One of the most anticipated pieces of news from today’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 esports season reveal stream was the player count per team in competitive play for the Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Season.

Heading into the reveal on September 19, many expected the competitive format to switch to more players, with host and former pro player, Merk, even making a joke that it had been a badly kept secret.

Developers Treyarch made a big change to public matches in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 by changing the amount of players from 6v6 to 5v5 as the new standard. This resulted in speculation by many esports players about whether the competitive format would shift from 4v4 to match the 5v5 or remain at 4v4.

During the esports reveal stream, Treyarch confirmed the switch to 5 v 5 for competitive Call of Duty for Black Ops 4.

Dan Bunting of Treyarch explained that they believed making the competitive experience as close to the casual one would increase the amount of interest in esports.

David Vonderhaar followed up by saying he thought the change would make esports more tactical and would help strike a balance.

The first competitive event of the year will take place between December 5-7 in Las Vegas.
