Destiny 2 players disappointed long-awaited 15th wish realization was a “cheap cutscene”
BungieDestiny 2 players have expressed disappointment with the 15th wish reveal cutscene, and have said they are not looking forward to The Final Shape expansion as a result.
Destiny 2’s latest expansion, Lightfall, reveals more details about The Witness, a ‘big bad’ that has been teased over the past year from The Witch Queen and Beyond Light.
While Destiny 2 is not all about the story, it plays an important role in explaining why players find themselves on different planets and fighting new enemies. It also gives context to why you are completing activities like Raids, adding enjoyment to the game and these tough challenges.
With the release of Lightfall, however, players have been finding the story a little less than satisfactory. One of the most pivotal moments in the story, and one that players have been waiting to see for years, is the Guardians’ entry into the Traveller. Despite this pivotal and exciting moment finally happening, though, players have said the performance and reveal itself felt “cheap.”
Redditor ‘crusaderprophet’ vented about the subject in a post. “Where is the life and drama in the cut scene? What is going on with storytelling? I am so fed up with all the cheap closures of the story threads,” they said. “Feels like a cop-out just to provide answers. Execution of some of the most important story threads and dramatic beats is at its lowest. Nothing they have done since Lightfall has redeemed Lightfall’s storytelling.”
Most fans agreed with this sentiment, saying that Lightfall has actually felt more like filler content than the big expansion Bungie promised it would be. “I am fully convinced of the conspiracy theory that they created an extra year and Lightfall out of nothing. It just makes sense,” a player commented.
The challenge with creating a story that is told over several years is keeping it fresh and being consistent with the storytelling. While Destiny 2 has succeeded so far, players are finding that they are dropping the ball on lore as of late.
“Right before Lightfall dropped, I was ride or die Destiny. Nowadays I can’t even be bothered to play. Lightfall was Destiny’s Infinity War, and it flopped spectacularly,” a fan commented.
The Final Shape is set to release in June 2024, and we will be sure to update you on all the changes that come with it. While fans are hesitant to believe it will be better than Lightfall, they are hoping to see more classic Destiny 2 storytelling and gameplay come with it.
