountains.

Verticality comes to Zombies in a big way in Duga, as players can ascend a massive Soviet radar array tower while fighting off the horde, and choose to either parachute or zipline to safety as a last-minute means of escape. This is our most versatile Outbreak region yet, offering new ways to outmaneuver the undead with plenty of nooks and crannies to explore.

The Dark Aether story will continue to unfold through the new in-game intel discoverable in Outbreak in Season Three, setting up the events leading to the Main Quest coming to Outbreak later in the season. Without spoiling anything, we’ll just say the secrets uncovered in Outbreak will tie directly into the narrative for our next round-based Zombies map – which is currently in the works! – as well as future seasons of Zombies content.

All Zombies players can get their hands on the brand-new Toxic Growth Field Upgrade in round-based maps and in Outbreak at Season Three’s launch, which summons a patch of wild growth to slow and deal toxic damage to enemies. Equip this Toxic Growth to shut down lanes, defend objectives, and buy your teammates precious seconds to escape the clutches of death. Like all Field Upgrades, Toxic Growth can be upgraded all the way to Skill Tier V to deal even more damage, persist longer, and even cause enemy corpses to explode!

We’ve also made some changes to three Ammo Mods with this update to shake up the meta and encourage more variety in gameplay. Most notably, Napalm Burst’s damage effects have now been doubled, and Dead Wire now receives a 25% damage bonus to stunned zombies (down from 33%) in a reduced radius. Shatter Blast’s explosive damage has also been reduced to bring its effectiveness in-line with the rest of the Ammo Mod options. Jump into Zombies, hit up the Pack-a-Punch Machine, and see what you think of the new adjustments.

Dead Ops Arcade 3 receives new improvements this week, including an adjustment to XP gains and updates to the Mamaback boss fight. And on PlayStation, Onslaught players can test their skills against the undead on the new Yamantau map, with more new content coming in-season. We’re happy to see such a positive reception from Zombies players over the recent gameplay improvements and content additions to Onslaught, and we plan to keep adding to the mode in the future. The new Containment mode will remain in rotation at the start of Season Three, as well!

In addition to a fix to unlock two Intel items from Trials in Outbreak, we’ve also implemented new bug fixes for Challenges, stability improvements for Outbreak, and more improvements across the board.

With the launch of Season Three, players will be happy to know we’ve increased XP and Match Bonus XP gains in all Zombies modes across the board, and Zombies players also receive a new set of 20 Season Challenges to unlock and complete for exclusive Calling Card and XP rewards. Reach Level 190 before the season is over to unlock all 20!

WEAPON UNLOCK CHALLENGES IN ZOMBIES

Also starting with Season Three, players will be able to complete weapon unlock challenges in both Multiplayer andZombies, including existing and future weapon challenges. Bring in the new PPSh-41 and Swiss K31 from the Battle Pass into your Zombies loadouts, and unlock new and existing weapons like the R1 Shadowhunter and Ballistic Knife by completing challenges entirely within Zombies!

The current list of ranged weapon unlocks available in Zombies this week includes the Groza, MAC-10, Streetsweeper, FARA 83, LC10, R1 Shadowhunter, and ZRG 20mm, as well as the Sledgehammer, Wakizashi, Machete, E-Tool, and Ballistic Knife melee weapons. Look for future weapon unlock challenges to include requirements that can be completed in both MP and Zombies.

NEW WEAPON TUNING

Season Three also brings a new round of weapon tuning to Black Ops Cold War. This tuning pass brings adjustments across the board to the Light Machine Gun class, tightening up some of the areas where LMGs were particularly versatile compared to other classes. The Shotgun class also gets some changes, including tweaks to the Streetsweeper to remove its 1-hit kill potential and rein in its damage values.

We’ve also made some tuning changes in the Assault Rifle, Submachine Gun, and Tactical Rifle departments, including attachment updates for the FFAR 1, sprint speed updates for SMGs, and more. See below for the full list of tuning details.

“HUNT FOR ADLER” EVENT

Later on April 22nd, players can jump into the “Hunt for Adler” event in Black Ops Cold War and Warzone to complete challenges in both games to discover clues surrounding Adler’s whereabouts. Complete a full set of challenges in either game and unlock an exclusive Adler Operator Skin and new cosmetic rewards!

Speaking of Warzone, Verdansk is about to heat up in a big way in Season Three… be sure to jump into Warzone starting at 12PM PT / 3PM ET April 21st to witness it all, and follow @CallofDuty and @RavenSoftware on Twitter for all the latest updates.

