Bungie confirms Destiny 2 Witch Queen expansion delayed until 2022
Bungie has unfortunately confirmed that the Witch Queen expansion, the successor to Beyond Light, will not be released until 2022 at the earliest.
2020’s Beyond Light expansion served to serve as a soft reboot for Destiny with a big change in its narrative and how players could enjoy the gameplay – such as stasis. Beyond Light is the first in a new arc of expansions that was supposed to culminate in the Lightfall.
However, in an Official Bungie blog post, they’ve had to outline their intentions for the Witch Queen expansion and update Destiny 2 players on its development and whereabouts.
The future is looking rosy for Destiny 2 as players have been able to bask in the Season of the Hunt and the Season of the Chosen since the launch of Beyond Light.
Already announced for 2021 is the return of the legendary Vault of Glass Raid in Destiny Season 14, along with the ability to Transmog, and crossplay will feature at some point.
The good news curtails there slightly as Bungie broke the news that Witch Queen would not be able to meet its deadline. Unforeseen circumstances in the world have caused unavoidable delays and forced the developer’s hand.
Bungie has said, “Last summer, we outlined our ambition for the next era in Destiny 2 by announcing the full arc, starting with Beyond Light, followed by the Witch Queen and Lightfall. As we began to scale production on the Witch Queen last year, we made the difficult but important decision to move its release to early 2022; we also realized we needed to add an additional unannounced chapter after Lightfall to fully complete our first saga of Destiny.”
Players will naturally be disappointed but understanding in Bungie’s decision. However, they can sleep knowing that a quality expansion pack is on the way, with confirmation of a fourth one to come after Lightfall.
The blog goes on to say that they value three key principles in Witch Queen’s development, and that is basically: not rushing the content, making sure they perfect new features like crossplay, and most importantly the welfare of their employees.
In the meantime, players can still enjoy all that Season of the Chosen has to offer as they await concrete details on Destiny 2 Season 14.
