What is the Q Lite? New PlayStation handheld leaked
It seems Sony is creating a new handheld PlayStation device codenamed the Q Lite and new leaks have revealed the device’s development timeline and major details.
When they’re not busy attempting to block Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision, Sony are constantly developing new technology and accessories like their VR headset or PS5 DualSense Edge controller.
Recently Sony also developed a PlayStation-themed mobile gaming controller called the Backbone. However, their foray into handheld gaming is far from over as new leaks revealed that a new handheld PlayStation device is in the works at Sony.
Here’s what you need to know about the development of Sony’s Q Lite.
Sony PlayStation Q Lite handheld explained
According to Insider Gaming, Sony are currently hard at work developing the next iteration of their handheld hardware.
The handheld Sony device that appears to be in development is currently codenamed the Q Lite. It seems the Q Lite will not be a standalone console, but an addition to the PlayStation 5.
Insider Gaming suggested that the Q Lite will require a PS5 to function. In other words, it doesn’t seem to be a cloud-streaming handheld device. It could instead utilize Sony’s Remote Play to sync up with the PlayStation 5.
Remote Play is a feature that allows players to enjoy their PlayStation 5 library of games on other devices in close proximity. It is being reported that the Q Lite will require an internet connection to function and sync up with the PS5 to support 1080p and 60 FPS streaming.
As for what the Q Lite could look like, Insider Gaming provided the following details: “Early prototypes show the console will look a lot like a PlayStation 5 controller, but with a massive 8-inch LCD touchscreen in the center.”
Q Lite Sony Handheld development timeline
The report from Insider Gaming suggests that it’s still early days for the Q Lite, as the handheld device remains in its QA phase. Sony fans can expect the Q Lite to “release before the PlayStation 5 Pro and after the Detachable Disc Drive PS5.”
They also clarify that the PlayStation 5 Pro is eyeing a holiday 2024 release, which means the Q Lite could arrive before then if rumors turn out to be true.
Keep an eye out for Sony’s next major presentation highlighting the company’s future releases as more details are expected to arrive soon.