Black Ops Cold War Napalm Scorestreak broken again in Season 3

After it was seemingly fixed, the Napalm Scorestreak in Black Ops Cold War Season 3 appears to have become broken in a new way.

The Napalm Strike Scorestreak is under fire once again as it seems to have developed a new prolonged aftereffect that is catching Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War players by surprise.

It’s very rare you’ll go one game of Black Ops Cold War without seeing the Napalm Scorestreak. It’s popular, easily achievable, and is used by many as a result.

The launch of Season 3 proved to be quite impactful with the ever-impressive Diesel and Yamantau maps and the addition of the PPSH-41 and Swiss K31. But it also broke the Napalm Scorestreak causing it to miss its mark, making it unusable.

Players haven’t reported any issues with it recently, that was until the latest example showing that the napalm is lasting longer than it actually should.

A beautiful benefit to the Scorestreak is that not only can it engulf enemies in fire and kill them instantly, but it can also be used to strategically trap the enemy team.

It leaves a deadly trail of fire that swallows the surrounding area, and if it so much as touches a hair on the enemy, then they perish instantly.

But the flames are supposed to have a set length of time before they are no longer an issue, and are unable to cause harm.

Unfortunately, instead of the flames extinguishing at their normal rate, they seem to be lasting longer than usual – as JimJamSandwich proved.

Whether it’s an issue with Season 3 we’re not sure, but in the video, the flames have clearly gone out, and the player should’ve been able to go on their merry way. Usually, even if there’s a bit of fire left, as long as it’s a small amount, you can usually run through it anyway.

But the Napalm Scorestreak seems to be having the opposite effect on CoD gamers. Again, like the last problem with its inaccurate firing, we’re sure the longevity of the napalm will be adjusted accordingly.

Clever trick makes completing Cold War camos with RPG simple

One of Black Ops Cold War’s notoriously difficulty camo challenges has been made simpler thanks to a clever trick in CoD.

Published

on

cod cold war rpg

The Science camo challenge has caused problems for Black Ops Cold War players desperate to earn the game’s best camos. But one player has made a discovery that should make the RPG challenge much easier in CoD.

Once you make the decision to try and get Diamond or Dark Matter camo, you’re basically committed to seeing it through. The only problem is that many arduous challenges lie in your path making it a difficult endeavor.

Since the game’s launch, players have complained about the game’s infamous “behind cover” challenge but there’s also been the odd helpful method along the way. There was the clever Dark Mater gun skip exploit and also one for Diamond camo as well that unlocked Diamond camo immediately.

This RPG fix isn’t quite as dramatic, but it makes one of the game’s most frustrating challenges a lot simpler, allowing players to use the Cigma for a large part of it instead.

cod cold war rpg 7

When it comes to launchers, the Cigma is head and shoulders above the rest due to its ease of use and lock-on capabilities.

This led to one curious player testing out the possibilities when it comes to the Launcher Science camo challenge that requires players to get “3 Scorestreak or Vehicle kills in a single game 10 times.”

The Cigma is born and bred for this kind of task, but the manual aiming of the RPG is almost impossible. However, months after the game’s release, Matthew106 has learned of an easy way to complete the RPG challenge.

“I don’t know why this works, but I was able to switch from hoping for tanks and people AFK on jetskis and motorcycles to playing normally on Nuketown and shooting the first care package or sentry gun that came my way.

“I can only assume that the game checks to see how many scorestreak destruction medals you have when you destroy a new scorestreak and checks to see if the number of medals is three or more, meaning it doesn’t care how the first two streaks were destroyed, it just only does the check when the RPG destroys one.”

So to clarify, Black Ops Cold War seems to let you destroy the first two vehicles using a Cigma and then allow you to destroy the third Scorestreak or Vehicle with an RPG.

This eradicates much of the pain players need to go through to take down the first two objects with RPGs. So if you’re still struggling to achieve Dark Matter and this challenge put you off, now you have a solution.

Best controller settings for Black Ops Cold War Season 3

To improve your accuracy and movement in Black Ops Cold War, here are the best controller settings for Season 3.

Published

on

BOCW controllers

Making sure your controller settings are perfect is an important part of any first-person shooter, so we’ve put together the best aim assist, aim response curve type, target aim assist settings, and more for Black Ops Cold War Season 3.

Black Ops Cold War allows players to fully customize their controller settings, even fine-tuning their aim assist settings to shoot as accurately as possible. With so many settings available, it’s hard to pick out the settings you should be running.

With new maps like Yamantau and Diesel launching with the major seasonal updates, and Standoff coming with Black Ops Cold War Season 3 Reloaded, making sure you hit your shots will be vital with new sight-lines and buildings to master.

With that in mind, here are all the best controller settings for Black Ops Cold War Season 3. You can use the links below to navigate to each section.

Best Black Ops Cold War controller settings

Controller

  • Horizontal Stick Sensitivity: 6
  • Vertical Stick Sensitivity: 6
  • ADS Stick Sensitivity (Low Zoom): 1.00
  • ADS Stick Sensitivity (High Zoom): 1.00
  • Button Layout: Default
  • Flip LT/RT with LB/LB: If you play with claw grip or want faster button press time, you should use Flipped
  • Aim Response Curve Type: Standard
  • Invert Vertical Look: Disabled
  • Controller Vibration: Disabled

Sensitivity is all dependent on you, but 6 is one of the most common values. You should hop into a Custom Game, which we’ll explain further down, to find the best value for you.

Gameplay

  • Target Aim Assist: Enabled
  • Target Aim Assist Mode: Standard
  • ADS Aim Assist: Enabled (Campaign and Zombies only)
  • Airborne Mantle Behaviour: Manual
  • Grounded Mantle Behavior: On Second Press
  • Aim Down Sights Behavior: Hold
  • Steady Aim Behavior: Hold
  • Armor Behavior: Apply All
  • Attack Vehicle Control Mode: Aim-Based

Mantle Behavior is an important setting to adjust. While trying to jump shot while next to cover, your Operator will mantle onto the surface, rendering you defenseless mid-fight. If you set it to only Mantle on Second Press, you’ll be able to freely jump-shot, and then double-tap jump when you want to mantle.

For more details on Aim Response Curve and Target Aim Assist Mode, we’re going into detail with these settings further in this guide.

Advanced

  • Stick Layout: Default
  • Left Stick Min Input Threshold: 0 (then increase as required)
  • Right Stick Min Input Threshold: 100
  • Right Stick Min Input Threshold: 0 (then increase as required)
  • Right Stick Max Input Threshold: 100
  • Auto Move Forward: Disabled
  • Auto Sprint: Enabled
  • Sprint Cancels Reload: Disabled
  • Parachute Auto Deploy: Enabled
  • Equipment Behavior: Hold
  • Interact/Reload Behavior: Tap to Reload

Having Auto Sprint Enabled will allow you to move around the map quicker, but you’ll need to get used to only slightly moving your stick when being stealthy.

The Stick Input Thresholds, or deadzone, are all dependent on your controller. You want the minimum value to be as low as possible without your controller having stick drift.

Best Black Ops Cold War Aim Response Curve Type

In this guide, we’ll be going over all the aim assist settings so that you can find the one that works best for you in Treyarch’s Black Ops Cold War.

Cold War aim response curve

There’s 3 different settings for Aim Response Curve, so let’s find you the best one:

  • Standard: Standard curve from aim stick to aim rate. When you initially aim, there will be a slight delay in speed when the stick is pressed all the way in a specific direction.
  • Linear: Removes initial speed delay when the stick is pressed all the way in a direction. More for aggressive, fast movements at the cost of precision.
  • Dynamic: Hybrid system between linear and standard. Has a middle ground aim speed up when initially moving the stick.

The majority of players will be used to the Standard Aim Response Curve, as this is has been the default setting in most Call of Duty games.

If you feel like you have solid stick control and can snap on targets with ease, it’s worth trying out Dynamic. It’s a good middle ground between Standard and Linear (which we wouldn’t recommend), and some pro players such as Scump have used it with great success.

Best Black Ops Cold War Target Aim Assist Mode

Target aim assist is used in gunfights or when aiming at an enemy player. It slows down your crosshair when hovering over enemy players.

Cold War target aim assist mode

There’s 4 different settings this time, so we’ll dig through each one:

  • Standard: Traditional aim slowdown near the target. A wider area where your aim will slow around an opponent. Best for regular Call of Duty players who want some extra time to lock on the target.
  • Legacy: Alternate aim slowdown near the target (a more narrow range). Same type as in Warzone. If you’re a regular Warzone player, you should try this.
  • Precision: Strong aim assist slowdown that only kicks in when close to an enemy player. Only use this option if you’re a skilled and accurate player. The slowdown area is minimal and casual players will not like this.
  • Focusing: Strong aim slowdown that kicks in when narrowly missing targets. If you’re new to Call of Duty, this is your best bet to improving on a controller.

If you primarily play Black Ops Cold War and Warzone isn’t your cup of tea, we recommend sticking to the Standard Target Aim Assist setting. This is what the majority of CoD players are used to, and will feel the most natural to most.

However, if you like to switch between Warzone, Modern Warfare, and Black Ops Cold War, it’s worth getting used to the Legacy aim assist setting. With these games on different engines, it can be quite jarring to switch between them, but the Legacy mode will make the transition much smoother.

Best Aim Assist for sniping in Cold War

Unlike many previous Treyarch Call of Duty games, Sniper Rifles in Black Ops Cold War have Aim Assist. When dragging your crosshairs past an enemy, you’ll be able to feel your aim slow down in a ‘bubble’ around the target.

This has advantages and disadvantages, so we’ve got the best Aim Assist settings for sniping in Cold War.

Pelington BOCW

For Aim Response Curve, we’d recommend leaving it on what you’re used to. Standard and Dynamic both have their separate place but when sniping, it’s best to leave it on the one that you prefer.

However, for Target Aim Assist Mode, we’d recommend Precision. With the Aim Assist bubble around targets, it can feel like your aim is getting stuck, or it will pull away from the target you’re actually aiming at. Precision significantly shrinks the bubble around opponents, allowing you to be much more accurate and precise when sniping.

Some players prefer to turn off Aim Assist when sniping, as the bubble that catches players can throw your aim off. We’ll explain how to disable that further in the article.

How to turn off Aim Assist in Cold War

When Black Ops Cold War first launched, there was a little bit of confusion about Aim Assist. The ADS Aim Assist setting only works for campaign and Zombies, but the in-game description wasn’t specific for the first few weeks of launch.

Cold War Outbreak mode

If you don’t like the snappy aim-lock when fighting Zombies, or would rather have no multiplayer Aim Assist for classic sniping, here’s how to turn off Aim Assist in Cold War.

To have no aim assist when playing campaign and Zombies:

  • Set ADS Aim Sensitivity to Disabled.

To have no aim assist when playing multiplayer:

  • Set Target Aim Assist to Disabled.

You won’t be nearly as accurate when using automatic weapons, but having no Aim Assist will allow you to have a much more classic sniping experience.

Does FOV affect Aim Assist?

Unlike Modern Warfare and Warzone, Black Ops Cold War has a field of view slider on console. You’ll be able to increase how much you can see in front of you, taking in much more information than the default setting.

BOCW FOV slider

Cold War’s FOV slider goes all the way from 60-120, giving players a lot of choice in finding the perfect FOV for their playstyle and hardware.

Cranking the FOV up to 120 will allow you to see an insane amount of what’s in front of you, but on the other hand, far off player models will be much smaller and more difficult to see, never mind the hit to the game’s performance.

Having an FOV of 120 can severely throw off your aim, as you need to fine-tune your shots on these small targets, as well as compensate for the Aim Assist bubble around them.

To stay accurate on controller, we wouldn’t recommend putting your FOV above 105.

How to find the best Cold War controller settings

With controller settings, there’s no setup that will work perfectly for everyone. It’s tempting to find your favorite pro player or content creator and copy their settings, but they might not be the best for you.

Cold War custom game settings

What we’d recommend is jumping into a custom game of Black Ops Cold War and test out some different controller settings. To maximize your time while testing out the settings, here’s what we’d recommend:

  • Map: Nuketown ’84
  • Mode: Free for All
  • Rules:
    • Time limit: Unlimited
    • Score limit: Unlimited
  • Bots and players:
    • Number of bots: 6
    • Bot difficulty: Recruit

With these custom game settings, you’ll be able to practice shooting for as long as you like. Nuketown ’84 is small enough that you’ll be able to constantly fight, and the Recruit level bots will hardly shoot back at you.

Practice shooting bots at both long and close range with a variety of different settings and weapons, and keep on the setting you feel most accurate and comfortable with. Even if you’re a Call of Duty veteran, there’s always room to improve, so it’s worth trying out some different combinations.

While you’re in this private mode, you should also try getting your Minimum Input Thresholds as low as they’ll go. Start at 0, and move it up one until you no longer receive stick drift.

Try out these controller settings in Black Ops Cold War Season 3, and you’ll be shooting deadly accurate in no time.
